The Mystical Feng Shui Files - Chapter 16 - The Elevator's Female Ghost
Hu Tieming halted his descent down the stairs, coincidentally stopping at the landing between the first and second floors. Behind him stood the little boy.
“I was wrong, I was wrong! Let me go home…”
The boy remained in the corner, muttering to himself.
“How do you know about this?” Hu Tieming asked, his mouth agape in astonishment. “He’s the son of Teacher Fang from our school. He was punished by his father for misbehaving and made to stand outside. It wasn’t the first time, but that day a heavy storm hit. The boy, out of curiosity, watched the lightning from the window right here, where we’re standing. Somehow, a piece of steel pipe fell from above, and a bolt of lightning struck it, changing its course. It flew through this very window and… the boy was gone.”
I paused, sensing the malevolent aura around the boy intensifying as Hu Tieming spoke.
Suddenly, the boy lifted his head, revealing eyes as white as snow and a gaping wound on his neck. His voice grew louder.
“Let me go home! Let me go home! Ah…”
His mouth opened wide, emitting a sound that others couldn’t hear, but it pierced my eardrums painfully.
The malevolent aura threatened to envelop Hu Tieming, and the clutter in the hallway began to tremble.
A pile of bricks next to a jar of pickles wobbled, ready to topple.
I quickly quickened my pace and tapped Hu Tieming on the shoulder.
“Teacher Hu, wait for me!”
“Sure, it’s a bit dark in the hallway. Just hold onto my shoulder,” Hu Tieming chuckled.
I glanced back to see the boy had returned to his previous state, head down, mumbling, “Let me go home, I was wrong…”
As we exited the building, the people who had been chatting at the entrance were gone.
I exhaled deeply. It was impossible not to feel nervous; after all, it was my first time handling such matters alone.
The spirits in the building were wandering spirits, lingering due to unresolved grievances.
These wandering spirits typically didn’t harm people, and I wouldn’t easily attempt to subdue them.
My master once told me that these spirits would eventually encounter someone who would fulfill their final wish, allowing them to dissipate and enter reincarnation.
If we intervened prematurely, we might cause them to miss the person they were waiting for, affecting their future rebirth.
Hu Tieming led me along a side path into the campus.
By now, there weren’t many people left in the campus, just a few strolling around. The nearby buildings loomed darkly, with only a few windows lit.
The path was lined with greenery, flowers, and trees.
Dim streetlights illuminated the red brick paths of the campus.
“That’s the main teaching building, over there is the music hall, and that’s the gymnasium…” Hu Tieming pointed out various buildings as we headed toward the back of the music hall.
Beyond a sports field, more buildings came into view.
“My office is in that building. Classes aren’t scheduled at fixed times; sometimes they’re in the main teaching building, sometimes in the annex, depending on the timetable. Those buildings over there are classrooms.”
I looked towards the office building he mentioned. It was about thirteen or fourteen stories high, with an artistic exterior. In front, there was a corridor with a trellis covered in wisteria, creating a beautiful environment.
However, in the dim light of the night, especially under the few street lamps nearby, the building appeared somewhat eerie and ghostly.
A window on the tenth floor was still lit.
Hu Tieming glanced up, “Huh? It’s the holidays, who’s still here this late?”
“Is that your office?” I asked.
“Yes! Come on, I’ll take you to see it!”
I followed Hu Tieming’s steps towards the building. As we reached the entrance under the wisteria-covered trellis, I suddenly felt something was off.
A thin mist seemed to rise around us, which was almost impossible in the scorching August heat of Jiang City. Moreover, the temperature seemed to drop slightly.
“Our school has a history of a hundred years!” Hu Tieming said with a smile as he walked ahead, “Except for the old teaching building in front, the playground and these buildings at the back were all built later, designed by renowned architects, warm in winter and cool in summer.”
I thought to myself, no wonder it’s cool in summer. The place was nearly engulfed by a malevolent aura.
The office building had an electronic door, accessible by card swipe.
Inside, the first floor was a lobby with a large mirror, inscribed with the year of the school’s anniversary. Surrounding it were large flower pots planted with lush bamboo and cypress, giving off a scholarly vibe.
I resisted the urge to twitch my lips. Both of these plants are known to attract spirits, and they had so many of them here.
“Let’s take the elevator up!” Hu Tieming led me to the side.
In front was a wide staircase that split into two after going up.
I glanced up but saw nothing unusual, so I followed him into the elevator.
As soon as the doors closed, I felt a chill from the side. Turning slightly, I saw a young woman with long hair, wearing a red dress, standing with her head lowered behind Hu Tieming.
I looked down and saw her feet hovering two centimeters above the ground, slowly moving towards Hu Tieming.
“With the elevator, climbing stairs is no longer an issue. In the past, even if the teaching buildings were tall, there were no elevators. This one was designed and donated by a successful alumnus as a gift to the school!”
Hu Tieming felt nothing and continued to introduce the building with a smile.
I stared at the woman, my fingers already forming a finger seal, and asked, “Has anything happened in this building?”
Hu Tieming was surprised again, “Master Jiang, I was already impressed with you before, but now I’m even more so. Is it true that in your line of work, you can tell if something’s happened just by walking around?”
“Was it a girl, a student?” I asked, remaining vigilant about the woman behind him.
This woman, or rather female ghost, was trying to attach herself to someone, a behavior indicating she wanted to possess someone.
Once possessed, she would seek revenge on those who wronged her or drain the yang energy from the host before moving on to another.
The fact that nothing had happened for so long suggested she had appeared only recently.
I didn’t know why this female ghost died, but she was still wearing a red dress when she died. Just from the hostility emanating from her, it was clear she died an unnatural death, full of resentment, and the malevolent aura she emitted made my skin crawl.
“It happened just before the holidays!” Hu Tieming said, watching the elevator floor numbers change, “This female student was a model student, both in character and academics. The school had even planned to recommend her for graduate studies. She was cheerful, and her piano skills had reached a performance level, making her a key talent in our music department. But no one expected that just as the holidays began, with everyone leaving and only a few teachers and students staying behind, she jumped from the building!”
I listened, watching the woman’s feet. Her toes were already touching the back of Hu Tieming’s heels. Just as I was about to act, there was a “ding” as the elevator doors opened.
“We’re here!” Hu Tieming stepped out, and the woman instantly stopped.
I breathed a sigh of relief, glanced back at her, and saw she had retreated to the corner of the elevator before stepping out.
For a female ghost with aggressive tendencies like this, I would normally capture her, but today’s priority was Hu Tieming. I would deal with her after finishing the task.
“Director Zhao? Working late, are you?” Hu Tieming’s voice came from ahead.
I looked up and saw a face shrouded in a resentful aura!
