The Arrogant President's Cute Assistant - Chapter 154 - Reconciliation
Sure enough, as soon as Ye Ranxi arrived at the office, the first thing that caught her eye was a huge pile of documents that looked like a small mountain.
When Xiaojing saw that she had finally returned, she rushed over and hugged her like a long-lost relative, pouting, “Xiaoxi-Jie, you’re finally back! You have no idea how chaotic the entire studio has been without you.”
“Is it that exaggerated?” Ye Ranxi glanced at the stack of documents in front of her, realizing that this question seemed a bit redundant… wasn’t the fact right in front of her?
“Of course! Otherwise, just look at this pile of paperwork,” Xiaojing pointed at the documents, making Ye Ranxi’s head spin. She felt that even if she had three heads, she definitely wouldn’t finish this tonight…
“Did you all have the heart to make me do so much work?” Ye Ranxi sighed dramatically as she opened the files, realizing that many of them had already been taken care of and were just waiting for her signature.
That was a relief; otherwise, she might have really ended up working until tomorrow morning.
After looking through a few pages, Ye Ranxi suddenly remembered something, “By the way, we might be moving to work at Ling Corporation in a few days. Don’t worry, I’ve already spoken with Mr. Ling, and he said he would triple your current salaries.”
“Really? That’s awesome!” Xiaojing was ecstatic upon hearing the news, “So, Xiaoxi-Jie, are you going there too?”
Ye Ranxi nodded, “Of course! Look at this bunch of little bunnies, how could they manage without me?” She pointed at the mountainous pile of documents, giving Xiaojing a doubtful glance.
“That’s true.” Xiaojing scratched her head; after all, this studio was Ye Ranxi’s blood, sweat, and tears, and she was genuinely afraid of ruining what Ye Ranxi had built.
Accidentally noticing the diamond ring on Ye Ranxi’s finger, Xiaojing’s mouth dropped open in an “O” shape, “Xiaoxi-Jie, are you getting married?”
Ye Ranxi looked at the ring on her hand and replied, “Yes, I am getting married.”
“Is it with Mr. Ling from Ling Corporation?” Normally, Ye Ranxi had a good relationship with them; otherwise, Xiaojing wouldn’t dare gossip about her. Plus, Ye Ranxi really didn’t have a bossy demeanor; she treated them well, like a big sister.
Mr. Ling came in and out of her studio all the time, and now even Xiaojing knew about it. But they would find out sooner or later, so what difference did it make to tell them now?
“Yes, it’s him.”
Upon hearing that it was Ling Xiaonai, Xiaojing was practically glowing. “Xiaoxi-Jie, you’re really with that cool president? You two look so good together! Mr. Ling might seem tough, but he’s so gentle with you. One time, a colleague from our studio saw you with Mr. Ling and said his eyes softened like melted butter when he looks at you. If I could marry a handsome guy like that, I’d be waking up smiling from my dreams every night!”
She truly sounded like a young girl… Ye Ranxi used to think similarly. In her eyes, Ling Xiaonai seemed like an incomparably divine figure. She had worked so hard to become a designer, wanting to stand at the same level as him. She had achieved that now, but what did it matter?
“Xiaoxi-Jie, can I ask you a question?” Seeing a hint of sadness in her eyes, Xiaojing patted her shoulder and inquired.
“Go ahead and ask.”
Xiaojing hesitated, then asked cautiously, “Are you not very happy? You didn’t smile at all when we talked about Mr. Ling just now.”
Was it that obvious? Ye Ranxi sighed. This marriage was never what she had hoped for. She had always imagined marrying someone she loved, having a boy and a girl, and living a happy life. But now, it seemed like this marriage had nothing to do with love-it was just a means of revenge.
“Sometimes, marriage has nothing to do with love. What does it matter if you’re happy or not?”
After being with Ye Ranxi for so long, Xiaojing had never seen her so upset and didn’t dare to ask more. “Xiaoxi-Jie, as long as you feel happy, that’s what matters.”
“Alright, I’m fine. You’ll understand what I’m talking about in the future. Now, go on and get to work.”
“Okay.” Xiaojing grabbed the documents and left, leaving Ye Ranxi alone in the office to contemplate.
Finally, as closing time approached, Ye Ranxi had nearly finished her work and was ready to leave with her bag when she unexpectedly ran into Wen Nuan at the door.
Every time Wen Nuan appeared in front of her, it never seemed to be anything good. Ye Ranxi didn’t even look at her and tried to walk around her.
“Xiaoxi-Jie, I need to talk to you,” Wen Nuan said with a bright smile, as if they had always had a great relationship, with no cracks at all.
If only that were true. But Ye Ranxi was no longer the person she used to be. She clearly remembered everything Wen Nuan had done to her.
“Just say what you need to say; there’s no need to beat around the bush, especially since your Xiaonai-Ge isn’t here,” Ye Ranxi tossed out the remark, preparing to leave. Wen Nuan stepped forward, grabbing Ye Ranxi’s sleeve, “Xiaoxi-Jie, I truly need your help with something. Can you at least listen to me?”
It wasn’t appropriate for two people to be tugging at each other on the street, so Ye Ranxi glanced toward the nearby café. “Let’s go over there to talk.”
With so many people in the café, even if Wen Nuan wanted to cause a scene, it was unlikely she’d be able to do anything discreetly.
Inside the café.
“I’ll have a latte with two creamers. And also a cappuccino, with two creamers as well. Xiaoxi-Jie definitely likes sweet drinks,” Wen Nuan cheerfully handed the menu to the server and turned back to ask, “Do you like cappuccino, Xiaoxi-Jie?”
“Whatever,” Ye Ranxi replied, having no fondness for Wen Nuan. If things hadn’t happened before, they might still be good friends. But after what had transpired, she couldn’t shake her wariness toward Wen Nuan.
Soon, Wen Nuan’s expression shifted to one of sadness. “Xiaoxi-Jie, I realize now that I was being thoughtless back then. Can you forgive me?”
Ye Ranxi remained cold and unresponsive.
“It’s okay if you can’t forgive me. It’s all my fault for being so naïve before, which is why things turned out this way… Xiaoxi-Jie, I came here today because I really need your help,” Wen Nuan said, her demeanor becoming pitiful. Seeing her like this made Ye Ranxi think she wasn’t here to pick a fight but might actually need something serious.
Otherwise, given Wen Nuan’s personality, it would be impossible for her to come here, humbling herself like this.
“Just say what you need directly. If I can help, I will,” Ye Ranxi took a sip of her coffee. Indeed, it was sweet-just how she loved her coffee.
Wen Nuan’s face brightened with a smile, her eyes sparkling with delight. “That’s great! This USB drive is from my mom. She said it’s broken and asked me to help fix it. It probably contains a lot of important files, so I can only turn to you for help. You will be able to fix it, right?”
A small silver USB drive was placed in front of her. Fixing USB drives was something Ye Ranxi had some experience with; her own had broken a few times, and she had learned to repair them over time.
And, given that the USB drive certainly contained crucial information, it would be terrible if it fell into the wrong hands.
But… was Zhang Huiwen really so comfortable entrusting her with it?
“Does your mom know about this?”
Wen Nuan shook her head. “I haven’t told her yet. When she asked if I could fix it, I promised I would without really knowing how. If I can’t get it fixed, she’ll definitely laugh at me. With all the work Xiaonai-Ge has been busy with lately, I couldn’t bring myself to ask him for help, so I came to you instead.”
After saying that, Wen Nuan pouted in frustration, “If only I hadn’t lied back then! Now if I can’t fix it, I’ll just be the laughingstock…”
In front of her stood a mere girl. Wasn’t it just a USB drive? Couldn’t she help with something so simple?
Ye Ranxi couldn’t outright refuse her. She took the USB drive from Wen Nuan’s hand and nodded, “Alright, I’ll give it a try. But if I can’t fix it, don’t blame me.”
Seeing that Ye Ranxi had finally agreed to help, Wen Nuan’s face lit up with a big smile. “That would be amazing! Thank you, Xiaoxi-Jie. I know I was wrong before; I really just liked Xiaonai-Ge so much… Will you forgive me? I truly understand my mistake now.”
Ye Ranxi could somewhat empathize with Wen Nuan’s feelings. She had always been the precious one in the Ling Family, having fantasized for over two decades about marrying Ling Xiaonai. Now, suddenly, there was someone like Ye Ranxi in the picture. It must have been difficult for her to accept.
Perhaps Wen Nuan wasn’t as detestable as she thought. After a moment of hesitation, Ye Ranxi chose to believe her and nodded, “Alright, let’s pretend the past didn’t happen.”
“Xiaoxi-Jie, you really forgive me?” Wen Nuan exclaimed, her joy evident. “That’s great! That way, Xiaonai-Ge won’t be mad at me anymore. Thank you!”
“There’s no need to thank me.” Ye Ranxi put the USB drive away. “I happen to have a light workload these days; I’ll take it home and see if I can fix it. Just remember not to blame me if it doesn’t work.”
“Of course not! I’m just happy you’re willing to help.” Wen Nuan took a sip of her coffee. “I’ll ask for it back in a few days, okay, Xiaoxi-Jie?”
Hearing Wen Nuan call her “Xiaoxi-Jie” made Ye Ranxi’s heart soften, and she finally smiled at her. “Sure, I’ll call you when I’m done.”
“Then I’ll treat you to this meal! Let’s continue to get along like we are now, okay?”
“Mm.” Ye Ranxi nodded. Because of Wen Nuan, her mood had improved significantly today. They chatted about everyday life until it was nearly dark, and only then did Ye Ranxi head home.
