The President Made Me Trend - Chapter 296 - Taken for Investigation
“No problem, Qinghuan. I’ll mobilize everything around me to find that beast, but for now, try not to go out. Or better yet, create the illusion that you’ve disappeared,” Huo-Jie advised anxiously. She knew that once the police identified the private detective as the suspect, Mo Qinghuan, as the employer, would inevitably be implicated in the murder plot. If she ended up at the police station, it might be too late to turn things around.
The news continued to spread like wildfire. Mo Qinghuan hung up the phone and stood by the window, staring at the not-so-bright moonlight, feeling a vague sense of helplessness.
She glanced back at the empty bed. If Lu Yucheng were here, she would have a shoulder to lean on. Unfortunately, he wasn’t, and she didn’t want to call him and disturb Mother Lu, who was recuperating. Everything fell on Mo Qinghuan’s shoulders alone.
Throughout the sleepless night, she pondered the same question repeatedly: Why did the private detective kill Shen Meng? She had only hired him to monitor Shen Meng, to find out who the mysterious person supporting her was. In their line of work, even if there were physiological needs, they should seek other women to satisfy them, not fixate greedily on Shen Meng. What was going on?
Mo Qinghuan thought deeply but couldn’t figure it out. She felt as if she was overlooking something or perhaps there was something she wasn’t aware of. Her brows furrowed tightly, and after a night of mental exertion, her head throbbed painfully. Helplessly, she sat back on the bed, rubbing her temples, her face pale.
Knock, knock, knock.
A series of urgent knocks sounded at the door. Judging by the sound, Mo Qinghuan deduced it couldn’t be Lu Yucheng, and it was still early, so he wouldn’t be back so soon.
“Who is it?” She sat on the bed, unwilling to get up, and forced herself to speak despite feeling unwell, “Come in, the door’s open.”
About two seconds later, the maid responsible for taking care of Little Bun rushed in, looking flustered and stamping her feet, clearly at a loss. She glanced at Mo Qinghuan, whose complexion wasn’t good, and urged, “Madam, something terrible has happened. You should leave the house and avoid the spotlight for a while.”
“Avoid the spotlight?” Mo Qinghuan was puzzled. Why would she suddenly say such a thing? She couldn’t help but frown and asked, “What happened? Calm down and tell me, what’s going on downstairs?”
Earlier, she had vaguely heard some strange noises from downstairs, but she was too exhausted and assumed the maids had clumsily broken something, so she didn’t pay much attention. But now, with the maid rushing into her room, Mo Qinghuan couldn’t help but feel suspicious.
“The police… the police suddenly barged in and said they want to take Madam to the police station for investigation.” The maid was on the verge of tears. Ever since Mo Qinghuan had forgiven her last time and allowed her to stay in the villa to take care of Little Bun, the maid had harbored a deep sense of gratitude towards Mo Qinghuan. She had dealt with the police and came upstairs to inform Mo Qinghuan, essentially giving her a heads-up.
Seeing Mo Qinghuan still unmoved, the maid grew anxious. She stepped forward and shook Mo Qinghuan’s arm, urging, “Madam, why are you daydreaming at a time like this? You should leave here first. If you jump out of the window, I’ll hold off the police. They shouldn’t catch you so quickly.”
The maid had seemingly planned everything in her mind while coming upstairs. She would obstruct the police to help Mo Qinghuan escape, even if it meant obstructing justice. But seeing the police barging in so aggressively, even knowing this was the Lu family villa, they were still so brazen. It indicated that if they caught Mo Qinghuan, they wouldn’t be gentle, which was what worried the maid the most.
“Have you considered the consequences of jumping from the second floor without any protective measures?” Mo Qinghuan had anticipated the police’s arrival long ago. She curled her lips into a cold smile, seeing the maid’s puzzled expression, and continued:
“Jumping from this height might not be fatal, but a broken leg is almost certain. Plus, there’s a flowerbed below. If I get caught on the branches, bleeding profusely is expected. Then I wouldn’t just be a suspect for hiring a killer but also an actress who failed to escape-a disgraceful Best Actress in Showbiz. Do you think that’s a good idea?”
After hearing Mo Qinghuan’s analysis, the maid quickly waved her hands and explained, “Madam, that’s not what I meant. I just don’t want you to be taken by the police. Now that Mr. Lu isn’t home, what should we do?”
“Thank you for your concern, but I can’t go anywhere.” With that, Mo Qinghuan stood up and, before entering the bathroom, instructed the maid, “Go tell the police I’m taking a shower and ask them to wait downstairs for twenty minutes.”
The maid watched as Mo Qinghuan walked into the bathroom. She didn’t lock the door, perhaps to reassure the maid or for some other reason, leaving the maid even more puzzled. After hesitating for a while, the maid finally gathered the courage to knock on the door again, asking, “Madam, you’re not really going to the Police Station, are you?”
“Innocence will prove itself. To clear my name, I either need to be taken to the Police Station for investigation or find the private detective involved. Those are the only two possibilities.” Mo Qinghuan had figured it out last night. Even if the police hadn’t come, she would have gone to the Police Station herself.
“But shouldn’t we wait for Mr. Lu to come back and discuss this before making a decision?” The maid was worried. If Mo Qinghuan was taken away and Lu Yucheng returned to the Lu family villa to hear the news, how would he react?
However, Mo Qinghuan didn’t want to say more about the maid’s reminder. Helpless, the maid went downstairs and relayed Mo Qinghuan’s words verbatim to the impatient police officers.
This, however, sparked strong dissatisfaction among the police. Someone suggested, “In all my years, I’ve never encountered a situation where we have to wait so long to take a suspect.”
“That’s right. So what if she’s a famous actress? The law is the same for everyone, and actresses have no special privileges.”
After some discussion, they decided to forcefully enter the room to take Mo Qinghuan away. Seeing this, the maid quickly joined forces with a few others to block the path to the second-floor hallway, accusing, “This is the Lu family. The madam is taking a shower. As police officers, you can’t break the law, so you can’t go in!”
“We’re here to take a suspect, not to have any improper thoughts about your madam. Your attitude is considered non-cooperation with the investigation,” the police retorted, unwilling to back down.
However, just as the two sides were at an impasse, Mo Qinghuan appeared in the hallway, dressed in jeans and a white shirt. Facing the police’s justifications, she smiled indifferently and remarked:
“Suspect? I’ve played many righteous heroes in Showbiz, but being called a suspect is a first for me.”
