The President Made Me Trend - Chapter 279 - The Results Are In
Three days later, Huo-Jie hurriedly arrived at the Lu family home. Her expression was grim, and Mo Qinghuan immediately guessed that the investigation she had commissioned from the private detective had yielded results.
After instructing a maid to serve Huo-Jie a glass of iced water, Mo Qinghuan spoke up, “Huo-Jie, is there news about that matter?”
“There is indeed news,” Huo-Jie replied, taking a large sip of water. Under Mo Qinghuan’s urging, she continued, “The perpetrator is someone we’re all familiar with. It’s just that she hasn’t been in the public eye for months, so we temporarily forgot about her.”
Following Huo-Jie’s lead, Mo Qinghuan furrowed her brows. “Are you saying it’s Shen Meng?”
Among those they knew, who hadn’t appeared in the public eye recently and held a grudge against Mo Qinghuan, who else could it be but Shen Meng?
As Huo-Jie had mentioned, they had thought Shen Meng would lay low after her downfall, and no one had paid her much mind. But unexpectedly, her hatred for Mo Qinghuan had only intensified.
Huo-Jie nodded, her eyes filled with severity. “That vile woman has some nerve, hiring someone to kill? I’ve already handed the video evidence over to the police. They’ll take care of it.”
“So it really is her,” Mo Qinghuan mused, astonished at the lengths Shen Meng would go to for fame, willing to commit any despicable act. Truly terrifying.
Seeing Mo Qinghuan’s troubled expression, Huo-Jie offered comfort, “At least the matter is coming to a close. Once the police find evidence of Shen Meng’s hired hit, they’ll close the case. Then you’ll be free to go out and about.”
“Alright, Huo-Jie, if you hear anything, please let me know immediately.” Mo Qinghuan forced a smile, determined to visit Shen Meng in prison once the case was settled, to ask why she harbored such deep resentment and how life behind bars was treating her.
After Huo-Jie left, Lu Yucheng returned from the sanatorium. Noticing Mo Qinghuan’s pale face, he approached with concern, “Qinghuan, are you feeling unwell?”
“No, it’s just that Huo-Jie came by earlier.” Mentioning Huo-Jie immediately reminded Lu Yucheng of the private detective matter, and he tensed up, asking urgently, “Does this mean there’s a lead on the poison case?”
If the private detective had indeed uncovered evidence pointing to Lu Xuan as the culprit, it would be good news. However, Lu Xuan was cunning and unlikely to leave traces easily.
Mo Qinghuan didn’t notice the change in Lu Yucheng’s expression and sighed, “Yes, Shen Meng has reportedly been summoned by the police. She should be at the Police Station giving her statement now.”
“Shen Meng?” If Mo Qinghuan hadn’t mentioned her, Lu Yucheng would have almost forgotten about that woman. The private detective’s findings pointed to her? Lu Yucheng’s brows furrowed deeply. So Lu Xuan wasn’t the culprit? How could that be?
Nestled in Lu Yucheng’s arms, Mo Qinghuan sighed, “It seems she truly despises me, believing my return stole everything that should have been hers. That’s why she resorted to hiring someone to kill me, isn’t it?”
“Don’t worry. Now that the culprit’s identity has been uncovered, we just need to wait for the police to handle it,” Lu Yucheng reassured, though his heart remained unsettled. He couldn’t shake the suspicion that Lu Xuan was behind the strange occurrences since his return. His instincts screamed that Lu Xuan was orchestrating these events from the shadows.
During Mo Qinghuan’s hospital stay, Shen Meng, unwilling to see Mo Qinghuan happier than herself, had also meddled. Unlike Lu Xuan, she wasn’t clever enough, which led to her slip-up and getting caught by the private detective.
After Huo-Jie handed the evidence to the police, Shen Meng was summoned. Even at the Police Station, she maintained her glamorous appearance and coldly denied the accusations, “Officer, please investigate thoroughly. Yes, my relationship with Mo Qinghuan isn’t great, but I’m a law-abiding citizen. Why would I resort to hiring a hitman? This is clearly a setup.”
“Miss Shen, the evidence is right here. You should come clean,” the officer urged, shaking his head at her arrogance.
Shen Meng scoffed, “Evidence? I swear on my life, I haven’t done anything immoral. All I did was pay a journalist to take pictures at the hospital. If you don’t believe me, you can question the journalist right now.”
Her response led the police to the journalist’s residence. Once at the Police Station, the journalist confessed, “I did take money from Shen Meng to capture photos of Liang Yi visiting Mo Qinghuan, aiming to prove Mo Qinghuan’s infidelity. That’s all I did.”
The journalist’s admission left the investigation at a standstill. At this point, Shen Meng’s lawyer appeared at the Police Station, asserting, “If the police lack sufficient evidence to charge Miss Shen with hiring a hitman, I have the right to take her away.”
With no choice, the police released Shen Meng.
News of Shen Meng’s release quickly reached Mo Qinghuan. She had thought the case was settled, only to find out the police had let Shen Meng go.
Determined to get answers, Mo Qinghuan decided to visit the Police Station. Huo-Jie drove her there, cautioning, “Qinghuan, I know you’re upset, but this is the police’s decision. We can’t interfere.”
“Don’t worry, Huo-Jie. I’m just going to find out why, not to cause trouble,” Mo Qinghuan replied, her face expressionless.
At the Police Station, the chief received them and regretfully explained, “I’m sorry, Miss Mo. Due to insufficient evidence against Shen Meng, we had to release her.”
“But wasn’t there evidence? How can there suddenly be insufficient evidence?” Mo Qinghuan sensed the chief was withholding information and was determined to uncover the truth.
Huo-Jie chimed in, “Yes, Chief. You say the police serve the people, and we’re in dire need of help. Since the poisoning incident, Qinghuan’s life has been severely impacted. She can’t take on work, and even normal activities require supervision. The culprit is to blame, and you can’t dismiss us with ‘insufficient evidence.'”
The chief sighed, “It’s not just about insufficient evidence. There’s a powerful figure backing Miss Shen, who intervened and even sent a lawyer. We’re truly powerless against such influence.”
