The President Made Me Trend - Chapter 298 - Turning Himself In
Just as the situation seemed to be at a standstill, someone knocked on the interrogation room door and said to the male officer, “Chief, there’s a man outside claiming to be Mo Qinghuan’s husband, making quite a scene. He says he wants to turn himself in.”
Upon hearing this, Mo Qinghuan frowned immediately. She knew it was likely Lu Yucheng who had heard the news and rushed to the Police Station. But him turning himself in? This made Mo Qinghuan feel a tightness in her chest.
Huo-Jie and the lawyer exchanged glances. Someone turning themselves in to get Mo Qinghuan out of the Police Station would indeed be reassuring, but why did it have to be Lu Yucheng?
“Turning himself in?” The words seemed to revive the male officer, whose face had been pale from Mo Qinghuan’s lawyer’s arguments. He practically jumped from his chair and asked repeatedly, “Are you sure you didn’t mishear? Is he really here to confess?”
“Yes, Chief, I wouldn’t have misheard,” the person nodded, then continued, looking at Mo Qinghuan, “However, Mr. Lu insists on seeing Miss Mo before he’s willing to reveal the truth.”
“A meeting?” The male officer frowned, pondering for a moment. This case had put considerable pressure on the Police Station, both from the internet and higher-ups. Shen Meng was a public figure, and her tragic death had intensified the urgency to solve the case. With someone now offering to turn themselves in, the case had progressed further. To expedite the investigation, the officer reluctantly agreed, “Alright, I’ll allow them to meet, but only with police supervision.”
Mo Qinghuan quickly stood up, ignoring the officer’s calls, and rushed to the lobby. Sure enough, she saw Lu Yucheng arguing with several officers. He seemed to have arrived in a hurry, his forehead covered in beads of sweat.
“Yucheng?” Just uttering his name was enough to make Mo Qinghuan choke up.
Upon hearing her voice, Lu Yucheng turned around. As their eyes met, he pushed past everyone and pulled her into his arms, soothingly saying, “I’m sorry, Qinghuan. I learned about this too late, and you’ve suffered because of it.”
“No, Yucheng, this has nothing to do with you. Why would you turn yourself in? You knew nothing about the private detective!” Mo Qinghuan couldn’t bear to see Lu Yucheng sacrifice himself further; she’d rather be the one going to prison.
But before she could finish, Lu Yucheng covered her mouth with his hand and made a ‘shh’ gesture. His eyes were filled with concern as he reminded her, “From now on, you mustn’t say you have anything to do with the private detective. I’m the one turning myself in. Even though we’re married, you need to walk away from this, putting all the blame on me. That’s the only way you’ll safely leave the Police Station, understand?”
“No, Yucheng, I can’t selfishly do that. Don’t take the blame. If you take on all the charges, I’ll only feel worse.” Holding him tightly, even as the officers tried to separate them, neither wanted to let go.
She knew that everything Lu Yucheng did was for her sake, but precisely because of this, her heart ached even more. She was already wronged enough, and now Lu Yucheng taking all the blame seemed even more unjust.
Yet, despite this, Lu Yucheng responded with indulgent affection, “Trust me, watching you go to prison would break my heart. You need to stay outside and continue investigating the whereabouts of that private detective. That’s how we can clear our names, Qinghuan. I’ve made up my mind, trust me.”
Huo-Jie and the lawyer stepped forward, witnessing the scene. Huo-Jie couldn’t help but cover her mouth, tears streaming down her face. Perhaps this was what they called true love in adversity. Even when Mo Qinghuan faced the daunting challenge of being accused of hiring a hitman, Lu Yucheng remained steadfast, even going so far as to claim he was surrendering himself to the police. Such love was truly remarkable.
The male officer, impatient, approached and ordered other officers to forcibly separate the two. He addressed the struggling Lu Yucheng, “Are you Lu Yucheng, Mo Qinghuan’s husband? You just said the private detective was hired by you and has nothing to do with Mo Qinghuan. Is that true?”
“Of course,” Lu Yucheng replied, casting a gentle glance at Mo Qinghuan before continuing with a cold smile, “Anyone familiar with Showbiz knows that Shen Meng and my wife have always been at odds. She has repeatedly spread malicious rumors to tarnish my wife’s reputation. I heard that the poisoning incident was also linked to her. My hatred for her is deep-seated. But for my wife’s reputation, I secretly hired a private detective to follow her, looking for the right opportunity to act. This was all my doing, and it has nothing to do with my wife.”
Lu Yucheng’s words were full of holes, deliberately glossing over the details. After all, he was innocent, and taking on all the blame was already challenging enough. How could he possibly cover every detail flawlessly?
Tears streamed from Mo Qinghuan’s eyes as she stomped her feet, desperately trying to defend Lu Yucheng, “No, that’s not how it is. Yucheng hasn’t done anything wrong. His so-called surrender is just for my sake…”
Before she could finish, Lu Yucheng broke free from the officers’ restraint and silenced Mo Qinghuan with a kiss, reminiscent of the way he kissed her on their wedding day.
The officers, including Huo-Jie, blushed at the sight. Despite them being a married couple, kissing publicly in the Police Station was unexpected, and for a moment, everyone forgot to intervene. Little did they know, Lu Yucheng did this solely to prevent Mo Qinghuan from speaking further.
He leaned close to her ear, whispering softly, “Qinghuan, you need to leave the Police Station safely and find the real culprit. If you keep talking, the police will think we’re coordinating our testimonies, and neither of us will get out. The real criminal will roam free while we sacrifice our future to take the blame. Don’t you think that’s too unfair?”
Lu Yucheng’s warning brought Mo Qinghuan back to her senses. She felt the lingering warmth of his lips on hers, then closed her eyes, forcing herself not to watch as Lu Yucheng was taken away by the police, though her heart couldn’t help but bleed.
Huo-Jie instructed the lawyer to stay behind, handling Lu Yucheng’s interrogation during his detention at the Police Station, while she supported Mo Qinghuan, ensuring she left the station without delay.
Persistent reporters remained on the scene. Seeing Mo Qinghuan, who had just been taken into the Police Station and then announced innocent and released, they ignored her distressed expression and pressed forward with questions:
“Miss Mo, is it true that you encouraged Mr. Lu to take the blame for your freedom? As a married couple, don’t you think this is unfair to Mr. Lu?”
“Yes, Miss Mo, when do you plan to confess? Since you committed murder, shouldn’t you pay the price and spend the rest of your life in prison?”
