“Do you still want to stay here?”
A magnetic yet cold voice interrupted her reverie abruptly.
Gu Xiaoai froze, quickly standing up from the bed. Li Juefeng’s tall figure loomed at the stiff iron door. His short hair was slightly disheveled, his expression grim. His sharp, narrow eyes swept over her from head to toe, the eerie glint in them growing darker and more intense.
The next moment-
Bang!
Li Juefeng slammed his fist against the iron door.
She looked utterly miserable, like a homeless wanderer under a bridge. Her eyes were swollen and red, her delicate face devoid of any color. The pale yellow strapless dress she wore was stained with blood, and her high heels lay discarded on the floor.
She stood there trembling, unsure whether it was from fear or the cold.
The memory of the proud, elegant Young Lady in a pristine white princess dress from years ago was completely at odds with the woman before him now.
If he hadn’t answered her fifth call out of sheer frustration and overheard someone shouting about taking her to the detention room, he wouldn’t have even known that his woman had been locked up!
Excellent.
Gu Xiaoai had once again managed to deliver a stinging blow to his pride as a man.
Her injuries seemed to mock him, reminding him that he couldn’t even protect his own woman.
As Li Juefeng’s cold, stern expression bore down on her, Gu Xiaoai raised her hand again to wipe her face. She bent down to pick up her discarded high heels and walked toward him.
Standing before the towering man, Gu Xiaoai’s eyes held a trace of gratitude. “Did you come to get me?”
He was supposed to be the man she despised the most.
Yet, time and again, it was him who came to her rescue.
To say she wasn’t moved would be a lie.
“What else? Did I come here for tea?” Li Juefeng sneered, his tone dripping with sarcasm. “Gu Xiaoai, you look awful.”
“…”
He always had a way of draining every ounce of her fleeting gratitude.
He could never learn to speak kindly.
“Let’s go, then.” Gu Xiaoai forced a difficult smile, brushing past him and stepping out of the narrow corridor.
The overhead light flickered, and before she could steady herself, the world spun. In an instant, she found herself hoisted onto Li Juefeng’s shoulder. A nearby female officer widened her eyes in curiosity at the scene.
…
“Put me down.” Gu Xiaoai protested, dangling awkwardly over his shoulder, struggling in embarrassment. This man was just as arrogant and domineering in the police station as anywhere else.
“Move again, and I’ll assault you right here,” he said coldly, his tone devoid of emotion, making it impossible to tell if he was serious or joking.
“…”
This man’s primal instincts seemed ready to erupt at any time, anywhere.
