The President's Sweetheart Secretary - Chapter 13 - Caught in the Act
“Oh, it’s nothing, I just owe a bit of money and haven’t had the chance to pay it back yet,” Lin Haimian said lazily.
Contrary to Lin Haimian’s nonchalant tone, Yi Huahuan’s eyes widened in shock, and her voice instantly heightened. “What? You actually owe money and haven’t paid it back? Oh my gosh, don’t tell me you took out a high-interest loan! How much did you borrow?”
The moment Yi Huahuan finished shouting, Lin Haimian had the urge to slap her or maybe even bash her head against a wall. Why? Because someone happened to walk by at that very moment, casting a surprised glance in their direction before quickly hurrying away. Lin Haimian couldn’t shake the feeling that this person looked somewhat familiar.
Yi Huahuan, after her outburst, also noticed the passerby. Her expression froze for a brief moment before going through a series of awkward contortions as she forcibly composed herself. She laughed dryly and added, “Haha, don’t be mad! I was just joking, okay? Just a little joke. Haha.”
“…” Lin Haimian, at this moment, had no desire to say anything at all. Silence seemed like the best option.
Yi Huahuan pouted slightly, feeling guilty. Still, that person just now… why did they seem so familiar? Could it be the handsome assistant who’s always by the president’s side? No, that didn’t make sense. At this time, he shouldn’t even be around here. Probably not him.
Meanwhile, having yet again displeased the president, Li Yi had been relegated to grunt work. Because of this, he happened to stumble upon something – something absolutely shocking.
Li Yi hurried back, bursting with a desire to report this news to Liang Tongheng and expose some kind of truth. “President, I have something to report!” he exclaimed.
Li Yi was so excited that he completely forgot about the need to knock. He pushed the door open with a bang and shouted loudly.
Liang Tongheng’s brow twitched as he squinted at the intruder. When he realized it was Li Yi, standing empty-handed, Liang’s gaze turned icy enough to freeze someone solid. Even his voice carried a gritted-teeth undertone as he asked, “Where is last year’s financial report?”
The smile on Li Yi’s face froze. He was doomed. He’d been so excited that he forgot the actual task assigned to him. Wailing internally, a sudden flash of inspiration struck, and he weakly ventured, “Um, about that… I was just wondering, should I also gather the records on He Group while I’m at it?”
Liang Tongheng’s expression softened slightly, and he gave a curt nod. “Go ahead.”
With a forced smile plastered on his face, Li Yi tactfully retreated, closing the door gently behind him. Deep down, he was crying rivers. He’d really screwed up this time. The He Group’s records… just thinking about them was exhausting.
When Lin Haimian and Yi Huahuan sneaked back into the office, the manager caught them red-handed. Seeing their slightly disheveled state, the manager merely nodded and let them off the hook. However, he did add a quick note, “Touch up your makeup.”
Lin Haimian was mortified. Yi Huahuan was even more embarrassed. The two exchanged glances, thoroughly mortified together.
After freshening up, Yi Huahuan, unable to suppress her curiosity any longer, opened up MSN, ready to get straight to the point. Her fingers flew across the keyboard, typing away furiously.
Logistics Department – Yi Huahuan
“Haimian, if you’re short on money, you can talk to me. I don’t have big bucks, but I can always spare a little. Come on, how much do you owe?”
Lin Haimian wanted to roll her eyes. She knew that unless she explained, Yi Huahuan wouldn’t be able to focus on work. Reluctantly, she paused her task.
Logistics Department – Lin Haimian
“I owe 80 yuan. I just haven’t run into the person yet.”
Logistics Department – Yi Huahuan
“…80? Are you kidding me?”
Logistics Department – Lin Haimian
“What else would it be? I live alone, have no one to feed, and my parents don’t rely on me for anything. What do I even have to spend money on?”
Yi Huahuan thought about it and realized she might have overreacted.
Logistics Department – Yi Huahuan
“Ugh, you’re so annoying. Why didn’t you make it clear earlier? You had me misunderstanding everything.”
Logistics Department – Lin Haimian
“Well, now that the misunderstanding is cleared up, get back to work. After work, come to my place for dinner.”
Logistics Department – Yi Huahuan
“Your command is my command!”
Despite working diligently, Lin Haimian and Yi Huahuan still had no choice but to work half an hour overtime. Both stretched and tried to ease their tired bodies.
“Let’s go. If we don’t hurry, we won’t be able to grab any good ingredients,” Lin Haimian said as she shut down her computer, urging the still-slouched Yi Huahuan to get moving.
Hearing the mention of food, Yi Huahuan mustered enough energy to shut down her computer, grab her bag, and half-lean her body on Lin Haimian. “I’m so hungry. Why don’t you carry me?”
Unmoved, Lin Haimian gently peeled Yi Huahuan off her. “Get off. It’s boiling hot, aren’t you afraid I’ll overheat?”
Yi Huahuan pouted, but she wasn’t ready to give up just yet. Just as she was about to stick to Lin Haimian again, she caught sight of Manager Lin out of the corner of her eye. Transforming in an instant, she straightened up and put on a proper, obedient demeanor.
“Manager, we’ll be heading out now,” Yi Huahuan said politely.
Lin Haimian offered a light smile and also greeted, “Manager, we’ll head off now.”
Manager Lin smiled and nodded. “Be careful on your way home, and don’t forget to prepare the materials for tomorrow afternoon’s meeting in the morning.”
“Got it!” Lin Haimian replied with a smile, pulling Yi Huahuan along as they left.
Once they were out of Manager Lin’s sight, the two resumed their playful banter as they exited the company building. Lin Haimian was busy looking down at her text messages, while Yi Huahuan instinctively glanced to her right.
And then she froze. Her eyes followed the driver of a black Benz until the car drove off, leaving only its rear in view. Finally managing to gulp nervously, she slowly moved her hand off Lin Haimian’s shoulder.
“Um… I think I might’ve messed up again,” Yi Huahuan said, looking like she was about to cry.
“Hmm?” Lin Haimian didn’t seem to catch on. “How could you screw up just by walking out of the building? Wait-you didn’t secretly cheat on me, did you?”
