Supernatural Brokers Rampaging in the Human World - Chapter 158 - The Proposal
It didn’t take long for everyone to be proven wrong about their guesses, as Adonis Stuart’s social media account, dormant for five years, suddenly sprung back to life with a new photo of him and Lin Zhaonuan.
Five years had passed, and yet their appearances seemed unchanged-or perhaps, even more refined. People couldn’t help but marvel at how the gods always seemed to favor beautiful people.
“Found a planet to clear my mind.” -This was the caption Chen Zhao used for the photo, which featured a backdrop of white mandala flowers. In reality, the photo had been taken in the Netherworld, but it served its purpose in fooling the public.
Even after five years of inactivity, there were still fans quick enough to grab the top comments, flooding it with replies claiming that no one believed such a lame excuse. If anything, they joked, they’d be more convinced if he admitted it was the Netherworld.
Su Yang read the comments and chuckled, her eyes lighting up. “Some people are pretty sharp, aren’t they?”
“Just a case of a blind cat stumbling onto a dead mouse,” Chen Zhao snorted, visibly annoyed by the goofy netizens stealing his fiancée’s attention. “Nuan, isn’t it about time we got married?”
Su Yang froze. She didn’t even register why he was suddenly calling her “Nuan” because she was too distracted by the word “married.” Chen Zhao, noticing she had finally stopped scrolling through her Terminal, felt a wave of satisfaction.
“Why are you spacing out? You don’t want to?” However, her stunned reaction still filled him with an unreasonable amount of displeasure.
“No, it’s not that… I just, I just think it’s kind of sudden.” Su Yang scratched her head, knowing all too well how petty this man could be. If she outright rejected the idea, there was no telling how he might retaliate.
“Then it’s a yes,” Chen Zhao said with a soft laugh, using his trademark bandit logic to maneuver her into agreeing to the marriage.
“Hey!” Su Yang glared at him like an annoyed kitten, her expression so endearing that it made his heart itch.
“Nuan, I’ve already given you five years to think about it. Look, I’m already thirty-three. Most people my age already have kids by now,” Chen Zhao sighed plaintively, doing his best to sound aggrieved.
“That’s not true! Look at Edwin-he’s thirty-five and doesn’t even have a partner yet!” Su Yang protested a bit too loudly. At that very moment, Edwin, who had just stepped into the garden: …Excuse me? What did I do to deserve this?!
However, he quickly caught on to the situation. “Wait… You two are finally tying the knot?” he asked, his tone clearly brimming with a can’t-wait-to-watch-the-drama vibe.
Chen Zhao glanced at Edwin, then at Su Yang, and the meaning in his eyes was unmistakable. Su Yang glared at Edwin and huffed, “Why are you so concerned about us? Maybe you should focus on when you’ll finally get yourself a girlfriend.”
Edwin, ever the easygoing type, wasn’t offended. He grinned cheekily and tried to smooth things over. “Hey, the head of the family hasn’t gotten married yet. Why should I be in a hurry?”
“Alan’s two years younger than you!” Su Yang retorted in exasperation.
“He outranks me, though,” Edwin said with shameless nonchalance, earning an eye-roll from Su Yang, who decided she didn’t want to waste her breath arguing with him any further.
Chen Zhao pulled Su Yang closer to him and whispered, “Nuan, there are still quite a few things I haven’t settled with you yet. But if you marry me, the change in your status might convince me to just let it all slide.”
Edwin had no idea what “settling scores” referred to, but Su Yang knew all too well. It must be about the events of their past life. She pressed her lips together, refusing to respond. Edwin, watching the silent exchange between the two that felt like some secret code, suddenly found himself feeling like a cat pawing at an unreachable mystery. But it was clear they weren’t about to clue him in.
Realizing he was unlikely to get any answers, Edwin let out a long sigh, resigning himself to the fact that the couple was blatantly flaunting their intimacy in front of him. He, a lone bachelor, stood no chance. Seeing no reason to stay, he promptly turned on his heel and left.
With the “third wheel” finally gone, Chen Zhao took out a small box from who-knows-where, clearly something he had prepared for a long time. What was inside wasn’t hard to guess, yet Su Yang’s heart still couldn’t help but beat faster. She instinctively took a step back, as if startled, but Chen Zhao wasn’t about to let her hesitate any longer.
He opened the box and dropped to one knee. Inside was a deep blue gemstone ring, unlike any material found on Earth. The gem sparkled with tiny specks of light, like distant stars, creating an ethereal and dreamlike effect.
The ring’s design featured two interwoven galaxies cradling the gemstone in the center. It was clearly a custom piece, and Su Yang couldn’t help but wonder just how long Chen Zhao had been planning this.
“Nuan, marry me,” Chen Zhao said, his tone calm, though his gaze was impossibly gentle. “Just like I’ve promised, I want to give you the entire universe, the stars, and the galaxies. The three realms, the heavens and their gods-they’ll all be part of my dowry for you.”
Though his words sounded fanciful, almost impossible, Su Yang knew this man might very well follow through.
Even though this was a moment she had once imagined before-a moment she always knew would eventually come-Su Yang couldn’t stop the tears from rolling down her cheeks.
She was always crying lately, so unlike the decisive and ruthless Realm Lord of the netherworld she had been in her previous life. She didn’t know what kind of spell this man had cast on her. Silently, she nodded her head to indicate her agreement. She couldn’t bring herself to speak, afraid her voice would come out in a sob.
Chen Zhao slid the ring onto her middle finger. Their engagement years ago had used a power-signifying ring provided by their families, but this proposal ring had been custom-made by him years earlier. The gemstone, he knew, came from a cosmic origin stone that had taken millions of years to form and even contained an entire planet within it.
But that particular detail-that he had gifted her a planet-was something he decided to save for later. For now, this moment belonged to just the two of them.
The proposal ended quietly in the Stuart Family castle’s back garden, with only the two of them present. Not a single soul had gotten wind of what had happened, and Edwin, who had left earlier to avoid their “displays of affection,” happened to miss what was probably the one and only time-in this lifetime or the previous-Chen Zhao would ever lower himself to one knee.
By the time Edwin finally found out, regret nearly swallowed him whole.
Chen Zhao, never one to keep things low-key in the past and certainly not now, wasted no time notifying his parents that they could start wedding preparations. Ignoring their excited shouting and fussing, he turned his focus to Su Yang, beginning to seriously inquire about her preferences.
“What kind of wedding do you want-Chinese or Western? Or maybe… one of each?” Though he posed it as a question, his tone quickly revealed that he thought the idea of hosting two ceremonies was simply brilliant.
Su Yang’s lips twitched at the suggestion, but after giving it a moment’s thought, she realized it might actually make sense. As the clan leader of the Stuart Family, their wedding was bound to be a global event, so a Western-style ceremony was almost obligatory. But given their shared past life, adorning a traditional Chinese bridal outfit with a phoenix coronet and red cape seemed equally irreplaceable.
If this had been their past life, their wedding would have surely made waves in all of the three realms. It would have been a grandiose affair, far beyond the traditional “ten-mile red wedding chests” procession. It might have even involved what Chen Zhao had once pledged-taking the three realms as his dowry. Yet in that lifetime, they hadn’t even managed to break through that fragile window of understanding between them.
As though he could sense her thoughts, Chen Zhao chuckled softly and cupped her face with both hands. “Nuan, you see, because of you, we lost an entire lifetime.”
Su Yang knew the man wasn’t exactly wrong, but she certainly didn’t want to let him get all smug about it. She shot him a glare and retorted, “Oh? So now you’re blaming me, huh? Is this you already starting to complain before we’ve even gotten married? Fine, then this wedding-”
Her words were cut short by Chen Zhao’s helpless sigh. He looked at the girl in his arms, quite unsure whether he wanted to laugh or just admit defeat. At the end of the day, he knew she had him completely wrapped around her finger.
Su Yang turned her head away, unable to hold back her laughter, but the small-minded man quickly took revenge by pulling her into a kiss.
Meanwhile, on the other end of the Terminal, Cecilia was practically hopping with frustration. “What is wrong with that kid? How does he drop something like this on us and then just go radio silent?!” She had so many questions about the proposal and desperately wanted every single detail.
But despite the speculation and impatience from others, Chen Zhao didn’t bother replying to their messages until a few hours later. By that time, he was already deep in discussion with his mother about the wedding plans. Su Yang, on the other hand, casually snapped a photo of her hand.
In the photo, her slim, fair fingers wore two rings-one on her pinky, the other on her middle finger. The pinky ring was the Stuart Family matron’s emblem of authority, while the ring on her middle finger was unmistakably the one Chen Zhao had just used for his formal proposal. Together, the rings made it official-their wedding was coming soon.
The flood of reactions came quickly:
“My biggest takeaway here is that weddings in wealthy families apparently require three rings. Forgive me for my ignorance.”
“Wow, poverty really does limit my imagination.”
“I just can’t get over how gorgeous both rings are! Seriously, Ms. Lin, what is the middle finger ring even made of? I’m begging for details…”
…
The comments climbed exponentially, turning into an online frenzy. Chen Zhao, his gaze brimming with warmth, reposted Su Yang’s photo with words so tender they lit up hearts across the internet:
“From now on, you are my guiding light, and always my eternal star.”
