The Arrogant President's Cute Assistant - Chapter 145 - The Mysterious Man in Black
Pei Yuanyi came here to house-sit? Qian Yexue’s mind conjured up images of the two of them alone in a room, which felt unusually strange.
Qian Yexue cast him a disdainful glance. “Forget it, you should just go home. I can handle things here by myself.”
If he could go home, he would have done so long ago. The problem was that Ling Xiaonai had said he couldn’t leave Ye Ranxi’s house without his orders.
“I also want to go home, but I have to stay here until Xiaoxi gets back.”
“What?” Qian Yexue could hardly believe her ears. She immediately called Ye Ranxi. “Xiaoxi, where are you?”
Ye Ranxi lowered her voice on the other end of the call. “Yexue, I’m sorry, I’m at the Ling Family right now. I probably can’t spend New Year’s with you this year. But with Pei Yuanyi here, I feel assured.”
So, what Pei Yuanyi said was true… Qian Yexue felt like she could cry.
“Yexue, you’re not mad at me, are you? I’m having dinner with my uncle and aunt right now, so I can’t talk long.” With that, Ye Ranxi hurriedly hung up the phone.
Before Qian Yexue could say anything, the call had already ended.
No way, she couldn’t really be spending New Year’s Eve with Pei Yuanyi… Qian Yexue glanced at Pei Yuanyi in front of her and let out a deep sigh.
“Forget it.”
Half an hour later, Qian Yexue finally finished preparing the meal and brought the dishes out from the kitchen. Seeing Pei Yuanyi still sleeping on the sofa, she reluctantly went over to wake him up.
“Hey, wake up, it’s time to eat.”
She really didn’t know if Ye Ranxi brought someone over to keep her company or if she deliberately found someone to give her a headache. It was exhausting enough working at the company all day, and now she had to take care of Pei Yuanyi at home.
Pei Yuanyi slowly sat up.
The two of them sat at the dining table, and the atmosphere was rather awkward. Qian Yexue didn’t say anything; she just lowered her head and began to eat. Noticing that Pei Yuanyi was in a daze, she placed a piece of meat in his bowl. “Alright, eat up.”
Pei Yuanyi had always been alone, and very few people had ever cooked for him. Now, looking at the table full of dishes, he suddenly felt a bit excited.
He picked up a piece of meat and put it in his mouth, then nodded. “I didn’t expect you to be such a plain cook, but your cooking is actually pretty good.”
Was that a compliment? Qian Yexue found it a bit amusing; unusually, she didn’t refute him but instead placed another piece of meat in his bowl. “If it’s good, eat more.”
After dinner, Qian Yexue was washing the dishes in the kitchen while Pei Yuanyi sat on the sofa, lost in thought.
He glanced at Qian Yexue, busy in the kitchen, and suddenly felt a sense of home. After years of turmoil outside, all he really wanted was to live an ordinary life like everyone else.
In the past, he could provide a warm environment for the person he liked, but now, he found himself in danger every day. Being with him only meant suffering for her; there was no warmth at all.
Pei Yuanyi understood her feelings, but he truly couldn’t be with her. As long as she was happy, that was enough for him.
Later that night, after taking a shower, Qian Yexue lay in bed preparing to sleep. With Pei Yuanyi staying nearby, her heart raced, making her incredibly nervous. She hardly slept at all that entire night.
She admitted that having Pei Yuanyi there made it less boring, and she was a little happy… but why, even knowing they could never be together, did she keep thinking about him?
Forget it; she decided not to think too much and just go to sleep.
About half an hour later, Qian Yexue heard a sound of the door opening. It was just her and Pei Yuanyi in the house; who else could it be?
Where could he possibly be going at this late hour? Qian Yexue felt puzzled and irritated, but she didn’t know what to do, so she closed her eyes and tried to drift back to sleep.
In the middle of her sleep, Qian Yexue opened her eyes again, still feeling something was off. What if Pei Yuanyi ran into some danger? Since she couldn’t sleep anyway, she might as well follow him to see what was going on.
Qian Yexue got up, casually grabbed a piece of clothing from the wardrobe, and ran out after Pei Yuanyi.
Fortunately, Pei Yuanyi didn’t notice her. Qian Yexue drove and followed behind him, only to find he had arrived at a dark place. Squinting, she saw that it looked like a cemetery.
What was he doing here at this hour? The cemetery was surrounded by tall, ominous trees, creating a frightening atmosphere at night. Qian Yexue shivered; if it weren’t for Pei Yuanyi being ahead, she would have turned back long ago.
The road ahead was bumpy, making Qian Yexue a little apprehensive, and with it being so dark, she slowed down. As she passed over the rough patch, she noticed Pei Yuanyi’s car had disappeared.
No way! She hadn’t been this worried while following him, but now that Pei Yuanyi was gone, her fear intensified.
Had he gone back? Maybe he had. In that case, she might as well head back too; this place was truly eerie.
Before Qian Yexue’s car could even exit the cemetery, she spotted a number of vehicles ahead. Before she could react, a group of men in black surrounded her car.
Panic set in as Qian Yexue realized that these men did not look friendly at all, amplifying her fear.
“Who are you?” she shouted, locking her car door and refusing to let them inside.
The leader of the group pulled out a gun and shot at her car. Qian Yexue’s heart sank.
What kind of people are these? Why do they have guns?
She had never been so terrified in her life, and she had no idea where Pei Yuanyi had vanished to. If only he were here, at least she wouldn’t feel so scared.
“Get out of the car now, or I’ll shoot!” the man with the gun commanded.
From the look of things, they probably weren’t interested in killing her; otherwise, they would have done it already. Qian Yexue quickly dialed Ye Ranxi, stuffing her phone into her pocket, and reluctantly got out of the car.
“Who are you?” she stammered, her voice trembling from fear.
One of the men pointed at her and said, “This is Pei Yuanyi’s woman. If we capture her, we’ll definitely find Pei Yuanyi.”
Pei Yuanyi? Did these men have something to do with him? Confusion swirled in her mind, and before she could process it all, they had already grabbed her.
“Why are you taking me? I have nothing to do with Pei Yuanyi,” she protested, trying to protect herself.
The men closed in around her, eyeing her with amusement. “Boss, I saw this woman with Pei Yuanyi at his house just a while ago-there’s no mistaking it.”
Was this about Xiaoxi’s house? They had already been keeping an eye on her there…
Suddenly, lights flashed in the distance, and someone came running toward them. A thick fog rolled in, and before Qian Yexue could see who it was, she felt herself being pulled away.
It was Pei Yuanyi.
In that moment, Qian Yexue felt like she was in a movie-first surrounded by a group of men in black, then saved by Pei Yuanyi, the hero coming to her rescue.
In this open space, surrounded by trees and tombstones, the eerie sounds of animals howling at night filled the air. As Pei Yuanyi led her to the car, she felt a surge of courage. With him by her side, she knew she could face anything.
Once they were in the car, Pei Yuanyi noticed Qian Yexue smiling and playfully tapped her on the head. “Why aren’t you scared?”
After years in the criminal underworld, he had made plenty of enemies, and some of them had already set their sights on him while he was at Ye Ranxi’s house. To him, they were just a bunch of insignificant thugs. That’s why he deliberately went out to draw the attention of those men in black. However, he didn’t expect Qian Yexue to follow him.
“Why should I be scared? As long as you’re here, I know I’ll be fine,” Qian Yexue replied, her eyes shining with confidence. As long as she stayed close to him, he would surely protect her.
Seeing her fearless attitude made Pei Yuanyi smile unexpectedly.
“What are you laughing at?” Qian Yexue asked, confused.
“Nothing. I’ll take good care of you,” Pei Yuanyi said, ruffling her hair as he pressed the accelerator to the floor. The car shot forward.
Before Qian Yexue had time to react, they were speeding away at top speed. Compared to the pace she had maintained while chasing Pei Yuanyi, this was incredibly fast; there was no way she could keep up.
If she weren’t braced against the back seat, she might have doubted whether she was about to fly out of the car.
The men in black were still hot on their trail, and Pei Yuanyi increased their speed even further.
Qian Yexue shouted loudly, but she was too scared to open her eyes; the speed was just too much.
After a few minutes, the car suddenly came to a halt.
“Alright, we’re here,” Pei Yuanyi said, pulling up in a desolate area. He noticed that Qian Yexue had her eyes tightly shut, and a smile crept onto his face.
Finally, they had reached a safe zone. He glanced back and saw that no cars were following them anymore.
She had just claimed she wasn’t afraid, yet now she was clenching her eyes shut, hesitant to open them. Watching the array of expressions on her face, Pei Yuanyi’s mood lightened.
Slowly, Qian Yexue opened her eyes, still reeling from the adrenaline of the earlier moments.
“What happened to those men in black?” she asked.
“I lost them,” Pei Yuanyi replied casually, not revealing the full truth to her.
In reality, he had led those men to that spot because it was inconvenient to confront them near Ye Ranxi’s house. He had already sent several secret guards from the Secret Organization ahead of time, knowing that once he lured the thugs to this location, the rest would be handled by them.
