Supernatural Brokers Rampaging in the Human World - Chapter 157 - Tender Moments
“Why have you become so prone to tears?” Chen Zhao couldn’t help but smile wryly as he tried to help Su Yang up. Instead, she buried her head into his chest. He sighed softly and reached out to gently pat her back.
“You’re not mad at me?” Su Yang asked between sobs, her voice trembling. It took Chen Zhao a moment to make out her words.
“How could I ever be mad at you?” Chen Zhao lifted her head gently, unsurprised to see her tear-streaked face. Taking out a handkerchief, he carefully wiped away her tears and ruffled her hair tenderly.
Su Yang felt a twinge of embarrassment. Turning her head to the side, she let out a small huff, though her reddened and puffy eyes, paired with the flush creeping to her ears, made her look irresistibly endearing.
Chen Zhao suddenly scooped her up into his arms. Su Yang wrapped her arms around his neck, resting her head against his chest.
On their way, they passed by several Netherworld Messengers. Most of them were newcomers who had no idea about the pair’s identities. Those familiar with the existence of another Realm Lord in the Netherworld were often individuals over a thousand years old.
For example, Black and White Impermanence, who were currently bowing respectfully in the underworld palace. “Congratulations, Ma’am and Sir.”
Even though Su Yang knew they were referring to their restored memories and the return of their souls, for some reason, their tone made it sound as if they were offering congratulations for a wedding. She rubbed her face discreetly before asking them about their purpose for coming.
“Realm Lord Feng Bei asked us to see if you can return to the human world. By the looks of things, it seems you can,” Xie Bian explained. Feng Bei had been urging them repeatedly to return to the world above. Or rather, he simply wanted Chen Zhao to handle the numerous matters that awaited him up there.
Su Yang glanced at Chen Zhao. With their memories now fully restored, there was indeed no reason to stay here any longer. The human world undoubtedly held many unresolved matters awaiting their attention.
Though they had spent a century cultivating in the Netherworld, only five years had passed in the human realm. Yet within these five years, the changes had been nothing short of revolutionary.
People had begun to notice that the government’s stance on discussing supernatural incidents had considerably loosened. No longer were discussions swiftly silenced like decades prior. Instead, there was a laissez-faire approach, with phenomena like “ghost live-streams” gaining popularity. Even variety shows featuring psychic mediums had entered the mainstream.
The increase in various supernatural incidents had led to growing public demand for an authoritative explanation. People were desperate to know the truth behind the world’s composition.
As ordinary individuals who lived in this world just like everyone else, many felt a profound sense of unease at the idea that they might have missed out on an entirely different dimension of existence.
The laws and regulations regarding supernatural ability users were being discussed with remarkable frequency-minor meetings every three days and major conferences every five days. Everyone hoped these laws would be enacted as soon as possible.
Developments in extraterrestrial exploration were progressing just as quickly as those involving supernatural ability users. Back in 2081, Earth had already identified several other habitable planets. Besides the planet known as the Blue Star, located in the A1 Galaxy, numerous “solar system-structured galaxies” had been discovered across the Milky Way, many of which included habitable planets.
In 2082, the A1 Galaxy was formally renamed the “Deep Blue Galaxy,” becoming the first galaxy outside the Solar System to be officially named, rather than referred to generically as an outer solar system galaxy or “A1 Galaxy.”
When Su Yang first returned to the human world, she felt a sense of unfamiliarity with the Terminal, the universal device that had become the cornerstone of modern life. Upon opening its social network applications, she was immediately bombarded by countless posters calling for habitable planet volunteers, as well as announcements regarding the StarNet Project.
“Have things really progressed this far?” Su Yang muttered in mild astonishment as she scrolled through the posters and promotional materials, realizing she may have underestimated human ingenuity.
“My father… he’s been focused on the StarNet Project for years now,” Chen Zhao said, his tone wavering slightly at the mention of the word “father,” though he continued. “After the initial phase of construction, the Blue Star and several other habitable planets have network access. However, linking communications between planets still requires more testing.”
Su Yang could sense the turmoil in Chen Zhao’s emotions. She chuckled quietly but was quickly met with a light knock on her head from the man. Puffing out her cheeks, she shot Chen Zhao a playful glare.
“It probably won’t be long before large numbers of Earth’s population are relocated to other habitable planets. There’s so much out there waiting to be explored. But for now, we should focus on the matter of supernatural ability users,” Chen Zhao stated firmly.
“When do they plan to go public?” Su Yang asked, referring, of course, to the world’s governments.
“2088. By then, existing schools will begin openly accepting supernatural ability users as new students, including Laurel Academy. Additionally, a slew of new laws will be enacted next year. Honestly, it’s already an open secret-by now, everyone knows the world isn’t as simple as they once believed,” Chen Zhao explained while idly browsing through posts on his Terminal. Each one had some connection to supernatural ability users.
Su Yang leaned in for a look, skimming through the variety of posts. Some were personal accounts of individuals revealing how they’d hidden their abilities before but felt emboldened now by societal openness. Others detailed ghost encounters or supernatural experiences-an eclectic mix of stories.
One comedic post caught her attention, claiming that even household pets seemed to be transforming, while their owners remained as mundane as ever.
Su Yang burst into laughter, practically rolling on the floor at the sheer absurdity of some posts. One user shared how they’d always felt that their cat could understand them and looked down on them. But the nail in the coffin came when, just the night before, their cat finally spoke-terrifying the owner into believing they’d fallen into another dimension.
The comments under the post were equally amusing. Some people called the poster delusional, others said they believed them entirely, and a few added their own anecdotes-for instance, one claimed their dog had started speaking just a few days ago. It was a bizarre blend of skepticism and belief, leaving the truth almost impossible to discern.
“Can animals really gain intelligence that easily?” Su Yang asked wide-eyed, turning to Chen Zhao. To her knowledge, it seemed highly improbable for ordinary pets to transform in such a way.
“Some animals have always been hiding in plain sight. With the loosening of spiritual qi recently, it’s possible they’ve started exposing themselves. Others might just be naturally talented or exceptionally lucky,” Chen Zhao replied with a nonchalant shrug.
Upon returning to the human world, the first thing Su Yang and Chen Zhao decided to do was visit Cecilia and Albert. Unlike Feng Bei, the two weren’t privy to all the details about what had happened between Chen Zhao and Su Yang. And though they didn’t openly say so, it was clear they’d been deeply worried about their son. No matter who their son was, or how remarkable his identity might be, he was still their child at heart.
When Chen Zhao and Su Yang arrived at the Stuart Family’s castle, their presence was met with utter shock and joy from everyone there. Few could believe they had truly returned. To avoid unnecessary trouble, Chen Zhao abandoned his previous appearance and reverted back to shorter hair and his natural gray eyes.
The first to notice them was the ever-diligent butler. Upon seeing Chen Zhao, the man exclaimed excitedly, “Oh my goodness, Head of the Family… is it really you? Have you returned?”
The butler’s cheerful outburst quickly drew the attention of the other staff in the castle. Cecilia, having heard the commotion, also came downstairs to find her son. She was so overcome with emotion that she couldn’t contain herself. She rushed forward with open arms-only to bypass Chen Zhao entirely and embrace Su Yang instead.
“It’s been so long, Nuan! Where on earth did this rascal take you?” Cecilia exclaimed dramatically.
Chen Zhao: …? Feeling slightly offended. 😐
The butler promptly informed Albert and the rest of the family about their return. Shortly after, Albert hurried home from the company, his usual elegant demeanor momentarily giving way to a visible sigh of relief. “You troublemaker, you’re finally back! Now hurry up and go take care of things at the company!”
Chen Zhao: …Having second thoughts about leaving closed-door cultivation behind.
Su Yang couldn’t hold back her laughter, stifling her giggles as the family continued to direct all their warmth and attention toward her. It seemed they had collectively decided to ignore their biological son for the time being.
Edwin, standing off to the side, couldn’t help but laugh at Chen Zhao’s predicament. However, the moment Chen Zhao shot him a cold glance, he instantly straightened up and tucked his metaphorical tail between his legs.
Meanwhile, Su Mu and the others, who had witnessed Albert’s hurried departure from the company, exchanged knowing looks. They quickly pieced the situation together-it seemed their master had finally returned.
Not long after, rumors began circulating, originating from the Stuart Family Corporation itself. Whispers of Adonis Stuart returning with his fiancée, Lin Zhaonuan, spread like wildfire. But despite the growing buzz, most people chose to remain skeptical. Without concrete evidence or an official appearance, many suspected it might simply be a publicity stunt by the Stuart Family.
