The President's Sweetheart Secretary - Chapter 27 - I Didn't Mean to Embarrass Myself
Friday arrived in the blink of an eye. Just before the end of the workday, Lin Haimian was summoned by the president once again. She hurried into the office, looking at Liang Tongheng with a puzzled expression. “President, what are your instructions?”
Liang Tongheng looked directly at Lin Haimian. “Wait for me after work.”
“Huh? Why should I wait for you?” Lin Haimian was taken aback by Liang Tongheng’s suggestion.
Liang Tongheng gritted his teeth, frustrated by his secretary’s lack of intelligence. “We’re going to the birthday party together.”
Lin Haimian’s face changed slightly. “What? Chairman Wang only invited you, President. It wouldn’t be appropriate for me to go along, haha.”
Liang Tongheng remained unmoved. “I need an assistant.”
Lin Haimian really didn’t want to go, so she continued to look for excuses. She glanced down at her outfit and then at Liang Tongheng’s attire, speaking weakly, “I don’t have a dress. I’m afraid I’ll embarrass you and the company.”
“I’ll arrange that,” Liang Tongheng said, amused by Lin Haimian’s obvious discomfort.
Lin Haimian racked her brain for more reasons, but before she could speak, Liang Tongheng cut her off with a single sentence. “What? Is it embarrassing to attend with me?”
Lin Haimian immediately denied it. “Of course not.”
“Then it’s settled. You can go now.” Liang Tongheng finalized the matter and dismissed her.
Lin Haimian retreated with a stiff smile, returning to her desk. After some thought, she took out her phone and sent a message. When she received a reply, she finally smiled.
When the end-of-day bell rang, Lin Haimian practically jumped up, resigned to her fate. She obediently waited for Liang Tongheng to take her to try on dresses and get her hair done.
Looking at her unfamiliar yet familiar reflection in the mirror, Lin Haimian’s heart skipped a beat. She had forgotten how long it had been since she last dressed up like this.
“Are you ready?” Liang Tongheng, who hadn’t changed his expression the entire time, was getting impatient and interrupted Lin Haimian’s thoughts.
Lin Haimian awkwardly walked out, unsure of what to do with her hands and feet. “I’m ready.”
When Lin Haimian appeared before Liang Tongheng, his eyes lit up, though he quickly concealed it.
The purple evening dress highlighted her fair skin, perfectly showcasing her petite, rounded shoulders and impressive bust. Her long hair was styled into a small bun, with a few strands left to drape over her chest.
Her delicate face, usually adorned with minimal makeup, now featured a full look. Her eyebrows were elegantly shaped, and her already large eyes were accentuated with eyeshadow and eyeliner, making them even more captivating. Her lips were painted a perfect shade of pink, tempting anyone to take a bite.
Liang Tongheng glanced at Lin Haimian and, still cool and composed, said, “Let’s go.”
Lin Haimian felt a bit disappointed that the president didn’t show any sign of being impressed or appreciative.
They sat in the back seat of the car, both silent. The quieter it was, the more uncomfortable Lin Haimian felt, wishing she could jump up and down.
Suddenly, Liang Tongheng spoke. “Tell me your thoughts on Chairman Wang.”
Lin Haimian relaxed a bit, finding it easier to talk about something familiar. “Chairman Wang is upright, decisive, and has exceptional judgment. Under his leadership, the company has grown rapidly, despite offending many shareholders. Fortunately, he holds the most shares, making him unshakable as the chairman.”
Liang Tongheng’s eyes showed a hint of appreciation. “You seem to know him well.”
Lin Haimian stiffened, laughing awkwardly. “Since I’m attending, I thought it best to know a bit about him to avoid any embarrassment.”
“If you embarrass yourself, I’ll dock your pay.”
Lin Haimian was speechless.
The car fell silent again. After a long internal struggle, Lin Haimian finally asked, “Are you sure it’s okay for me to attend the birthday party with you?”
Liang Tongheng, exasperated, shot her a glare that made her shut up. He then closed his eyes to rest, leaving Lin Haimian feeling even more anxious about her role as his secretary.
The car stopped in front of a villa. The lively atmosphere in the yard softened the cold, imposing iron gates, adding a touch of warmth.
Lin Haimian’s heart raced with nerves. She glanced around, her anxious demeanor earning her another glare from the president. “Don’t be nervous. Just get some food, but don’t leave my sight.”
Lin Haimian finally understood her role-she was there to eat! “Got it. I’ll make sure to eat a lot.”
Liang Tongheng was speechless.
Lin Haimian’s petite figure walking beside the handsome Liang Tongheng made them look like a perfect couple, drawing the attention of many onlookers.
Lin Haimian tried to walk more gracefully to match the president’s appearance.
Their entrance to the venue drew numerous curious, admiring, and speculative glances, focusing all attention on them.
“Go ahead,” Liang Tongheng said as people began to recognize him and approach to greet him.
“Okay,” Lin Haimian replied, happily walking away. If it weren’t for the high heels, she would have run to the food.
Lin Haimian carefully selected some food, watching Liang Tongheng being surrounded by people. She couldn’t help but think how tough it was for people with status and power. They had to engage in small talk instead of enjoying the delicious food.
Her relaxed mood vanished when she saw President He, who was about the same age as Liang Tongheng. Startled, she dropped her spoon into her plate with a loud clatter.
Everyone around her stopped talking and turned to look at her. The handsome men who had been about to approach her were also startled and stopped in their tracks.
Lin Haimian’s face turned red. She didn’t dare look up. “S-sorry.”
In just a few seconds, everyone resumed their conversations. Lin Haimian looked at Liang Tongheng, not realizing he was also looking at her, probably wanting to strangle her for causing a scene.
However, besides Liang Tongheng, President He also noticed her. Lin Haimian’s face changed, and she awkwardly turned her head away, forgetting Liang Tongheng’s instructions. She picked up her plate and tried to move further away to avoid embarrassing him again.
“President Liang, long time no see.” As soon as Lin Haimian was allowed to move, He Yaowen spotted Liang Tongheng and approached with a smile, holding a wine glass.
Liang Tongheng forced a smile, taking a glass of red wine and raising it towards He Yaowen. “Not at all. We just met two days ago.”
He Yaowen, now free from his usual businesslike demeanor, had a slightly playful smile.
He Yaowen raised his glass as well. Before he could speak, they heard a clatter not too far away. He noticed that Liang Tongheng’s smile froze for a moment after glancing in that direction.
Liang Tongheng regretted bringing Lin Haimian. She was truly a handful. Seeing her frightened expression, he wanted to go over, but He Yaowen stopped him.
“Does President Liang know that clumsy young lady?” He Yaowen asked, looking at Lin Haimian with interest. She was quite pretty.
Liang Tongheng forced a smile. “I’m sorry for the embarrassment. That’s my secretary. Excuse me for a moment.”
Liang Tongheng nodded and turned around, but Lin Haimian was nowhere to be seen. He was angry but maintained a polite smile as he walked towards where she had been.
He Yaowen watched Liang Tongheng’s anxious back with a deepening smile.
Liang Tongheng greeted people while discreetly searching for Lin Haimian. He had almost completed a full circle without finding her.
Frowning, he moved away from the lively area, heading towards a quieter spot. Sure enough, he soon spotted Lin Haimian.
However, she wasn’t alone. She was chatting and laughing with a girl in a red dress. From a distance, he couldn’t see the girl’s face clearly.
Lin Haimian was engrossed in conversation. When she saw Liang Tongheng approaching, she panicked, pushing the girl away. “Go quickly, someone’s coming. Remember what I said.”
The girl didn’t look back, but seeing Lin Haimian’s panicked expression, she knew it wasn’t a joke. Reluctantly, she left. “Alright, I’ll go. Make sure to contact me.”
Lin Haimian nodded hastily, sending the girl off before composing herself and stepping out. Seeing Liang Tongheng’s expression, she shrank back.
Liang Tongheng’s face darkened as he strode towards Lin Haimian. Seeing her step out and then shrink back in fear, his anger flared. Did she think she could escape after causing trouble?
Standing at the corner, Liang Tongheng waited with a dark expression.
Lin Haimian heard his footsteps stop and hesitated before finally stepping out.
With her head down, she looked like a child admitting her mistake. Her voice was barely audible. “President.”
Suppressing his anger, Liang Tongheng gritted his teeth. “Did you ignore my instructions?”
Lin Haimian shook her head vigorously. “No, no. I just didn’t want to embarrass you again, so I thought I’d move further away. It’s safe and quiet here.”
Liang Tongheng rolled his eyes at her foolish reasoning. “Aren’t you afraid of being kidnapped?”
Lin Haimian looked up in shock. Seeing Liang Tongheng’s expression, she felt so scared and embarrassed that her legs gave out, and she sat on the ground without a sound.
Liang Tongheng’s eyes widened slightly, unable to believe she could be this embarrassing. His anger grew. “Get up.”
Lin Haimian tried to stand but couldn’t. “President, I’m sorry. My legs are weak. I can’t stand.”
Liang Tongheng hadn’t expected Lin Haimian to be even more embarrassing. Considering they were on someone else’s property, he suppressed his anger and roughly pulled her up.
Lin Haimian was genuinely scared. When Liang Tongheng pulled her, she lost her balance and fell into his arms, her hands gripping his shoulders for support.
Neither of them realized how intimate their position was. Lin Haimian tried to stand straight to receive the scolding but found she couldn’t break free from the hand on her waist.
