The President Comes Knocking - Chapter 215 - The Lin Family
This outcome was within Mu Han’s expectations. He nodded slightly, saying nothing.
Though Mu Han’s demeanor hadn’t changed much, Li Yan could still sense that his mood had dipped another notch. Glancing up, he noticed that Mu Han’s gaze remained fixed on the scenery outside the window, but his expression had grown somewhat inscrutable, as if lost in thought.
In this state, Mu Han exuded an inexplicable aura of authority, making others hesitant to look directly at him. Li Yan quickly averted his gaze and lowered his head, wisely choosing to remain silent to give Mu Han some time to process and think.
The silence didn’t last very long-around two minutes-before Mu Han reverted back to his usual self. He looked down at the fountain pen in his hand, his fingers absentmindedly stroking the intricate patterns on its barrel. His voice, devoid of any discernible emotion, broke the quiet. “What about Lin Wei? How is she?”
Lin Wei was Lin Tianyou’s only child, a daughter. Having lost her mother at an early age, she had been doted upon by Lin Tianyou as if she were the center of his world. This indulgence had made her somewhat unruly over the years, and she had developed a sharp, headstrong personality from a young age.
In Mu Han’s memory, Lin Wei had once expressed an interest in him. His father had even attempted to arrange a marriage between them, but the proposal had been firmly rejected by Mu Han’s mother. At the time, her reasoning had been that marriage was a significant life decision and that the children themselves should have the autonomy to decide, without undue interference from their parents.
Though Madam Mu had phrased her rejection quite tactfully, her intention was unmistakable. Mu Han could still vividly recall Lin Wei’s incredulous expression at the time. Lin Tianyou’s reaction had been no less revealing-although he had tried his best to maintain composure, traces of his dissatisfaction had inevitably shown through.
This was hardly surprising. After all, no matter how nicely Madam Mu had framed it, the underlying fact was clear: his marriage proposal had been rejected outright without hesitation.
From a practical standpoint, there was no real need for Madam Mu to reject the proposal so decisively at that time. After Mu Han’s father had passed away, the Mu family had been left in a vulnerable position, without a clear leader. The elderly were too frail, the younger generation too inexperienced, and the sole figure of reasonable stature and age was a woman-one whom the company’s shareholders did not take seriously.
Lin Tianyou, on the other hand, had been the only person in that circle who had openly pledged his support to the Mu family.
From a young age, Mu Han had proven to be extraordinarily mature for his age. With his naturally reserved personality, he paid little attention to his prospective partner in his future marriage. As a result, the idea of forming a strategic alliance through marriage to secure a strong ally for his family was something he neither resisted nor embraced.
That day, after Lin Tianyou took Lin Wei and left, Mu Han had questioned his mother about her decision. “Why did you reject them? Wouldn’t this have been a beneficial arrangement for us?” he had asked.
Mu Han no longer remembered the expression on Madam Mu’s face at that moment, but her words, full of care and profound meaning, were still crystal clear in his mind: “Marriage is not a game; it’s not something to decide on a whim. And no matter how difficult times may get for the Mu Family, we will never rely on such tactics to secure our future.”
And indeed, Madam Mu had stayed true to her words. After her husband’s passing, she had stepped up on her own and braved the turbulent storm that threatened the Mu Family. Fueled by her determination to protect her family and her children, she had single-handedly stabilized their precarious situation. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that one of the reasons Mu Han was able to rapidly rebuild and grow the Mu Family after returning from the military was because of the foundation she secured during those difficult years.
They say that behind every successful man, there are always two women-his mother and his wife. Although Mu Han was still unmarried, the tremendous support he had received from his mother had played an undeniable role in his achievements.
In truth, Mu Han was deeply grateful for Madam Mu’s refusal back then. Without the burden of a forced engagement, he had been free to pursue Chu Qianqian without unnecessary complications or restrictions.
“Lin Wei is still under Wang Wenzhi’s protection,” Li Yan reported, returning the conversation to current matters. “According to what we’ve uncovered, she’s being hidden in a villa registered under Wang Wenzhi’s name. She hasn’t left the place for quite some time.”
As he mentioned Lin Wei’s name, Li Yan’s brow furrowed ever so slightly. He harbored little sympathy for this woman. Even after her father had been imprisoned, Lin Wei had shown no signs of remorse or concern. Instead, she had comfortably taken refuge under the wing of her lover, as if nothing had happened.
Mu Han didn’t have a favorable opinion of this type of woman either. A mocking smile curved his lips as he commented, half-jokingly, half-regretfully, “Ah, the undying love of a parent. Lin Tianyou’s fall this time-being manipulated by Wang Wenzhi into stealing company secrets-was more than half because of his precious daughter. And yet, look at her now. Tsk, in the end, his devotion to Lin Wei pales in comparison to how much Lin Wei prioritizes her own safety and the affections of her lover.”
Li Yan’s expression turned equally unsettled at this statement. Wang Wenzhi’s reputation in City A was notorious. It took no effort to find out that his behavior in relationships was unscrupulous at best. With just a bit of digging, one could also uncover whispers about his unspeakable kinks. Very few women who got involved with him had good outcomes. Nevertheless, Lin Wei had chosen to align herself with him, disregarding all the risks. It was a decision that neither Mu Han nor Li Yan could fathom.
“Has Lin Wei completely lost her mind? Of all the people, she chose to get involved with Wang Wenzhi? Everyone in the circle knows about his penchant for sadism-it’s not exactly a new rumor. Even though there’s no solid evidence, anyone with common sense can tell this isn’t baseless gossip.
“What kind of overblown confidence does Lin Wei have to provoke someone like Wang Wenzhi? Or… does she have unspeakable interests in that area too?”
Mu Han listened to the mockery in Li Yan’s words without a change in his demeanor. The faint smirk on his face remained as his tone adopted a hint of amusement. “If I remember correctly, according to what we found in our earlier investigation, Wang Wenzhi’s sadistic tendencies have only worsened lately. I even heard someone might have died because of him?”
“Yes,” Li Yan replied with a nod, his disdain for such cruel behavior evident in his eyes. “Last time, Wang Wenzhi accidentally killed two hostesses at a bar. Their families went to the bar, trying to create a public uproar and demand justice. In the end, they nearly got taken care of by Wang Quan’s men.”
“Fortunately, I had someone keeping an eye on Wang Wenzhi. When we saw what was happening, we stepped in and rescued the families. We even fabricated evidence to make Wang Quan’s men think they were already dead. But the victims were severely injured, and one is still bedridden in the hospital to this day. It might take some time before they can be used as evidence against the Wang Family.”
“There’s no rush,” Mu Han replied with a slight shake of his head, his eyes gleaming with an unspoken intent. In a quiet but firm tone, he added, “Wang Wenzhi created a mess for me this time. Naturally, I need to take my time, prepare carefully, and give him a surprise in return. I need him to understand that the Mu Family isn’t so easily bullied.”
“Book me a flight-tomorrow at noon… No, make it in the morning.”
