The Changing Phases - Chapter 26 - I Need a Boyfriend
The food they ordered had arrived, but Liu Yuxin was still troubled by what Zhao Junyang said about giving Xia Wanlu a ride. Her mind kept replaying the words Xia Wanlu had said before leaving. Her mood started to sink. Such an elegant and graceful woman-if I were Zhao Junyang, receiving sweet and tender calls with gentle reminders to rest, constantly having her caring presence around-how could I not be moved over time, even if I didn’t initially have feelings for her?
Besides, Xia Wanlu and Zhao Junyang have a tangled past. Who knows, Zhao Junyang’s feelings might be rekindled, and those old emotions could slowly resurface. Under Xia Wanlu’s tender offensive, Zhao Junyang’s emotional defenses might crumble and fall.
What do I have? What qualities do I possess that make him keep liking me? Right now, what they see as cute and somewhat amusing personality quirks will inevitably be washed away by the passage of time. We’re not compatible at all. I am just an ordinary person. How could I ever compete with a rich heiress?
Liu Yuxin felt a mixture of complex emotions, deeply unsettled. She kept her head down, eating the food in her bowl, still tangled in her thoughts.
“Liu Yuxin,” Zhao Junyang gently reminded, “why are you eating so fast? Be careful not to choke.”
Liu Yuxin continued eating with her head down. “I need to eat more so that no one can call me a vase.”
Yang Hongyi shrugged helplessly. “You still remember that, huh.”
Yang Hongyi glanced at Zhao Junyang and chuckled, “Liu Yuxin, if you don’t want to be called a vase, what if you end up becoming a flowerpot instead?”
Liu Yuxin put down her chopsticks and rolled her eyes at Yang Hongyi. “I just don’t get it, why does Director Yang always meddle in everything?”
Yang Hongyi laughed, “Because I want to see who he favors more. It looks like you won.”
Liu Yuxin glared at him but said nothing and continued eating.
Yang Hongyi chuckled again, “Knowing the answer gives me more motivation, doesn’t it?”
Liu Yuxin was even more puzzled, but Yang Hongyi knew himself well. “My brother knows that I always enjoy causing him a bit of trouble.”
Liu Yuxin had a sudden epiphany. “Oh! I get it. There’s a plot like this in a palace drama written by Jin. You two grew up together; on the surface, it looks like you share a deep brotherhood. But in reality, you’ve always been compared to each other by your family. Since he is slightly better than you, you hold a grudge and decide to make his life a mess-if you’re going down, he’s going down with you.”
Yang Hongyi burst into laughter. “You’re too blunt.”
Liu Yuxin said with certainty, “I’m just telling the truth. It’s a well-thought-out and profound judgment based on careful analysis.” She completely ignored Zhao Junyang’s presence as she chatted enthusiastically with Yang Hongyi. “Why don’t you try chasing Xia Wanlu instead?”
Yang Hongyi blinked his big eyes and said innocently, “I tried, but I didn’t succeed.”
“Come on, I really despise you.”
Yang Hongyi grinned, showing a row of white teeth. “Despise me all you want, but I think it would be more interesting if you, Liu Yuxin, were the one to chase. Right, bro?”
Zhao Junyang leaned lazily against his seat, chuckling softly. “Don’t mess around.”
Liu Yuxin couldn’t care less about their looks and their smugness, as if saying, ‘This woman is ours; who dares to compete?’ She stood up, grabbed her bag from the chair, and said, “You guys chat slowly, I’m heading back.”
“I’ll take you home,” Zhao Junyang said, which only irritated Liu Yuxin more. She glared at him fiercely. “Mr. Zhao, have you been out of the dating game for so long that your EQ dropped? Saying the same thing to two women isn’t interesting at all.”
“Yeah, let me take you home instead,” Yang Hongyi said with a mischievous grin.
“No need.” Liu Yuxin stood up straight, pouting. “Didn’t you just claim to have gentlemanly manners? Then you should respect a woman’s wishes.”
Without hesitation, Liu Yuxin walked out, leaving behind a graceful figure as she went outside and hailed a taxi to go home.
Unfortunately, when she got home, it was at an inopportune time. As soon as she entered, she saw two people cuddling on the sofa. Liu Yuxin forced a smile. “Sorry, I came back at the wrong time.”
Seeing that the pillows and blankets had been moved over to the sofa, Liu Yuxin couldn’t help but sigh. Wenhui sure acts quickly. Jin steadied herself and smirked, asking, “Liu Yuxin, how did your date go with your boyfriend today?”
“Boyfriend? I don’t have a boyfriend. I’m a proud single lady.” Liu Yuxin tossed her bag onto the sofa, which accidentally landed on Wenhui’s head. Clutching his head, Wenhui protested with a look of grievance, “Liu Yuxin, are you trying to kill me? Lucky your bag isn’t heavy, or I’d be a goner.”
Jin immediately jumped off the sofa, ran to her room, and returned with a notebook and pen. “Liu Yuxin, tell me all the details about your date. Who knows, I might get inspired right away!”
Liu Yuxin slung her arm over Jin’s shoulder. “I think you’ve gone crazy writing novels. Why don’t you just write about you and Wenhui? The tale of a ditsy female author and a pretty boy.”
Jin, shocked, gaped and rolled her eyes thoughtfully. “You might have a point. I feel my creative juices flowing already, haha!”
Liu Yuxin rolled her eyes at her and thought it was best to retreat to her room. She didn’t want to risk witnessing more lovey-dovey antics. Suddenly, thoughts of Zhao Junyang drifted back into her mind, pulling her musings far away again. Am I bewitched? Other people’s love is so passionate and reluctant to part, while mine is sneaky and ambiguous.
She opened her laptop, logged into QQ1, and began writing a journal entry.
