The Journey of Resident Evil - Chapter 28 - To Save or Not to Save
The large yard is the last defense line. If it falls, we are doomed and must escape. At first, I suspected there was something wrong with the hand grenades, but then I realized they could only blow the monster away without causing real damage. It’s terrifying!
The bullets were already used up, so Liu Qi reluctantly picked up the machine gun. He seriously doubted whether even if the monster stood still, throwing hand grenades at it would cause any significant harm. But it was better than nothing.
I accidentally glanced at the monster’s big eyes and was shocked. The fragments that were lodged inside were gone, not thrown out, but pushed out as the wound healed. I was sure the wound had shrunk by at least half. Moreover, the arm that had been blown off by a bomb had regrown a small segment.
It’s indestructible! This monster can’t be killed! Damn it, someone come quickly! How is it not dying? Damn.
Liu Feng looked at the car and shouted, “Liu Yonglin, the monster is afraid of fire, let’s get some gasoline.”
I covered my nose, went to the garage, opened all the gasoline bottles, and noticed there was still plenty. Then I quickly went upstairs. Seeing the monster below, Liu Yonglin and I lifted the gasoline bottles and poured them over the monster.
The monster was soaked in gasoline, and then Liu Feng picked up the torch he was holding and threw it at the monster.
“Boom.” Flames erupted on the monster’s body.
“Is it over?” I asked hurriedly. Is it dead or not? This smell is so disgusting!
Ye Ling, Qimeng, Xueyang, Shen Wei, and Xueqi were all gagging.
The smell was extraordinarily disgusting, worse than feces!
“Is it dead yet?” A group of people blocked my view, and I couldn’t see if the zombie was dead or still alive!
“It’s almost dead!” It actually worked! Haha.
“Sigh, it’s finally dead. Gave me a scare, that bastard!” Liu Yonglin cursed.
Qimeng tried to pull me up, but she wasn’t as strong as Ye Xiang. Instead, she ended up getting pulled down on top of me. Just then, Liu Feng joined the fun, pushing Xueqi over as well. Ye Xiang stood up beside me and said, “Come on! Everyone together!”
Hearing this, everyone got excited. Qimeng’s hair was a bit messy as we all pushed each other around.
Damn, if we’re going to push, let’s push! But they were all piling on me, and I ended up flat on my back, so I cursed.
Taking advantage of Ye Xiang’s shove, I managed to lift Qimeng up. Ye Xiang pushed into empty air and toppled to the ground. Knowing Ye Xiang liked Ye Ling, I pushed her onto him.
Now it was Ye Xiang’s turn to suffer, pinned to the ground, exhausted from not having dinner last night. I stood with Qimeng and Xueqi, watching the scene, while Liu Feng playfully tussled with Ye Xiang.
Seeing that they were tired, I went over to the table and grabbed a corn cob, handing it to Qimeng and Xueqi, who were also quite hungry.
“Eat up! I’ll go fetch another one,” I said as I released Qimeng and Xueqi.
“Tian, tell them to stop messing around. Aren’t they hungry?” Xueqi remarked.
“Alright, stop it, Liu Feng, Liu Yonglin, what are you all still doing here?” I pointed at Qian Jing, signaling for him to help everyone up.
We had things to do!
Within a few minutes, it seemed they were genuinely tired, with Ye Xiang covered in dirt.
After everyone had a good laugh, we reconsidered our plan to go out to rescue people. On second thought, let’s forget about it. Facing another one of those zombies would be a certain death!
It’s so tough to kill; it’s good that it’s dead! Let’s be cautious at night and hope no more zombies like that come around. If they do, we’re doomed.
I shook my head, realizing that’s probably how it has to be. We can’t save anyone. Tomorrow, we’ll take turns on the rooftop. If we see someone to save, we will, but if not, we won’t risk it. We can’t just go out there and get ourselves killed.
“Silence. Do you guys want to go? Be heroes? But remember, it’s a life-or-death situation, and you only live once. If you die, you’re gone forever,” said Liu Qi, as he was the eldest, so he took the lead. Because we stayed silent, he had to speak those words. We didn’t take any action. Who doesn’t want to live? But living comfortably isn’t an option now. We have to be heroes, real heroes, not cowards hiding here.
Liu Yonglin thought about it and looked at me. I knew he wanted to go. He was full of a sense of justice, but he hesitated because of the girls around us. If they stayed home, we would still worry. What if zombies like today came by? If we all went together and bumped into one, none of us might make it back.
As night slowly descended, we finally found a well in the backyard. The water was clear, perhaps left by the troops stationed here.
A refreshing shower washed away the zombie stench, which was foul and nauseating. Just recalling that smell made me want to vomit.
Especially Fei Fei, she was so dramatic she actually threw up during dinner!
At night, with Fei Fei joining us, I once again went to sleep first, while Liu Feng, Ye Xiang, and Qian Jing stayed on watch outside.
I fell asleep with Qimeng and Xueqi beside me.
Qimeng wore a low-cut V-neck T-shirt, and the soft flesh inside moved with her. I worried if she moved too much, something might spill out.
But if Qimeng exposed herself in front of me, I wouldn’t dare face her. I couldn’t control myself anymore. I shifted to avoid physical contact with them and checked on Xueqi next to me.
“Alright then.”
I closed my eyes to sleep. Can I just sleep now? I’m sleeping!
I closed my eyes and was about to drift off when I suddenly heard the sound of a helicopter. Seriously, people arriving now? I cursed under my breath.
If they’re coming, fine, but why make such a big fuss, and so late at night? Wouldn’t it be better to come during the day? I mumbled a few more curses.
Qimeng and Xueqi were already woken up by the noise. I led them outside into the yard, but by then, the helicopter had flown away.
“Damn it,” Liu Yonglin muttered, picking up a gun and aiming at the departing helicopter.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
“Damn! That jerk said he had to meet the commander and would pick us up after his mission. I can’t stand these bastards!” Liu Feng said.
“Forget it! Let’s just go back to sleep. We can’t do much about it now. It’s fine! Even if they don’t come, we’ll be just fine on our own!” I said, seeing that we had enough worries of our own, waving my hand dismissively.
“Alright, alright! Everyone go back to sleep. We can switch shifts later!” Liu Qi added.
I took Qimeng and Xueqi back to the room and closed the door. Qimeng asked, “Tiankuang, do you think they’ll come back for us?”
I shook my head silently, wondering if they really would come back.
Xueqi noticed my silence and took my hand, saying, “Tian, don’t worry too much. Aren’t we doing just fine here? We don’t have to leave. I can stay here forever! What do you think, Qimeng-Jie?”
Xueqi, with her elegant demeanor, exuded a gentle grace, her skin delicate, expression relaxed, eyes full of warmth, cheeks blushing, with a faint yet sweet smile, gentle as an orchid, embodying indescribable tenderness and charm.
Qimeng, with skin as pure as snow and eyes like calm pools of water, carried an innate elegance and grace that captivated anyone who saw her, making others feel inferior, afraid to profane her presence. Yet her cool demeanor held an enchanting allure that one couldn’t help but be drawn to.
Fei Fei, reclining on a bench, was a sight to behold, illuminated by the firelight. Her complexion was as crystal-clear as jade, as radiant as a crescent halo or snow-laden trees, with a stunning figure full of charm and elegance, exuding warmth and softness. Her beauty was beyond compare, accentuated by her melodious voice and enchanting presence.
Shen Wei’s voice was as melodious as the tinkling of pearls, both gentle and clear. As I gazed at her, she appeared innocent and playful, her cheeks flushed. Despite her young age, her beauty was striking and her demeanor elegant, surpassing even those portrayed in paintings. She was truly like a precious gem.
Ye Ling, with a face like a bouquet of flowers and a slender figure, had her long hair draped down her back, secured with a pink ribbon. Dressed in white, she seemed enveloped by a halo of mist, otherworldly and ethereal. When she turned around, it was clear she was in her youth, her skin fair as snow and her beauty unmatched, almost unreal.
Life here was quite comfortable. Why risk it all? There’s no need. We should discuss it with everyone tomorrow. Now that we have the means-weapons and bombs-we should decide together whether to take action or not.
The morning sun pierced my eyes as I woke groggily to see Qimeng already awake.
Unable to resist, I planted a kiss on Qimeng’s cheek. Unexpectedly, Xueqi was also awake. “Tian, I want one too,” she said.
Wow, they’re really asking for it! Barely out of bed and already wanting a kiss, without even brushing teeth!
“Alright, alright! Xueqi, you get a kiss too!” I lightly kissed Xueqi on her flushed cheek, feeling quite content. I got up and headed to the rooftop, where I found Fei Fei and Liu Yonglin. I walked over and patted Liu Yonglin. “Everything okay last night?”
“Heh, if something had happened, could I sleep so soundly?” Liu Yonglin replied.
“Where’s Ye Xiang?” He was supposed to be on guard last night, but he must have gone back to sleep. That guy never seems to get enough rest.
Just talking about sleep made me feel drowsy again. I went downstairs and fetched a bucket of water from the well. The bucket was a military-grade one.
I was about to haul the water up when Liu Feng came over with a towel left by a soldier. Seeing me with the bucket, he quickly came over to help, as the bucket was large and filled with water, making it quite heavy. However, I had already managed to lift it by the time he arrived.
“You’re getting stronger, Tiankuang,” Liu Feng said, patting his head.
I remembered yesterday when I almost fell into the well while drawing water. Fortunately, Xueqi was there to pull me back, or I really would have fallen in.
“Heh, not really! I’m always like this! Yesterday was just an accident. Are you taking it seriously?” I admitted, recalling how I slipped. I wasn’t very strong-handed yesterday.
After I had finished washing my face, Liu Feng went to fetch some water. Standing to the side, I asked him, “Liu Feng, do you think we should go out and take a look around?”
“I think we should, but that zombie yesterday was really strong. I also think that, after so many days, the people in the village are either dead or have turned into zombies,” Liu Feng said while washing his face.
Liu Feng made a good point. It had been quite a few days, and there probably weren’t many survivors left. However, rescuing even a few would be a good deed.
“You’re right,” I said, rubbing my arm.
“But then…” Liu Feng paused, thinking.
“But what?” I asked eagerly.
“But I think you should want to go, because you have a strong sense of justice,” Liu Feng said, looking at me.
Perhaps Liu Feng was right. I did have a strong sense of justice, but if we went outside with so many women around, what if something unexpected happened?
Liu Yonglin came over, patted my shoulder, and motioned for me to go up to the rooftop. After exchanging a few words with Liu Feng, I followed Liu Yonglin up.
I looked around and asked, “Is something up? Why bring me here so early in the morning?”
Liu Yonglin pointed toward the opposite mountain. “See that? That mountain is full of rocks.”
I squinted but couldn’t see anything clearly. “How can you tell it’s all rocks over there?” I asked, curious.
Liu Yonglin walked over to a table and picked up a pair of binoculars. Ah, so that’s how! Where did these come from? Maybe he found them last night!
“Wow,” I exclaimed when Liu Yonglin handed me the binoculars. “How did you get these?”
“I found them here last night! This is a military camp, so of course, it has everything, including binoculars. There are probably lots of places we haven’t explored yet, maybe even with cannons!” Liu Yonglin said, handing me the binoculars.
He had a point. A military camp wouldn’t be short on equipment. I took the binoculars and looked at the mountain across from us. It was clear; the mountain was indeed covered with rocks.
I said, “The mountain is indeed covered with rocks, but what’s so special about that?”
Liu Yonglin explained, “Qian Jing mentioned there’s a cave there, and it’s located midway up a cliff. If you’re a person, you can use a rope to get in.”
So that’s what Liu Yonglin was trying to convey-humans could access it, but zombies couldn’t because their bodies are too rigid.
“But it’s so far away. How do we get there?” I asked.
“Exactly! That’s why I had you come over and take a look! Otherwise, why would I call you here?” Liu Yonglin replied, a bit exasperated.
“Let me think about it,” I said as I started heading downstairs. I really wanted to go, but there was so much to consider. “Maybe we should gather more information first,” I said halfway down.
“Whatever!”
“If we just head out like this, I won’t be at ease. Walking there will take at least a few hours,” I paused and said.
“I know! But if there’s a vehicle, would you be willing to go?” Liu Yonglin asked.
“What?” I was about to leave, but hearing about a vehicle made me run back up. “Are you serious?”
“Haha! How could such a large military camp not have any vehicles?” Liu Yonglin said with a smile.
This military camp is huge, but could there really be vehicles? If there were, why weren’t they taken away? The army left, and as for the guns, maybe there were simply too many to carry off in time.
Could there really be vehicles left behind? I really couldn’t believe it. How could they leave vehicles here?
“Why don’t we check and find out? I’ve already sent Liu Qi and Qian Jing to search. We’ll know soon,” Liu Yonglin said.
“I bet you’ve already found something!”
“How did you know?” Liu Yonglin asked.
“Come on, if you hadn’t found anything, would you be talking like this?” I replied, thinking Liu Yonglin must have found some clue or he wouldn’t be so confident.
“Haha, I really haven’t found anything yet! Let’s go have a look!”
With Liu Yonglin leading the way, we stumbled upon a large basement camouflaged with netting. There were tire marks on the road nearby-was this a garage?
After several twists and turns, we finally arrived. A secret base, perhaps? It couldn’t be, right? But it did seem that way, just like what’s shown on TV. I never thought I’d actually witness a secret base!
But is it really necessary to be so secretive? It’s just a garage!
“Is it dangerous?” I asked, a bit worried.
Since Liu Yonglin didn’t say anything, it seemed like it was fine, so I boldly followed him inside.
“Watch your step, don’t get blinded. There are lots of things inside!” Liu Yonglin warned.
This guy clearly knew there were vehicles in there but didn’t tell me. I stayed silent and continued to follow him in.
Liu Yonglin turned on the lights on the wall, and the previously dim basement suddenly lit up. But there was nothing there; he had been messing with me!
Frustrated, I snapped at Liu Yonglin, “What did you bring me here for? Just for this junk? Is that really necessary?”
“Just wait, you’ll see!” he said.
“See what?” I was getting impatient. I hadn’t eaten yet since I threw up all my food from last night.
Thinking about yesterday made me lose my appetite, feeling nauseous.
Seeing my discomfort, Liu Yonglin patted my shoulder and said, “Hungry, huh? Haha. Thinking about that zombie from yesterday! Haha!”
“Very funny! I bet you would have thrown up too. You didn’t eat anything yesterday, did you?” I retorted after catching my breath.
It seemed like no one ate yesterday. The rice from last night was still there! We left it because it shouldn’t be wasted. Rice is abundant in the military camp, but you never know-what would we eat if the rice ran out? Today, we also need to collect the corn from the fields. We shouldn’t waste so much.
Liu Yonglin opened a door, and from outside, I could see clearly what was inside-bags filled with something that looked like rice. Indeed, it was rice! Just thinking about rice and then finding some-wow, heavens, you’re really good to me.
“This is the rice storage, and over there are clothes. Here’s where the shoes are, and here are the underwear, haha,” Liu Yonglin remarked.
“Wow, this place is an armory!”
“This is fantastic! So many supplies here. I’m tempted to stay and never leave!”
“Hehe, there’s a lot, right? Qian Jing and the others are really gutsy. They even patrolled around here last night. We wouldn’t dare be so bold!”
“Oh my gosh!” I thought. I’ve stayed indoors for two days straight, sleeping through the nights. Maybe I should take a stroll tonight.
“Let’s not talk anymore. Let’s start taking these things out bit by bit. I’ll carry a bag of rice out, and in a few days, we’ll finish it, haha!”
Liu Yonglin hefted a bag of rice onto his back and headed outside. I grabbed about a dozen pieces of clothing, all camouflage uniforms. The shoes varied in sizes, so I just grabbed a few woven bags and filled them up. Liu Yonglin waited for me outside. Initially, I didn’t plan to take underwear, but I figured we should have them anyway-even though they’re for guys, the girls will need to change clothes frequently.
It was a bit heavy, but I was in high spirits. I hadn’t realized how we had gotten there earlier! Now, carrying this huge rice bag felt like such a long distance! I traded loads with Liu Yonglin, and he carried the clothes while I took the rice.
Earlier, when Liu Yonglin tricked me into coming here, it felt close, but now, lugging a big rice bag, it seemed so far. I had to stop frequently to rest, much to Liu Yonglin’s amusement. But a man must maintain his dignity, right?
Back in school, I never felt this way. Now, I felt like I had gotten heavier! Exhausted, I finally reached the large yard where we stayed. I dropped the rice onto the ground and flopped onto the rice bag, panting loudly and exclaiming, “I’m beat.”
Thankfully, Qimeng and Xueqi came to my aid, wiping my sweat, while Fei Fei just poked fun at me, along with Ye Xiang, who had disappeared earlier and now returned without offering to help! I really felt like taking them down a peg-they just loved to laugh at my expense!
Qimeng helped me up, and I glanced at Ye Xiang. “Did you find the car?” I asked.
“We found a basement, but we didn’t dare to go inside!” Ye Xiang replied with a grin.
“What’s the deal with that?” I inquired.
“Haha, why don’t you go check it out yourselves?” Ye Xiang joked. I wasn’t sure what secret he was hiding, but it must be something good!
He was just being secretive, and I decided not to press him for details. I knew that whatever it was, Ye Xiang was itching to tell me. So, I just smiled at him and didn’t ask, leaving him hanging.
Seeing that I wasn’t going to question him, Ye Xiang also kept quiet and began eating the leftover corn from yesterday. Watching him enjoy it so much, I couldn’t resist the urge to mess with him a little.
“Ye Xiang, how did you find the taste of that zombie yesterday?” I patted Ye Xiang’s shoulder as I asked.
At that moment, everyone spit out their corn, with Liu Feng being the most dramatic.
“Tiankuang, you’re dead meat for bringing that up again,” Ye Xiang exclaimed, rushing over to tussle with me, pinning me back on the rice bag.
“Brother, how could you do this! I haven’t even had breakfast yet, and now you mention that again. Are you trying to make us all sick?” Xueyang punched me on the back, scolding me.
