Supreme Rogue Play in Another World - Chapter 41 - The Death of Ouyang Jing
Ever since Run Tiancheng met Sun Hai, he knew that Sun Hai wouldn’t give up easily, and Ge Long would definitely not let things rest. Sometimes, he regretted not being ruthless enough; if he had killed Sun Hai and his men back then, no one would have found out. With so many henchmen guarding the entrance and four people dead in a hidden private room, even if Run Tiancheng were a suspect, there wouldn’t be enough evidence to charge him. He wouldn’t have had to live in constant fear, worried that something might happen to those around him.
He established a rule that anyone associated with the Tiancheng Gang should stay in the school dormitory whenever possible. For those who needed to commute, they were required to check in online for safety right after returning home.
But sometimes, no matter how cautious you are, things just happen.
That afternoon, Ouyang Jing received a sudden phone call saying her parents had sent her some packages from out of town, which she needed to pick up at the post office.
Run Tiancheng insisted on going with her, despite the fact that the post office was not far from the school, less than 500 meters actually. But still, he was uneasy.
Ouyang Jing persistently declined Run Tiancheng’s offer to accompany her. As they were at an impasse, Run Tiancheng received a call. A man’s voice on the other end asked, “Is this Mr. Run Tiancheng? I’m from your building’s property management office. There’s a fire in your building. Please return immediately to check for any potential damage.”
Run Tiancheng thought about the call for a while. The voice was unfamiliar, and it seemed odd that a fire would happen at his home at such a critical time. The credibility of that call seemed quite low.
Just then, Run Tiancheng’s class advisor walked in and said, “Oh, Run Tiancheng, I was just near your building and saw black smoke coming from it. A lot of fire trucks were there. You’d better go check it out; it looks like the unit below yours caught fire.”
Run Tiancheng’s mind was spinning. Was his home really on fire? It was his only property and a precious legacy left by his grandmother. Any damage would bring great shame upon him for failing to honor her memory!
“My building is on fire; I have to go back immediately to check it out. Wait here for me, and I’ll accompany you to the post office later,” Run Tiancheng quickly told Ouyang Jing as he jumped to his feet.
“What? Is it serious? I’ll go with you,” Ouyang Jing said anxiously.
“No need. The scene will be chaotic, and it might be dangerous if the fire is large. You should just stay here in class and don’t leave, understood?” he said, patting her head a few times before hurriedly leaving the classroom.
Building 13 on Caicun Road, part of the sugar factory residences, was Run Tiancheng’s home.
A large crowd had gathered downstairs as firefighters extended high-pressure hoses to extinguish the blaze. Several firefighters climbed ladders to rescue residents from the windows of the affected apartments.
“Excuse me, I’m a resident of this block. Do you know which floor caught fire?” Run Tiancheng asked upon arriving, noting that the fire seemed to have subsided.
“The fifth floor. I heard an elderly person lived there and fell asleep without turning off the stove, starting the fire. Which floor do you live on?” answered a firefighter managing the crowd.
“Seventh floor. Is everything okay there?” Run Tiancheng asked worriedly.
“Oh, the seventh floor? It’s fine. The only affected units are on either side and the sixth floor. Your floor sustained no damage. But as a routine procedure, once the fire is entirely out, you should check your place thoroughly for our logs,” the firefighter said politely, embodying the image of a public servant.
Run Tiancheng nodded and stood aside, waiting silently.
About half an hour later, the fire was completely extinguished. After inspecting his home and completing some paperwork for the firefighters, Run Tiancheng hurried back to school.
As he approached the school entrance, he noticed a crowd gathered about 200 meters down the road. It seemed something had happened. At that moment, an inexplicable sense of dread filled his heart, compelling him to go and see what was happening.
As Run Tiancheng drew nearer, his unease intensified-a feeling he had never experienced before. He overheard passersby saying there had been an accident and remarked on the tragedy of such a young life… His heart pounded, and he quickly pushed through the crowd.
There he saw it.
The scene he had hoped never to witness.
It was a unique sorrow mingled with intense pain.
Ouyang Jing lay with eyes closed in a pool of blood, clutching a small package stamped with the post office seal in her hand.
The vehicle involved in the accident was long gone, leaving Ouyang Jing lying there all alone.
“I will protect you for a lifetime, even if it costs me my life…”
“You don’t have to say anything. From today onward, I am truly your woman…”
Scenes of moments spent with Ouyang Jing flooded Run Tiancheng’s mind. Every conversation, every vow, every whispered word of affection echoed around him.
“No!!!!!!”
Tears streaming down his face, Run Tiancheng knelt beside Ouyang Jing, screaming toward the heavens.
“Where’s the ambulance?” he cried, clutching Ouyang Jing’s frail, pale body tightly, questioning the bystanders around him.
“It’s already been called, but I’m afraid it’s too late. She stopped breathing over five minutes ago,” a middle-aged man in a white coat said, shaking his head in regret.
“No, no, it’s not possible! She can still be saved, she has to be!” Run Tiancheng shouted hysterically, holding Ouyang Jing as the sound of the ambulance siren approached.
At the central hospital, the light above the emergency room door went out.
A doctor emerged with a grim expression. “Who is the patient’s family?”
“I’m her boyfriend. How is she?” Run Tiancheng rushed forward.
“I’m sorry, we did our best…” the doctor sighed, shaking his head.
“No, that can’t be true. You’re lying, you’re lying!” Run Tiancheng couldn’t accept the reality thrust upon him. Members of the Tiancheng Gang, having heard the news, started to arrive. Seeing Run Tiancheng’s anguished shouts from a distance, they all bowed their heads in sorrow. Ouyang Jing had become like family to them, a true Boss Lady in their hearts.
“The patient had massive intracranial bleeding; there was nothing more we could do,” the doctor said in consolation. “Please take care of yourself in this time of grief.”
Run Tiancheng staggered back, shaking his head, fists clenched tightly. He suddenly punched the hospital wall with such force that the entire reinforced concrete wall cracked, startling the doctor into sitting down on the floor.
“Boss… you…” Third Zhuang stepped forward and grabbed Run Tiancheng’s arm to prevent further damage to the hospital’s public property.
“Let me go, I’m fine…” Run Tiancheng said, his eyes dull and empty, as he walked alone toward the exit. “Don’t follow me. I need some time alone.”
No one dared to go against his wishes or could stop him. They watched as Run Tiancheng’s figure retreated into the distance, eyes filled with concern and sympathy.
The sky opened up with heavy rain as Run Tiancheng slowly walked away, getting farther and farther into the downpour…
