The Arrogant President's Cute Assistant - Chapter 160 - Falling Sick from the Rain
“I…” Ye Ranxi was held in Han Shengyu’s embrace, too afraid to move, worried about accidentally touching his wounds.
Han Shengyu was like the sun, always giving a sense of warmth, and so was his embrace. On the other hand, Ling Xiaonai’s tenderness was only open to her; she always feared that one day she’d use up all that warmth, leaving only indifference behind.
How wonderful it would be to be with Han Shengyu… She wouldn’t have to think about anything, just be herself. But being with Ling Xiaonai always reminded her of many things from the past, which made her feel unhappy.
After a while, Han Shengyu finally let her go, cupping her face with deep affection as he asked, “Xiaoxi, can’t you be with me?”
If you’re with me, I’ll make you the happiest person in the world.
For a moment, Ye Ranxi really wanted to nod her head; she wanted to forget everything here and start anew. But she realized she couldn’t do it.
“I’m sorry, Shengyu-Ge…” Ye Ranxi turned her head awkwardly, leaving only the warmth from her face in his hands.
Han Shengyu knew that this might be the outcome, but he still felt a bit unwilling and tried anyway… As expected, it was exactly as he had thought.
“It’s okay,” Han Shengyu smiled, though there was a hint of bitterness in that smile.
Once the medication was done, the atmosphere became awkward. Ye Ranxi stood up, “If there’s nothing else, I’ll head back now.”
“I’ll walk you home.”
“No need.” Ye Ranxi walked over to the couch to grab her bag. “I can go back alone. You should focus on healing.”
Han Shengyu didn’t insist any further; he just nodded, “Okay, then be careful.”
As Ye Ranxi stepped out of Han Shengyu’s house, she finally felt a sense of relief.
His love for her was heavy, but she didn’t know how to reciprocate it.
Ye Ranxi hailed a taxi and returned home, only to find Ling Xiaonai standing by the door.
“Xiaoxi, you’re back,” Ling Xiaonai exclaimed as he spotted her exiting the taxi, rushing forward to embrace her. “Where have you been?”
Seeing Ling Xiaonai, Ye Ranxi felt no joy at all; instead, she found a sudden surge of strength and pushed him away forcefully. He was completely unprepared and stumbled back several steps.
“You should go back,” Ye Ranxi said as she walked past him without looking his way.
She took out her keys, opened the door, and walked inside, leaving Ling Xiaonai staring at her retreating figure.
“He’s been standing by the door for several hours already.” Qian Yexue didn’t know what had happened between them, but seeing Ling Xiaonai looking so pitiful made her heart ache a little.
“It’s fine, he’ll leave soon,” Ye Ranxi tossed her bag aside. “I’m going to take a shower.”
At midnight, Ye Ranxi was reading a book in her room when she suddenly heard the sound of rain tapping against the window. She turned her head and saw that it was indeed raining.
Looking down, she noticed that Ling Xiaonai was still standing there, his suit drenched, yet he remained motionless.
Qian Yexue knocked on her door and, seeing that Ye Ranxi was still focused on her book, sighed, “Xiaoxi, what exactly happened between you two?”
One was cold and indifferent, while the other was relentlessly pursuing her; Qian Yexue felt increasingly confused by these two.
“Nothing happened,” Ye Ranxi put down her book, unsure of what to say.
She had been telling herself that she had come back for revenge. If that were the case, shouldn’t she go down, hold him tightly, and pretend everything was fine again? But why couldn’t she do it…? Just thinking about what he had been through with Wen Nuan made her heart ache.
Could it be that she still couldn’t let him go?
Glancing out the window once more, she saw Ling Xiaonai still standing there, his gaze directed towards her.
An hour later, Ye Ranxi finally couldn’t resist. She shrugged on a coat and rushed downstairs. When Ling Xiaonai saw her coming down, a smile spread across his face, reminiscent of a happy child.
Having known him for so long, Ye Ranxi thought he had always looked handsome in her eyes; when had he ever looked this disheveled?
“Xiaoxi, have you forgiven me?” Ling Xiaonai looked at her with hopeful eyes, his wet hair plastered to his sides, and remnants of blood still staining his face from his injuries.
Ye Ranxi opened her umbrella and stood in front of him, simply saying a few words, “You should go back.”
It was pouring rain; hadn’t he considered his own safety?
“If you don’t forgive me, I won’t leave,” Ling Xiaonai insisted firmly.
But that did not sway Ye Ranxi at all. Instead, she felt like Ling Xiaonai was threatening her… Did he think that by doing this, everything that had happened with the child would just vanish?
“Fine, then just stay right here,” Ye Ranxi said coldly as she turned to leave. Just a few steps away, she heard the sound of something heavy hitting the ground.
In Ye Ranxi’s bedroom.
Pei Yuanyi checked the pulse of the person lying on the bed. “He’s fine; he probably won’t die. If he stands in this heavy rain for another half an hour, it won’t lead to anything serious-maybe just a two-week hospital stay,” he said nonchalantly.
“What are you talking about?” Qian Yexue tugged at Pei Yuanyi’s sleeve, signaling him to stop making such careless remarks.
Ye Ranxi was fully aware of what Pei Yuanyi was implying-he was blaming her. Perhaps it was because Ling Xiaonai had gotten injured, and now he had stood in the rain for so long, compounded by the fact that he hadn’t slept in days. Even a strong person couldn’t withstand that.
“If that’s the case, you should take him back. I didn’t force him to stay.” Ye Ranxi shot a cold glance at Ling Xiaonai lying on the bed, her words sharp as she spoke.
This time, Pei Yuanyi was genuinely angry; Ye Ranxi had never seen him lose his temper like this. “Ye Ranxi, he treats you so well. Doesn’t that move you at all?”
He treats her well? In what way? He had killed her child and then had a child with another woman!
“Calm down.” Qian Yexue hadn’t expected things to escalate like this. She could only stand by and hold Pei Yuanyi back to prevent him from getting too worked up.
“Moved? Wen Nuan already has his child; how am I supposed to feel that way?” Ye Ranxi hadn’t wanted to say it out loud, but once the words left her mouth, her voice couldn’t help but tremble.
“Things might not be as you think,” Pei Yuanyi responded, convinced that Ling Xiaonai truly cared for Ye Ranxi. How could he possibly have a child outside?
Pei Yuanyi chose to have faith in Ling Xiaonai, but Ye Ranxi could not. A pregnancy was such a significant matter; could Wen Nuan really be lying to her about it?
“Never mind, I don’t want to argue about this. If you want to take care of him, just take him back,” Ye Ranxi said, feeling increasingly irritated just by looking at him.
“I wouldn’t dare take him away,” Pei Yuanyi replied. This was the perfect opportunity for the two to reconcile; how could he be so foolish as to take him away? “Let Xiaonai rest here. I’ll leave now, so take good care of him.”
After saying that, Pei Yuanyi shouldered his medical bag, preparing to leave, and pulled Qian Yexue along with him.
“What are you doing? Can’t you see Xiaoxi is upset right now?” Qian Yexue snapped, feeling exasperated as he dragged her out. “And Xiaoxi definitely can’t handle this on her own.”
“How do you know she can’t handle it? In fact, Ling Xiaonai’s condition isn’t that serious; at most, he just has a fever. In a couple of days, when the fever breaks, he’ll be fine,” Pei Yuanyi reassured. He had already administered some medicine, and Ling Xiaonai should be back to his energetic self in no time. Still, letting Ye Ranxi worry a little seemed to serve a purpose.
Qian Yexue, knowing the truth, squeezed Pei Yuanyi’s hand tightly. “Are you trying to make her upset? How dare you lie to Xiaoxi!”
“Aren’t they currently knee-deep in misunderstandings? I’m just helping them reconcile,” Pei Yuanyi pulled Qian Yexue in closer. “If you come with me, it’ll be better. Otherwise, if you keep stirring things up, they’ll never have a chance to make up.”
Qian Yexue pushed him away. “I’m on Xiaoxi’s side. And if Ling Xiaonai really has a child with someone else, I won’t let him be with Xiaoxi.”
“I can guarantee that’s not the case.” Ye Ranxi had been gone for three years, but Ling Xiaonai hadn’t even glanced at those other women, which meant she was the only one in his heart. Now that Ye Ranxi was back, he was more afraid of losing her than he ever was; how could he possibly be with another woman?
“Really?” Qian Yexue seemed skeptical. “You and Ling Xiaonai are good friends, so of course, you’d stand by him.”
Pei Yuanyi didn’t bother to explain further; instead, he tapped her lightly on the head. “You silly girl! If Ling Xiaonai didn’t care about Xiaoxi, why on earth would he stand outside in the rain for so long? Is he just bored?”
That argument made sense… Given Ling Xiaonai’s character, if he really didn’t like someone, there was no way he would put himself through such discomfort just to stand outside.
Seeing Qian Yexue slowly warming up to his perspective, Pei Yuanyi wrapped an arm around her. “Alright, stop causing trouble here and just come back with me.”
It had been a long time since they’d shared the same bed… Pei Yuanyi felt a bit frustrated that he had a girlfriend but couldn’t even hold her at night. Now that the opportunity had finally come, he couldn’t let it slip away so easily.
Qian Yexue hesitated at first, but seeing his somewhat pitiful expression, she finally nodded. “Fine, I’ll go back with you.”
In Ye Ranxi’s bedroom, she glanced at Ling Xiaonai lying on the bed. She had intended to ask Qian Yexue to call Pei Yuanyi to take him away, but her phone started ringing before she could do so.
“Hello? Qian Yexue, why are you calling me at home?” Ye Ranxi answered.
Qian Yexue sounded a bit guilty. “Xiaoxi, I’m at Pei Yuanyi’s place right now… I might not come back for the next couple of days.”
He had basically whisked her away… Ye Ranxi felt frustrated but merely nodded in response. “Okay.”
“Xiaoxi, you’re not upset with me, are you?” Qian Yexue felt bad for abandoning Ye Ranxi.
“It’s fine. I won’t disturb you guys. Just enjoy yourselves,” Ye Ranxi replied coolly.
After hanging up the phone, she let out a deep sigh. If she had known better, she wouldn’t have called Pei Yuanyi to come over to help. Now…
