The Arrogant President's Cute Assistant - Chapter 146 - His World
The small road he had just driven on was the one where the secret guards were lying in wait.
By now, it was likely that those men in black had already met their end at the hands of the secret guards.
Pei Yuanyi didn’t want Qian Yexue to know that, like Ye Ranxi, she lived in a very simple world; it was better for her not to be aware of these things.
Qian Yexue still believed that they had genuinely left their pursuers behind and asked worriedly, “What if they come back?”
“It’s fine, we’ll just call in a few bodyguards. Just carry on with your daily routine and forget about what happened today,” Pei Yuanyi said slowly as he drove out of the cemetery. Only then did the two of them safely return to the city.
As Pei Yuanyi had suspected, Qian Yexue had always existed in a naive world. Observing Pei Yuanyi’s expression, it seemed that he had become accustomed to such dangers.
Having spent time with him, she hadn’t really noticed it until now; there was a small scar in the center of his brow.
Without realizing it, Qian Yexue’s hand brushed over his brow. It didn’t seem like a birthmark; it must have been a scar from an injury.
“How did you get that?” Qian Yexue asked curiously.
Pei Yuanyi smiled, seeming to treat such a minor injury as nothing serious. He replied lightly, “It’s nothing; just a gunshot wound from a few months ago.”
His eyebrows conveniently covered the scar, so it was no wonder Qian Yexue had never seen it before. It turned out he had just gotten injured recently.
A gunshot wound? How could that happen in such a place? Qian Yexue couldn’t even begin to imagine.
“It’s fine now, it doesn’t hurt anymore,” Pei Yuanyi took her hand, “And don’t forget? I graduated from a medical university in America. They wanted me to stay and teach, but I wasn’t interested.”
Qian Yexue rolled her eyes at him. The atmosphere had been rather heavy, but with his comment, she couldn’t help but adopt a scornful attitude, and her earlier worries vanished into thin air.
“Alright, we’ve reached the city now; we’ll be home soon. You should sleep for a bit,” Pei Yuanyi drove to Ye Ranxi’s house. Once they were home, it was as if nothing had ever happened.
Yet Qian Yexue kept thinking about the scar on Pei Yuanyi’s brow. It seemed like he understood her very well, but she realized she didn’t know anything about him.
As Pei Yuanyi prepared to head to his room, Qian Yexue stopped him and suddenly asked, “Do you have any other scars?”
With scars on his face, she couldn’t help but wonder just how many injuries he had endured.
Pei Yuanyi was a little surprised. He had never wanted to bring her into his world. His world was filled with darkness and danger, while she was so pure and beautiful; he couldn’t let that darkness tarnish her.
“Why the sudden question? Were you scared silly?” Pei Yuanyi ruffled her hair. “Alright, hurry up and get some sleep, or tomorrow you’ll be sporting dark circles under your eyes.”
With that, Pei Yuanyi went into his bedroom, leaving Qian Yexue standing in place.
Back in her room, Qian Yexue found it impossible to fall asleep. She took out her phone and tried to call Ye Ranxi, but the phone showed it was off.
Today, Qian Yexue had seen a world completely different from her own, and she was still somewhat shaken by it. If Pei Yuanyi hadn’t shown up back then, she didn’t know what might have happened to her.
Why were those people trying to kill him? How did they find this place? Wasn’t Pei Yuanyi’s situation usually quite dangerous? Qian Yexue’s mind was filled with a dozen questions, yet Pei Yuanyi refused to tell her anything. Even if she wanted to know, she simply couldn’t understand.
It was a sleepless night.
Ling Family.
After being tormented by Ling Xiaonai all day, Ye Ranxi’s body was covered in marks.
When the morning sunlight streamed in, Ye Ranxi lazily woke up. She felt utterly drained, as if she had been taken apart like a robot and reassembled. Her lower body was still so weak she could hardly move.
With great effort, she finally managed to sit up, but Ling Xiaonai’s large hand shot out and pulled her back into the bed.
His warmth built up against her back, and Ye Ranxi mustered all her strength to push him away.
“It’s all your fault!” Yesterday, all she had done was sleep. Everyone at the Ling Family must know what they had been up to in there!
Ling Xiaonai chuckled and playfully nudged her nose. “What’s wrong? Are you mad?”
Seeing her angry in the morning was a rare delight for Ling Xiaonai, and it improved his mood significantly.
Ye Ranxi huffed, “Of course I am. Just wait and see how I deal with you later.”
Through the pain in her body, she could vividly recall how wild last night had been. But when she caught sight of herself in the mirror, Ye Ranxi nearly broke down…
Her neck was covered in dark purple marks. Thankfully, the weather had turned a little cooler, so she could cover it up with a scarf; otherwise, she would surely be the subject of ridicule.
Ye Ranxi had just come out of the bathroom when she caught sight of Ling Xiaonai sitting on the sofa with a satisfied expression. She rolled her eyes at him, swearing that she wouldn’t pay any attention to this jerk today; otherwise, she definitely wouldn’t be able to get up tomorrow.
“Alright, don’t be mad. Let’s go down for breakfast, okay? I asked Aunt Lan to make your favorite,” Ling Xiaonai said, hugging her to comfort her.
Aunt Lan? Ye Ranxi had not seen Aunt Lan in a long time, and she missed her cooking, especially the pudding; it was the best pudding she had ever eaten.
“Really? If you’re lying to me, I won’t talk to you!” Ye Ranxi quickly changed her clothes and hurriedly pulled him downstairs.
Sure enough, as soon as they reached the ground floor, Ye Ranxi spotted Aunt Lan. She happily ran over and exclaimed, “Aunt Lan, it’s been so long!”
Having been away for so many years, Aunt Lan seemed to have aged a bit.
“Xiaoxi, you’re back?” Aunt Lan was equally delighted to see her. She reached out to take Ye Ranxi’s hand, and tears began to fall.
“Aunt Lan, don’t cry! I’m back, aren’t I? I won’t leave again, okay?” Ye Ranxi hugged Aunt Lan tightly and smiled. Aunt Lan had truly treated her well, and she had felt a deep sense of reluctance when leaving.
In Aunt Lan’s heart, Ye Ranxi was already the hostess of the Ling Family. Wiping away her tears, she smiled and said to Ye Ranxi, “Alright, as long as you’re back. Xiaoxi, you look like you’ve lost a lot of weight. From now on, Aunt Lan will make you delicious food, and you need to eat well and get plump.”
“Mm-hmm, Aunt Lan! I’m so hungry; what delicious food did you make?” Ye Ranxi rubbed her belly, genuinely hungry.
Hearing this made Aunt Lan laugh through her tears. Although Ye Ranxi seemed more mature now, she still had the heart of a child, just like the little girl Aunt Lan remembered.
“Look, I made your favorite pudding! Come and eat!”
Upon seeing the pudding, Ye Ranxi was overjoyed. She immediately sat down at the dining table and began to eat.
In the meantime, Wen Nuan walked down and saw Ye Ranxi happily eating the pudding at the table. A fire of anger ignited in her heart.
This Ye Ranxi was competing with her for Ling Xiaonai, and now she was even stealing Aunt Lan’s affection. However, Wen Nuan was still firmly recalling Li Xiaoai’s words: the most important thing was to keep calm for now; there would be plenty of time to deal with Ye Ranxi later.
After finishing the pudding, Ye Ranxi wiped her mouth with satisfaction and excitedly hugged Aunt Lan again. “Aunt Lan, I’m so happy! Thank you!”
“It’s just some pudding, and you’re so happy. From now on, Aunt Lan will make it for you every day, okay?”
Ye Ranxi picked up on Aunt Lan’s implied meaning: she wanted her to stay by Ling Xiaonai’s side from now on.
Aunt Lan, I’m afraid I can’t promise you that… Ye Ranxi silently thought to herself before putting on a sweet smile. “Okay, but you have to make me pudding every day!”
Just then, Ling Jiang and Zhang Huiwen arrived at the dining table. It suddenly reminded Ye Ranxi that they were in the Ling Family home.
“Good morning, Auntie, Uncle.” As she saw them, Ye Ranxi’s smile quickly faded, and her hands felt a bit awkward.
Zhang Huiwen glanced at her and then sat down, treating her with the same indifference as before. However, Ling Jiang nodded and said, “No need to be polite; sit down and have breakfast.”
Ling Xiaonai pulled her to a seat at the table, just as Wen Nuan came running down from upstairs. “Uncle, Auntie, good morning! Did you sleep well last night?”
No wonder Wen Nuan was so favored by the Ling Family; she was like a warm, cuddly blanket, always charming the elders and being very filial. However, she was doing all this to gain the favor of Ling Xiaonai and the Ling Family.
When such filial behavior becomes a means to an end, it loses its meaning.
At the dining table, Wen Nuan chatted happily with the Ling Family and Zhang Huiwen, completely engaged in conversation. Ye Ranxi felt increasingly out of place, unable to insert herself into any discussions.
Ling Jiang glanced over in her direction and noticed that Ye Ranxi was sitting quietly with her head down. He shifted the topic directly to her. “Does your hand still hurt?”
Only then did Ye Ranxi realize Ling Jiang was speaking to her. She quickly raised her head, nodded, and then shook her head. “It’s much better now; there’s nothing to worry about.”
Even without looking up, Ye Ranxi could feel Wen Nuan’s icy gaze on her. Wen Nuan must really hate her right now. After all, she was someone who had been part of the Ling Family for over twenty years and was now standing up for her. Suddenly, Ye Ranxi felt a sense of relief and vindication.
