Taboo Mage - Chapter 213 - Confiscation of the Phone
Zhou Qifang continued without batting an eye, “Because your mother likes to scare people in the middle of the night. If you don’t confiscate her phone, I can’t guarantee that next time I won’t go to the sanatorium and kill your mother.”
“What kind of person are you?!” Xu Benzhang yelled into the phone.
“Keep an eye on your mother. If she dares to call on that phone again, I’ll make sure she can never be reborn!”
With that, Zhou Qifang hung up the phone, giving Xu Benzhang no chance to continue his shouting.
I watched as what seemed to be a troublesome issue was resolved so easily by Zhou Qifang’s words, and I couldn’t help but admire him, giving him a thumbs up.
What I didn’t expect was that in the afternoon, Xu Benzhang came knocking on my door in person.
Initially, I didn’t plan to see Xu Benzhang and had sent Lin Huan to send him away instead.
I never anticipated that Lin Huan wouldn’t be a match for Xu Benzhang and let him walk right into the room.
When he came in, I was lying on the sofa, watching a ridiculous harem drama with Lin Huan and Zhou Qifang. Xu Benzhang was dressed casually today.
As he entered, he was holding a large box of unknown contents. Once he stepped into the living room, he placed the box on the coffee table and smiled at me, saying, “Boss Gu, I’m really sorry. I didn’t know that phone number from this morning belonged to you. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have spoken like that.”
I scoffed, “Mr. Xu, I’ve already said everything I needed to say clearly on the phone. You didn’t need to come here in person.”
“Well, Boss Gu, I checked my mother’s call logs, and she did call your phone last night. I know she may have disturbed you, but considering your mother’s situation, I hope you won’t hold it against her.”
“I’m not that petty. Do you have any other business?” I didn’t want to get involved in Xu Benzhang’s family matters, and I didn’t have much fondness for him. I just hoped he would disappear from my sight soon.
Lin Huan saw my clear attitude and added, “Mr. Xu, our boss was frightened out of his wits by your old lady yesterday and needs to rest for a few days. Please don’t disturb him during this time.”
I gritted my teeth. That little brat was the one who got scared out of his wits! I am a master of life amulets!
Xu Benzhang rubbed his hands together, looking a bit embarrassed. He didn’t intend to leave, and we didn’t plan to engage with him further, while the three of us huddled around the TV, deeply engrossed in the drama.
“Hey, Boss, do you think the lead actress is pretty? I think she’s alright, pretty good-looking,” Lin Huan said, grinning as he pointed at the female lead on the screen.
I shook my head. “She’s not ugly, but she’s not exactly good-looking either. Her face is too big for her small body; she’s too thin and feels bony to the touch.”
“How about the one playing the Empress? What do you think, Boss Zhou?” Lin Huan, sensing that I wasn’t appreciating his taste, turned to Zhou Qifang instead.
Zhou Qifang shook his head. “She’s passable, I suppose; I’d call her a reasonable beauty.”
I raised an eyebrow at Zhou Qifang; it seemed we were all on the same page.
The four of us chatted happily, completely leaving Xu Benzhang out of the conversation. He sat there fidgeting, unsure of where to look.
Despite his discomfort, he was still a deputy director, having faced many challenging situations before. It was just that he was now struck by a problem that caused him unrest day and night, throwing him off balance this time.
If he could truly calm down and engage with us, I feared that in terms of strategy and cunning, we wouldn’t be able to match him.
After sitting on the sofa for what felt like nearly two hours without us acknowledging him, Xu Benzhang suddenly stood up, paced around the living room for a bit, and then with a thud, knelt down in front of me.
I raised an eyebrow; this scene felt familiar. Seeing Xu Benzhang there, crying and sobbing, I couldn’t help but think of Du Jun.
The seemingly handsome yet dark and ruthless man. The one who nearly caused my demise in the past. I would never forget him, but for some reason, I felt a surge of curiosity as to why seeing Xu Benzhang reminded me of Du Jun.
But then I recalled that their destinies were entangled. Du Jun was likely half-dead now, his essence being drained daily by the infant spirit.
Once the infant spirit drained all of his essence, Du Jun would become a living corpse, slowly aging and eventually fading away…
“Boss Gu! I know you must have a way! Please, save my mother! I’m begging you!”
Xu Benzhang’s face, now aged in an instant, was streaked with tears.
I took a deep breath and helped him to his feet. “You don’t need to kneel to me. You’re older than I am and of a higher status. Kneeling is actually shortening my life. You’re not begging me; you’re trying to harm me on purpose.”
“No… that’s not what I meant…”
“Alright, I know what you mean. But it’s not that I don’t want to help; the truth is, I really can’t. I only went to the sanatorium for a moment, and your mother already called to warn me. Just thinking about that call gives me chills. I genuinely lack the ability to assist you.”
My words were heartfelt, and Xu Benzhang looked at me with tears streaming down his face, unable to utter a word for a long time.
In the end, I asked Lin Huan to see him out. After a moment of deliberation, I decided to chase after him, handing him a piece of talisman paper. “If your mother bites you again, stick this talisman to her and wait for the nurses to come.”
With that, I turned back to the room while Xu Benzhang looked at me eagerly.
In the living room, Zhou Qifang was still watching the drama. When he saw me come in, he asked, “Did you send him off?”
I nodded. “That guy really has it rough. There are so many people in this society who abuse animals, yet they still live just fine. I believe Xu Benzhang didn’t mean to kill that dog. It’s just unfortunate that the dog he killed was so filled with resentment.”
Zhou Qifang nodded thoughtfully. “I was considering that the dog must have gone through something in life, which is why it has such strong resentment after death. This is indeed a matter we shouldn’t meddle in.”
I sighed and fell silent, staring at the television, my thoughts wandering to who knows where.
For several consecutive days, I didn’t see Xu Benzhang again, nor did he come looking for us. I thought that perhaps Xu Benzhang’s troubles had finally passed.
