Supernatural Brokers Rampaging in the Human World - Chapter 162 - Origins (Part 1)
The Yuan Family originally consisted of the eldest son, Yuan Junyuan, the second son, Yuan Junming, and the youngest daughter, Yuan Yan. The three siblings had always been close. Yuan Junyuan was originally the unquestionable heir to the family, but when the siblings were in their teens, they discovered that their father, Yuan Xinde, had an illegitimate son outside the family-and he even intended to formally acknowledge this child and bring him into the Yuan Family.
This revelation caused a deep rift between Yuan Xinde and the siblings. Later, when Yuan Xinde handed over one of the Yuan Family’s companies to his illegitimate son to manage, tensions between them reached a breaking point.
By then, Yuan Junyuan had already come of age but was still no match for the experienced and established Yuan Xinde. However, if they didn’t resist, the three siblings could very well end up destitute. Yuan Junyuan had no choice but to shoulder the responsibility.
Yuan Xinde’s illegitimate son was also an ambitious individual. He made several overt and covert moves against the Yuan siblings and somehow seemed to have cast a spell over Yuan Xinde, who never intervened. If they didn’t fight back, how could it be any different from waiting for their demise?
What exactly Yuan Junyuan did, neither Yuan Junming nor Yuan Yan ever discovered in detail. All they knew was that he seemed to have sought someone’s help. Not long after that, the illegitimate son suddenly died under mysterious circumstances, and Yuan Junyuan disappeared without a trace.
Around the same time, Yuan Junming’s fortunes seemed to improve almost overnight. It was as if everyone suddenly rallied behind him. After the disappearance of his elder brother, Yuan Junming had no choice but to take over the Yuan Family.
Both Yuan Junming and Yuan Yan couldn’t shake the feeling that what happened to their elder brother wasn’t as simple as it appeared. It was as if he had made some sort of deal, sacrificing himself in exchange for something. But despite their suspicions, they had no concrete leads to follow, even to this day.
Now, standing before them was Lin Zhaonuan, who bore an uncanny resemblance to their long-lost elder brother. What was initially just a suspicion had now grown stronger-they couldn’t ignore the striking resemblance, which left them feeling uncertain and hesitant.
First of all, Lin Zhaonuan had been formidable even when she was just an orphan, and now that she was the matron of the Stuart Family, a colossal power that even the Yuan Family couldn’t afford to offend, approaching her was even more daunting.
Secondly, Yuan Yan already had considerable personal conflicts with Lin Zhaonuan. To act rashly would surely only make things worse.
Lastly, when Lin Zhaonuan had no social standing, they hadn’t extended any olive branches. Now that she was married to Chu Chenxiao, suddenly probing into her connection to their elder brother might easily come across as opportunistic or sycophantic in others’ eyes.
After confirming things with Yuan Yan, Yuan Junming and his sister deliberated for what felt like forever, torn between speaking up or staying silent. Even though Lin Zhaonuan likely wouldn’t care in the slightest about being the Yuan Family eldest son’s daughter, they couldn’t ignore the possibility that she was their only link to their elder brother.
Their brother had sacrificed himself for them-how could they turn a blind eye to his flesh and blood? No matter what, they had to try.
When Su Yang received a message from Yuan Junming, she was genuinely surprised. In her eyes, there wasn’t much of a connection between them. What could be so important that Yuan Junming would lower himself enough to personally invite her for a “conversation”? Was it possible that he was trying to use her to broker some sort of deal with the Stuart Family?
Unsure of Yuan Family’s intentions, Su Yang hesitated to go. She worried it would end up being a repeat of what happened with the Mu Family. Although she was now more powerful than nearly anyone else in the mortal world, the memory of that incident made her cautious.
Su Yang decided to tell Chen Zhao about the situation. Whether she chose to go or not, he would find out eventually, and if she didn’t consult him now, this stubborn old man would surely hound her about it later.
Chen Zhao, for his part, wasn’t entirely sure what the Yuan Family wanted either. Aside from a few minor collaborations, there really wasn’t much connection between their two sides. “Do you want to meet them?” he asked.
They were back in Rhein now, and Yuan Junming’s ostensible plan was to visit Rhein in person to meet her. Such a gesture of sincerity didn’t seem like it was related to business-it felt more like there was something urgent and personal that he wanted Su Yang to confirm.
Su Yang frowned, rereading Yuan Junming’s message. His tone was exceptionally polite, to the point of seeming nervous. She couldn’t fathom what could compel a clan leader from one of the world’s most prominent families to address her this way.
“Let’s meet,” Su Yang finally decided after some thought. “It might actually be something important.” She sent her reply. Yuan Junming quickly responded, explaining that he was already in Rhein and available to visit if it was convenient.
-It really did seem like an issue of great urgency, Su Yang thought to herself before agreeing to their request.
An hour later, Yuan Junming arrived at the Stuart Family estate, accompanied by Yuan Yan. While Yuan Junming was simply nervous, Yuan Yan looked visibly uneasy. After all, her husband’s illegitimate daughter had been Lin Zhaonuan’s close friend and had even sacrificed her life to save Yuan Yan’s son. No matter how she thought about it, this tangled web of relationships was nothing short of a headache.
Su Yang didn’t seem particularly concerned about Yuan Yan’s presence. After the butler served tea, they all sat down in the reception room.
Since the request had specifically been to meet with Su Yang, Chen Zhao was not present. Noticing this, the two visitors visibly relaxed. This small reaction only heightened Su Yang’s curiosity about what they wanted to discuss.
Yuan Junming was indeed nervous. Perhaps because of the groundwork laid in his own mind, he now couldn’t help but feel that Lin Zhaonuan strongly resembled their missing eldest brother, Yuan Junyuan.
Yuan Junyuan had inherited more of their mother’s features, and as a result, didn’t closely resemble his siblings. This was why, when they had first met Lin Zhaonuan, they only felt a vague sense of familiarity without being able to pinpoint why. But seeing her again now, Yuan Junming couldn’t help but feel that everything about her seemed to bear a striking resemblance to his brother. Especially those distinctive almond-shaped eyes-they were practically identical to Yuan Junyuan’s.
“Ms. Lin,” Yuan Junming began carefully. “Let me be direct. I… I believe you may look very much like my missing elder brother, Yuan Junyuan. I don’t know if you’ve ever heard about him, but I did have an older brother who disappeared many years ago. Seeing such a remarkable resemblance in you, I can’t help but feel…” His words faltered-he was being extremely cautious in choosing them.
Although his explanation was somewhat muddled, Su Yang immediately understood his implication. Her eyes widened slightly in surprise. Was Yuan Junming suggesting that she might be Yuan Junyuan’s daughter?! While others might know her as an orphan, she herself was aware that she did have parents.
“My apologies for any presumption,” Yuan Junming continued after taking a deep breath. “I’ve heard you were raised as an orphan… Would you consider comparing your DNA with my brother’s? We’ve prepared his DNA data.”
Stunned as she was, Su Yang knew a DNA test wasn’t a particularly complicated request-it only required a single strand of her hair. However, she was certain she had parents, and if that was the case, Yuan Junming would inevitably leave disappointed.
Noticing Su Yang’s hesitation, Yuan Yan retrieved an image of Yuan Junyuan from her terminal and handed it to her. “Ms. Lin, here’s a photo of my elder brother. Perhaps it might help.”
Su Yang glanced at the image and was momentarily startled. The man in the photo did, in fact, bear a resemblance to her! She had taken after neither her mother, Mu Linlang, nor had any clear memory of her father, Zhou Yun. But now, seeing Yuan Junyuan’s face, she couldn’t help but feel they truly shared some resemblance.
Seeing Su Yang’s expression shift, Yuan Junming seized the opportunity. “If you’re willing, Ms. Lin, we could arrange for the DNA test immediately. We’ve already brought my brother’s records with us. You can even ask Mr. Chu to select a hospital of your preference…”
Su Yang frowned slightly and nodded. “Understood. Please excuse me for a moment.”
Chen Zhao was in the study, dealing with a mountain of work. He’d always preferred handling matters from the estate, only venturing to the company when absolutely necessary-usually to deal with issues his subordinates couldn’t resolve on their own.
“What’s wrong?” Chen Zhao looked up from the stack of documents when he heard the familiar sound of Su Yang’s footsteps. Both his father and Edwin had proven completely unreliable when it came to administrative matters, only attending to emergencies and leaving everything else to pile up until Chen Zhao’s marriage. Once the ceremony was over, the entire backlog was promptly handed over to him.
Su Yang quickly summarized everything Yuan Junming had brought up, ending with her doubts. “But I clearly have parents… And my mother was married to Zhou Yun. How could I have any connection with Yuan Junyuan? Besides, Yuan Junyuan was in Xu City, while my mother was raising me in Jing City…”
Chen Zhao chuckled softly and reached out to ruffle her hair in reassurance. “You’re overthinking it. Whether you’re connected or not, just let them run the test and find out.”
Su Yang sighed. “But what if it turns out that I am…”
“Don’t worry. I’m here,” Chen Zhao said gently, pulling her into an embrace as they made their way downstairs together.
