Taboo Mage - Chapter 182 - Infant Spirit
I turned to take a look; it was pitch black, and there was nothing there.
Zhou Qifang had his right hand resting on his brow, glancing at the rockery before he turned back to me, “Someone really did die here, and they were wearing a cheongsam.”
I chuckled, “This place has been built for quite some time, and who knows how many people have passed through here. It’s hardly surprising if a few people have died.”
The few people sitting nearby looked at us in horror and quickly got up to move away.
I found it funny-didn’t they realize such a straightforward thing? It was just that no one had seen it, so they could pretend nothing had ever happened.
Just like the Village Chief’s son, or Li Mi’s family…
After sitting for a while, I grew bored and asked Zhou Qifang if he wanted to leave. He waved his hand and surprisingly said he wanted to stay a bit longer.
I was curious but didn’t want to ruin his mood. However, after half an hour, I understood why he insisted on sitting there.
Half an hour later, I was sitting on a bench in the corridor, while Zhou Qifang remained motionless at his spot, but next to him stood an uncle who looked to be around fifty.
The two were whispering to each other, and then Zhou Qifang pulled out a Buddha amulet from his pocket and handed it to the man, who quickly disappeared into the crowd.
It seemed that he had planned this outing with me all along!
As soon as the uncle left, Zhou Qifang stood up and said he wanted to go out for a late-night snack, heading toward the exit. I followed closely behind him and waited until there were few people around before asking if he had been prepared for this all along.
Zhou Qifang nodded, “I had planned to contact someone tomorrow, but since you said you wanted to go out today, let’s just sort everything out today.”
“So, that’s why you insisted on staying at the Summer Palace?” I raised an eyebrow and found a barbecue stall to sit down.
Zhou Qifang glanced at the menu and continued, “I’m not familiar with anywhere else besides the Summer Palace. Would you want me to go searching for other places?”
I nearly spat out my drink-it was the first time I had met someone so lazy yet bold about it.
When we returned to the hotel at night, I double-checked everything and then waited for news from Zhou Qifang’s contact.
The news came on the third day when I was standing at the hotel entrance, holding my phone and video chatting with the little fox.
The little fox was lying in Uncle Lin’s arms, pawing at his chest with its tiny paws, grinning at me.
I asked Uncle Lin why Jue Chi has been so indulgent with the little fox lately, even letting it stay at his place for such a long time.
Uncle Lin shook his head and explained that he had taken the little fox to Chan Guang Monastery recently, but Jue Chi wasn’t there. He left a note saying he needed to go on a long trip, so the little fox was temporarily entrusted to Uncle Lin’s care.
I squinted in suspicion, sensing a whiff of conspiracy from Uncle Lin’s words.
Before I could ask more, Zhou Qifang returned with the uncle from that night. I hurriedly ended the video call, preparing to deal with the immediate situation before heading back to see Jue Chi.
“Don’t worry, the Buddha amulet has reached Du Jun’s hands,” Zhou Qifang said as soon as he laid eyes on me.
I nodded, thought for a moment, and asked, “So when will it take effect?”
Zhou Qifang didn’t respond; instead, the uncle beside him spoke up, “Rest assured, Boss Gu. Within three days, Du Jun will definitely look for you.”
I raised an eyebrow. Three days… Considering how long I had already waited, I could afford a couple more days…
In fact, it didn’t even take three days. I had witnessed the power of Zhou Qifang’s Buddha amulet firsthand. Early the next morning, Lin Huan’s call came through on my phone.
“Boss! What on earth did you do? Du Jun is going crazy! As soon as he heard you didn’t die, he started looking for you everywhere!” Lin Huan shouted as soon as I picked up.
“What did you tell him?” I asked, sitting in the rattan chair on the hotel balcony, watching the crowd below with a smile.
“Boss… I didn’t say much, just that you went out and I didn’t know where…” Lin Huan stammered.
I nodded. “Then it’s fine. Don’t talk too much.”
After hanging up, I turned to look for Zhou Qifang, but he was nowhere to be found. He had been gone since early this morning.
Just then, the door opened, and Zhou Qifang returned to the room. “There’s news from Du Jun.”
“I know, he’s found Lin Huan and knows I’m not dead,” I replied coolly with a smirk.
“It seems he won’t be able to guess that you’re the one pulling the strings this time, especially since his lifeline is in your hands. He won’t dare to make any reckless moves.”
Zhou Qifang’s words echoed my thoughts; with his cowardly nature, he wouldn’t be foolish enough to act against me right now.
Du Jun was, after all, nothing more than a cowardly man!
Suddenly, I felt a wave of desolation wash over me. After being a yin-yang life amulet master for so long, this was the first time I had encountered an amulet that delayed me for such an extended period.
This time, no matter what, I had to settle both new and old scores once and for all!
Suddenly, Zhou Qifang’s phone rang. Although he had changed his number after returning to the country, he still kept his Thai number.
As I listened to the unfamiliar ringtone, I realized the call was coming through to Zhou Qifang’s Thai number.
Zhou Qifang took out his phone, glanced at the flashing name on the screen, and said, “It’s Du Jun.”
I narrowed my eyes, realizing that since he couldn’t find me, he had turned to Zhou Qifang instead.
Maybe he thought Zhou Qifang was his only hope for salvation, but unfortunately for him, it was Zhou Qifang who was truly set to take action against him this time!
“Hello? This is Taka,” Zhou Qifang said casually.
Du Jun must have said something, as Zhou Qifang lay back on the couch, relaxed, and laughed, “What are you saying? You’ve been cursed? But what does that have to do with me?”
“How much? A hundred thousand? Mr. Du, you really overestimate me… No, no, even three hundred thousand wouldn’t convince me to help.”
“Gu Qingshu, you think we’re rivals? Oh, do you mean that your curse was put on you by Gu Qingshu? I have no need to worry about my relationship with Gu Qingshu. Even if we weren’t on good terms, that doesn’t mean I’d help you just because of that.”
Listening to Zhou Qifang, I felt a wave of disgust wash over me.
It seemed that Du Jun had convinced himself that I was behind his suffering-and he wasn’t entirely wrong. After all, he had nearly killed me, so naturally, I would be seeking revenge!
What struck me as incredibly foolish, however, was that he had sought help from Zhou Qifang, unaware that Zhou Qifang was the one actually planning to take action against him.
