The President's Sweetheart Secretary - Chapter 20 - Finally Caught You
Ever since discovering that the manager she had fancied was actually the president, Lin Haimian had been in a state of despair. Outwardly, she maintained the appearance of diligently working, but inside, her mind was a chaotic stampede of wild thoughts. How could she have been so foolish to think he was just a department manager?
Yi Huahuan occasionally glanced at Lin Haimian. Knowing her well, she understood that now was not the time to provoke her further, or else she might break down in tears on the spot.
The two of them, each lost in their own thoughts, awkwardly passed a quiet morning. Not a word was exchanged, with one occasionally looking troubled and the other occasionally flashing a mischievous grin.
At lunchtime, the long-absent president and his assistant made an appearance. Lin Haimian was so startled she almost fled. She hadn’t yet recovered from the embarrassment of the morning!
Trying to act calm, she hastily picked a few dishes, and with her tray in hand, she was ready to make a quick escape. But Yi Huahuan, ever the enthusiastic one, warmly greeted the president, “President, Assistant, hello! Please, go ahead and order, don’t be shy.”
The entire canteen fell silent. Lin Haimian, in mid-step, froze in place, internally screaming at Yi Huahuan for choosing such a moment to act out.
Liang Tongheng nodded, “Hello, you go ahead.”
Since the president had spoken, Yi Huahuan didn’t insist. Instead, she turned her gaze to the assistant, but before she could speak, Liang Tongheng asked, “What’s your name?”
Yi Huahuan’s eyes curved into crescents with her smile, her heart racing with excitement. Oh my god, the president was asking her name! Holding back the urge to scream with joy, she replied in a clear voice that echoed through the canteen, “I’m Yi Huahuan from the logistics department, and this is my good partner Lin Haimian.”
Without needing further prompting, Yi Huahuan had already volunteered Lin Haimian’s name, drawing everyone’s attention to her, including Liang Tongheng’s.
Lin Haimian awkwardly moved her nearly stiff body, forcing herself to turn around and greet them, her voice small and trembling, “Hello, President, Assistant. If you don’t mind, would you like to sit with us?”
To her surprise, Liang Tongheng agreed, “Sure.”
Yi Huahuan’s eyes lit up like stars. Oh my, Haimian was finally showing some initiative!
Li Yi was speechless.
Everyone was shocked and amazed. Shocked that the president was so approachable, and amazed that the opportunity had been seized by two seemingly insignificant employees.
Lin Haimian almost choked on her own disbelief. She must have been out of her mind to invite the president to join them for lunch. Well, there goes her appetite for the day.
Yi Huahuan happily took the tray from Lin Haimian’s hands, grinning, “Haimian, you picked all my favorite dishes and none of yours. Thank you!”
Lin Haimian was momentarily stunned, looking down at the tray now in Yi Huahuan’s hands, her mind blank. In her nervousness and fear, she had just wanted to escape, and somehow ended up picking all the dishes she didn’t like.
Liang Tongheng raised an eyebrow but said nothing, simply moving to stand beside Lin Haimian to order his meal. Even though there was a fist’s distance between them, he noticed Lin Haimian’s entire body tense up the moment he got close.
Liang Tongheng was speechless.
After everyone had ordered, they found a table for four. Due to the overwhelming presence of the president and his assistant, the surrounding tables were empty, and the canteen was silent except for the sound of utensils.
Yi Huahuan, full of joy, sat across from Li Yi, leaving the best seats for Lin Haimian and the president, completely ignoring Li Yi’s unfriendly gaze.
“Haimian, why did you think the president was the manager? Didn’t you see the company’s announcement email? It had photos of the president and the assistant,” Yi Huahuan suddenly asked, trying to help Lin Haimian and the president bond.
Lin Haimian’s heart was already trembling uncontrollably. Without thinking, she replied, “I didn’t see the photos. On the president’s first day, I overslept, and when I ran into him in the elevator, I was already late. I just assumed he was a department manager going to a meeting.”
Liang Tongheng squinted, his gentle smile disappearing, replaced by a darkened expression and a gritted voice, “So it was you.”
Lin Haimian was puzzled. What did those simple four words mean? “Huh?”
Not only was Lin Haimian confused, but Yi Huahuan and Li Yi also cast questioning looks at Liang Tongheng, then back at the bewildered Lin Haimian, back and forth several times, waiting for the president’s explanation.
Unexpectedly, the president composed himself, returning to his usual gentle smile, and simply said, “It’s nothing.”
The three of them were speechless.
