The President Made Me Trend - Chapter 289 - Taking the Blame
Seeing the barrage of sharp questions being thrown at Mo Qinghuan, Lu Yucheng quickly stepped forward to shield her, addressing the reporters, “I was the one who hired a private investigator to follow Shen Meng. Qinghuan was unaware of it, so please don’t trouble her with matters unrelated to her.”
Lu Yucheng’s response made Mo Qinghuan frown. She understood he was trying to protect her, but it felt like he was taking the blame upon himself.
Mo Qinghuan tugged at Lu Yucheng’s jacket, about to speak, but he seemed to sense her thoughts. He turned back, lowering his voice to remind her, “Qinghuan, isn’t it a husband’s duty to step up in times like this? Leave it to me, please don’t push yourself.”
“The one truly stepping up is you, Yucheng. You’re just inviting trouble for yourself,” she replied. After all, she was Mo Qinghuan, a force to be reckoned with in showbiz. How could a few trivial questions from reporters bring her down?
But seeing Lu Yucheng defend her so staunchly, her heart felt a pang of emotion. Sure enough, as soon as Lu Yucheng took the blame, the reporters began to criticize:
“Mr. Lu is Miss Mo’s husband. Their words can’t be trusted.”
“Miss Mo, is Mr. Lu deliberately protecting you? Since marrying into the Lu family, you’ve caused Mr. Lu to lose his shares in the Lu Group and were then kicked out of the Lu family. Now, are you trying to shift the blame onto Mr. Lu as part of your plan?”
“Enough! Which magazine are you from? Give me your editor’s name! I’m going to sue your magazine!” Lu Yucheng’s anger finally erupted at the reporters’ words.
He showed his decisive side, determined to sue the magazine that insulted him and Mo Qinghuan. Perhaps it was this outburst that frightened the previously aggressive reporters into silence.
Not only were the reporters intimidated, but even Mo Qinghuan believed Lu Yucheng’s anger was genuine until he discreetly held her hand, revealing that he was merely scaring the reporters to stop them from making outrageous remarks.
Soon, Huo-Jie and Xiaoxue arrived. Of course, thanks to Huo-Jie’s reckless driving, they were followed by a few traffic officers, and the sound of sirens startled the reporters.
When Mo Qinghuan saw Huo-Jie and Xiaoxue rushing over, she couldn’t help but ask in confusion, “Huo-Jie, what’s going on?”
Even if Huo-Jie was anxious, in such a situation, calling the police might not have been much help, right?
“It’s a long story, Qinghuan, Mr. Lu, are you both okay?” Huo-Jie asked awkwardly, inspecting them both to ensure they were unharmed. Only then did she unleash her fierce side, yelling at the reporters:
“How dare you! Do you know who they are? How dare you corner them here? Oh? I recognize a few familiar faces among you! I’ll personally call your editors to condemn your actions. Get ready to write apologies or face dismissal!”
Dismissal? Hearing that word, the reporters dared not act out any further, hastily explaining to Huo-Jie, “Huo-Jie, please be lenient. We’re just doing our jobs, forced by circumstances.”
“Exactly, otherwise how could we dare to provoke Qinghuan-Jie and Mr. Lu? Our magazine received a tip-off that they were feeling guilty and planning to flee abroad, so we set up an ambush here early in the morning.”
“What guilt and escape? Do you even know how to talk?” Xiaoxue stepped forward, spreading her arms wide to shield Lu Yucheng and Mo Qinghuan.
Seeing her brave and fearless stance, Lu Yucheng couldn’t help but turn to Mo Qinghuan and say, “This young girl, wasn’t she quite timid before?”
“Under Huo-Jie’s wing, there’s no one with a mild temper,” Mo Qinghuan said with a mix of amusement and helplessness, yet she was deeply touched by Xiaoxue’s desire to protect them.
“Enough with the nonsense! You bully Qinghuan and expect me to turn a blind eye? Not a chance!” Huo-Jie stood with her hands on her hips, looking like a fierce tigress.
Just as Huo-Jie finished speaking, Mo Qinghuan pulled her aside, having heard the reporters mention that someone deliberately tipped off the magazine about their supposed plan to go abroad to avoid the heat. Mo Qinghuan frowned and asked the reporters, who looked rather aggrieved, “Alright then, tell us who provided you with this information, and maybe I’ll persuade Huo-Jie to drop the idea of suing you.”
“Really, Qinghuan-Jie?” The reporters, no longer as brazen as before, were clearly intimidated by Huo-Jie’s notorious toughness. Losing their jobs over this would be a huge loss.
Seeing Mo Qinghuan nod in confirmation, the reporters finally confessed, “Actually, we don’t know the identity of the informant. We only traced the phone number, which showed it was dialed from the Lu family villa.”
“Yes, the number our magazine received was the same,” another reporter chimed in.
Upon hearing this, Mo Qinghuan and Lu Yucheng exchanged a knowing glance. It seemed they had figured out the answer. The plan to leave the Lu family for the airport was known only to the maids, and since the number was from the villa’s landline, it appeared one of the maids had leaked the information.
“This is outrageous,” Huo-Jie understood the secret too but didn’t have time for further inquiry. For Mo Qinghuan’s reputation, she deliberately found an excuse to explain, “You really believe an anonymous call? Our Qinghuan has been spotless in Showbiz for years. Why don’t you think about it? Shen Meng’s death has nothing to do with Qinghuan. Shen Meng’s chaotic private life led her to provoke some big shot and get killed in the wilderness. Does that mean everyone who had a bad relationship with her is a suspect? I think your brains are a bit too simplistic.”
“Yes, yes, Huo-Jie, you’re right. We indeed misunderstood Qinghuan-Jie. We apologize to Qinghuan-Jie here,” the reporters responded awkwardly.
With that, the matter was temporarily settled. Although Mo Qinghuan knew the reporters didn’t truly believe Huo-Jie’s explanation, they were merely worried about losing their jobs, hence the temporary compromise.
Fortunately, throughout the ordeal, Lu Yucheng’s hand remained tightly clasped around hers, as if encouraging her, a comfort that brought her great solace.
At this moment, the traffic police approached to disperse the crowd. Upon seeing Mo Qinghuan and Mr. Lu, they were quite surprised, as such public figures were usually seen only on TV. Who would’ve thought they’d be so lucky to see them in person today?
However, they had a job to do, and handed Huo-Jie a breathalyzer, sternly reprimanding, “You’re all grown-ups, yet drinking in broad daylight and speeding on the road? You really don’t take us traffic police seriously, do you?”
