The Arrogant President's Cute Assistant - Chapter 161 - Her Child Is Not Mine
Ling Xiaonai looked unwell, his clothes still wet from the rain after she hurriedly helped him inside.
If this kept up, he would surely end up bedridden for ten days to half a month. By then, Pei Yuanyi would undoubtedly shift all the blame onto her.
Clearly, it was his choice to linger at her doorstep, and yet it had somehow turned into her fault. Ye Ranxi prepared to ignore him and leave, but after just a few steps, she found herself returning to the closet to fetch some clean clothes.
Approaching the bed, she began to help Ling Xiaonai out of his wet clothes while scolding him, “Who told you to stand in the rain like a big fool? You deserve this!”
After finally changing him into dry clothes, her small hands accidentally brushed against his skin, which felt burning hot, as if it were on fire.
Oh no, he seemed to have a fever. Ye Ranxi quickly grabbed the thermometer, took his temperature, and after five minutes, looked at the reading showing 39.8 degrees Celsius. She was utterly alarmed.
Although she was still angry with him and wished he would just disappear, she couldn’t help but worry that he might really be in trouble.
“I’ve already given Xiaonai some fever medicine, he’ll be fine.” Ye Ranxi’s phone buzzed; it was a message from Pei Yuanyi.
How could he still be this hot after taking medicine? Ye Ranxi placed her hand on his forehead, feeling the heat radiating from him.
She hurried to the bathroom, wet a clean towel, and placed it on his head. After going back and forth like this, he finally seemed to improve a bit, but she felt completely exhausted.
Ye Ranxi really couldn’t understand if she owed Ling Xiaonai something in a past life, which is why he was here tormenting her in this one…
By the time morning came, it seemed like his condition had finally improved a little, and Ye Ranxi, utterly drained, collapsed beside him and fell asleep.
When Ling Xiaonai woke up, he found a fluffy head resting against his chest, and the tension in his furrowed brows began to ease.
He could only remember standing at her door, soaking wet and feeling dazed; she had finally come out to look at him… and then he had passed out.
Now, his mind was still hazy. Ling Xiaonai didn’t dare to move, fearing he would wake Ye Ranxi. He knew she hadn’t fully forgiven him yet and dreaded that she would give him a frosty expression the moment she opened her eyes.
Feeling as though someone was watching him, Ye Ranxi blinked her eyes open and saw Ling Xiaonai awake, with a faint smile on his lips.
What’s so funny? Ye Ranxi felt angry just looking at him, especially since she was inexplicably resting against his chest… He must be having a good laugh at her expense now.
“Just go home if you’re fine,” she snapped, trying to get up, but Ling Xiaonai grabbed her wrist, leaving her standing there, staring at him in silence.
“Xiaoxi, are you still angry?” Ling Xiaonai’s voice lacked its usual vibrancy; it sounded somewhat hoarse.
Ye Ranxi forcefully shook off his hand. It would be a lie to say she wasn’t angry. “Why wouldn’t I be angry? Since you already have a child with Wen Nuan, why are you still bothering me? Do you find it amusing to see me being played by you?”
“When did I have a child with Wen Nuan?” Ling Xiaonai was completely confused. “Who told you that?”
“Wen Nuan told me herself. Can she be lying?” Ye Ranxi scoffed at him, “Anyway, don’t come looking for me again; it just bothers me.”
“Xiaoxi…” Ling Xiaonai tried to explain, but a wave of discomfort washed over him, and he coughed a few times.
As Ye Ranxi was about to walk out the door, he unexpectedly got out of bed and collapsed onto the carpet. The medication left him feeling weak all over, not even able to stand up.
Damn it! Ye Ranxi cursed under her breath and reluctantly went over to help him up. But just as she turned around, she saw Ling Xiaonai with a smile at the corner of his mouth. In that moment, she found it hard to say anything scolding him.
Ye Ranxi walked over and draped his arm over her shoulder, exerting all her strength to move him back to the bed. Sweat began to bead on her forehead as she got him settled.
“Xiaoxi, things aren’t as you think,” Ling Xiaonai said, seizing the moment while she rested on him. He wrapped his arms tightly around her, fearing that if he let go for even a second, she would leave him without looking back.
Ye Ranxi was already exhausted; she didn’t have the energy to struggle. After a few minutes, she finally managed to push herself up and tucked the blanket around Ling Xiaonai. “You should just sleep and rest well.”
No matter whether the matter regarding Wen Nuan was true or not, she felt emotionally drained. As long as Wen Nuan was in the picture, there would always be conflicts between them.
Even for revenge, she didn’t necessarily have to marry him. Ye Ranxi couldn’t understand why, after learning he was her enemy and that he had ruined her child, she could still consider marrying him. But now, knowing there was another woman by his side, the thought of marrying him had completely deserted her.
Wasn’t she marrying him for revenge? Or was it because she still had feelings for him? Was that why she felt so disappointed now that she knew he had fallen for someone else?
As Ye Ranxi realized this question, she suddenly felt quite sad. He had hurt her so much; how could she still love him?
Glancing at Ling Xiaonai, she noticed his pale face, tightly closed eyes, and furrowed brows, devoid of any vigor.
With a sigh, she walked to the kitchen to prepare some light porridge for him. When she entered the room, he was still fast asleep. She placed the porridge on the bedside table, gently closed the door, and stepped outside.
Suddenly, her phone buzzed. At first, she thought it was a call from Qian Yexue, but it turned out to be Zhao Zhihui.
“Uncle Zhao, is there something you need?”
“Xiaoxi, the day after tomorrow is the anniversary of your parents’ passing. Do you want to go see them?”
What Zhao Zhihui meant was to make Ye Ranxi remember her hatred forever so that their revenge plan could proceed smoothly.
Even though Ye Ranxi had regained her memory, she still couldn’t recall where her parents were buried or when they had passed away. Back then, she had only been a child, lost and homeless, struggling to survive. By the time she wanted to find her parents’ graves, she had already lost the chance.
“Uncle Zhao, do you remember where they are buried now?” Unable to control herself, a tear slipped from the corner of her eye.
“Yes, they are in your mother’s hometown.” Zhao Zhihui provided her with the address. “I helped take care of their arrangements back then.”
“Thank you, Uncle Zhao. If it weren’t for you, I might not have been able to see them at all.”
“It’s nothing. Your father and I were good friends. If he knew you were going to see him, he would be very happy.”
“Okay.” Ye Ranxi nodded, “I’ll make sure to arrange all my work tomorrow so I can take some time to visit my parents.”
“Xiaoxi, don’t be too sad. They know how much you’ve grown, and they would be very happy.”
“Mm, thank you, Uncle Zhao.”
“Don’t mention it, silly girl. You don’t need to thank me. I’ll hang up now.”
After ending the call, Ye Ranxi heard a crash from inside the room. She hurried back in to find Ling Xiaonai had broken the bowl she had set on the table earlier.
Was he so weak now that he didn’t even have the strength to eat porridge? Ye Ranxi sighed and went over to clean up the shards scattered on the floor.
“I’m sorry…” Ling Xiaonai rarely said those three words, and Ye Ranxi was momentarily taken aback upon hearing them.
“It’s okay. I’ll go make another bowl of porridge,” she replied.
After about ten minutes, she brought over a steaming bowl of porridge. Seeing Ling Xiaonai’s weak hands, she sighed and sat at the edge of the bed. “Alright, I suppose I’ll feed you.”
Like a mother feeding her child, Ye Ranxi scooped a spoonful of porridge, blew on it to cool it down, and then offered it to him. Ling Xiaonai obediently opened his mouth and drank it all down, a faint smile appearing on his face.
Her cooking used to be mediocre, but now the porridge tasted much better. Ling Xiaonai took several gulps, finding the flavor increasingly delightful as he gazed at her intently.
“Don’t get the wrong idea. I just don’t want you to starve here; I’d have to take responsibility for that,” Ye Ranxi quickly clarified, fearing he might misunderstand her intentions.
No matter how she felt, as long as she was still willing to pay attention to him, Ling Xiaonai felt a little less worried.
Before long, the bowl was empty.
After resting for a day, Ling Xiaonai’s strength had recovered quite a bit. When Ye Ranxi woke up the next morning, she realized she was lying in bed with Ling Xiaonai holding her close. Her small face was once again nestled against his chest. Their relationship looked so intimate, as if nothing had ever happened between them.
If only things really were that simple…
Last night, he had a high fever, and she had stayed by his side, changing the cold cloth on his forehead every half hour. Somehow, she had ended up sleeping in bed with him.
Feeling the small figure in his arms squirm slightly, Ling Xiaonai woke up. Seeing her angry expression first thing in the morning lifted his spirits unexpectedly. “Good morning.”
Last night, she had fallen asleep with her tiny mouth slightly open while resting her head on the edge of the bed. He was the one who had picked her up and carried her to the bed.
Seeing Ling Xiaonai, Ye Ranxi’s good mood dissipated. She wriggled out of his embrace and sat up. “You look like you’re better. You should go home.”
“Xiaoxi, do you still refuse to believe me? I can take Wen Nuan to the hospital for an examination. Even if she is really pregnant, that doesn’t mean the child is mine,” Ling Xiaonai rushed to explain, fearing she might misunderstand and leave with Han Shengyu.
Ye Ranxi glanced at him, noting the faint bruises on his face, remnants of the fight from that day.
“Are you telling the truth?” Ye Ranxi felt she had been deceived too many times already. She couldn’t bring herself to trust him now.
“Yes, you need to believe me.” Ling Xiaonai held her tightly, not letting go. “There’s really nothing between Wen Nuan and me.”
“Even if you don’t have feelings for her, she still has feelings for you. What if one day you discover her merits and regret being with me? It might be better for us to part ways sooner.”
Hearing her say that made Ling Xiaonai increasingly anxious. He pulled her into his arms, kissing her again and again, terrified she wouldn’t believe him and that she might leave him.
