Sunset Warrior Chant - Chapter 50 - Magical Beast Garden (Part 5)
The group quickly climbed up a large tree as the monocular wolves, with their sharply clawed paws, effortlessly pierced the bark to follow them up. Fu Qiruo and Xiao Gang, each wielding their sharp Spirit Sword and Berserk Sword, stood guard on either side of the tree branch. Several wolves that leaped towards them were swiftly chopped down. The wolf pack launched a frenzied assault but none escaped unharmed. This attack led to heavy casualties among the wolves. While on the ground, the wolves seemed to have a clear purpose; if they succeeded in their attack, they would at least manage to take a bite of human flesh. But now, as everyone hid up in the tree, more than ten meters above ground, even the less intelligent wolves realized the futility of their efforts and paused their attacks amidst heavy losses.
Everyone breathed a sigh of relief, sitting on the thick branches to rest, finally finding a safe haven. Looking down at the base of the tree, they saw a dense pack of monocular wolves, too many to count. In the darkness, countless red eyes shimmered, and beneath them, the scene resembled hell itself. The living wolves fought over the flesh of the fallen, and a strong scent of blood wafted up, making everyone feel nauseous, almost to the point of vomiting.
Xiao Gang, gasping loudly, looked at the wolf pack and chuckled. Suddenly, a red light flashed on his chest, and he pushed two small fireballs from his hands, shooting them straight down to the wolves below. The fireballs streaked through the air, drawing a red line before the wolves scrambled away. It wasn’t long before they regrouped and returned. Yu An laughed and said, “Your level 2 magic still lacks punch, watch this!”
Just as Yu An was about to unleash his light magic, sending a few Light Feather Arrows towards the wolves, a burst of red light flashed beside him. A series of red shadows shot towards the ground like lightning, hitting the wolf pack before they could react. The red light exploded with loud ‘bangs’.
“Taste my Blazing Eruption! Haha!”
It turned out that the fire mage was a teenager, a level 4 mage. The group felt a renewed sense of security, grateful for the presence of a mage whose power was equivalent to three or four level 3 mages.
Several wolves on the ground caught fire, howling in agony and rolling around, suffering greatly. The wolf pack dared not stay under the tree anymore and retreated several meters away from the tree roots.
Xiao Gang said, “Looks like we’ll have to sleep in the tree tonight.” He had just found a branch to lie on when suddenly Qi Nanshan cried out in alarm, pointing to a nearby tree, “The monocular wolves are climbing up from another tree, what do we do?”
Everyone was startled and quickly looked around. Dozens of red “eyes” had already climbed the nearby trees. With the help of some light from the fires below, they carefully inspected their tree, which had many large branches extending to nearby trees, seemingly forming a continuous structure. The wolves were rapidly climbing along these branches towards them.
Qi Nanshan had already drawn his knife, standing guard on a thick horizontal branch several meters above ground. The flashing blade in his hands startled the pack of monocular wolves below, making him seem like a formidable warrior holding off thousands at a pass.
Xiao Gang swung his sharp Berserk Sword, easily cutting down several thin branches nearby. As the branches fell, several monocular wolves clinging to them plummeted into the wolf pack ten meters below, their screams filling the air. Just as Xiao Gang was about to continue swinging his sword, another monocular wolf lunged at him, forcing him to block with his sword.
The circle of trees was over thirty meters in diameter, and the wolf pack climbed the horizontal branches with their sharp claws, moving steadier than one would expect. The humans, caught off guard, found themselves at a disadvantage, and the situation quickly became critical. Someone shouted, “We must hold them off now, drive the wolves down!”
Everyone exerted all their strength, battling the wolves fiercely. Amidst the dark forest, the tree they were on trembled continuously; the sounds of magic breaking the air, swords clashing, wolves howling, and humans shouting mingled into chaotic turmoil. The tree seemed to transform into a dazzling magic formation.
Yu An and a mage stayed in place, crouched on a large tree branch, guarding against wolves attacking from below. Seeing the fierce onslaught of the wolves, a level 4 swordsman vibrated his limbs, creating a loud crackling noise. Battle energy gathered around him, forming his Golden Battle Armor. With a leap forward, he plunged into the wolf pack like a tiger among wolves.
Several monocular wolves pounced towards the swordsman. One wolf bit into his leg, as if biting into hard stone, but he ignored it. Two other wolves lunged at his chest, but he grabbed each wolf’s head in his hands, brought them together, and with a loud ‘bang’, blood splattered as both wolf heads shattered. The bodies of the wolves twitched before hanging limply in his grasp. With a powerful throw, he hurled the wolf corpses aside, the force knocking several other charging wolves far beyond the trees.
A level 4 fire mage continuously shot fireballs towards the treetops, igniting them and slightly suppressing the wolves’ aggression. Although a few monocular wolves still leaped through the flames, the fire mage, from a distance, knocked them down one by one.
Suddenly, a couple of wolves sprang onto the mage’s shoulders. Shaking violently, he cast a level 3 fire magic, Fire Wall, and the wolves that bit onto him were instantly scorched, smoking from the heat. Alone, the fire mage valiantly fought off over a dozen monocular wolves, his prowess awe-inspiring.
The others, armed with swords, each found a thick horizontal branch to defend against the wolf attacks.
Two monocular wolves were moving side by side on a branch that was only about two feet wide. Seeing the golden glint of the Berserk Sword in Xiao Gang’s hand, the round branch seemed barely wide enough for one wolf to run. As the wolves jostled together, they struggled to maintain their balance and risked falling from the ten-meter height with any slight misstep. One clever wolf retreated, while the other leapt forward. Xiao Gang swung his sword lightly, and the wolf in mid-air had its leg sliced off by the Berserk Sword before tumbling down from the tree.
Xiao Gang stepped forward, sending his sword into another advancing monocular wolf. The blade pierced its throat as it leapt towards him, causing the rest of the wolf pack to halt their assault, watching him pace back and forth.
With a swift pull of his Berserk Sword, the wolf fell from the tree. Xiao Gang flicked the blood off his sword and rested it on his shoulder, chuckling, “Let’s see how you manage to come over!”
Just as he finished speaking, he heard Yu An calling out from behind him, “Watch out!” Xiao Gang didn’t realize who Yu An was alerting until he suddenly felt a warm sensation at his ankle, followed by a sharp pain.
A lone monocular wolf had quietly crept up from beneath the branch where Xiao Gang stood and bit down hard on his ankle. The pain caused his leg to buckle, nearly causing him to tumble off the tree in an unsteady flip.
However, Xiao Gang, now a skilled level 3 swordsman, was enveloped in concentrated battle energy, making him resilient to ordinary blows and punches. The level 2 magical beast could only inflict a surface wound. In this critical moment, he steadied himself, and using the momentum, lunged forward, grabbing a thick branch with his left hand. He swung himself back up, launching an attack to slice the ambushing monocular wolf off the tree. Xiao Gang crouched to inspect his foot, revealing two rows of red bite marks.
Seeing that Xiao Gang wasn’t seriously hurt, Yu An felt somewhat relieved and shouted, “The monocular wolves have sharp claws and can climb up from below. Keep an eye on your footing. These pesky wolves are relentless, chasing us all the way up here! Let’s cut these branches off.”
Taking advantage of the temporary lull in the wolves’ attack, everyone began chopping away at the thinner branches first. A level 4 swordsman swung his sword, executing a Wind Chasing Slash as golden sword beams flew out, scattering splinters in all directions. Together, they cleared a large open space around the tree, severing the outer branches. The monocular wolves could no longer use adjacent trees to leap onto theirs.
In no time, the tree had been burnt and chopped, reduced by two-thirds, leaving just a bare stretch in the middle.
Fu Qiruo glanced down at the tree roots beneath him, waving his hands downward. A layer of thick ice crusted over the six to seven-meter section of the trunk below, making the surface smooth and slippery. Even with the wolves’ sharp claws, they couldn’t easily grip or scratch it. The wolf pack was no longer able to climb the tree. This thick ice also served as an alert: if any monocular wolf tried to stealthily scrape the ice, it would make enough noise for everyone above to hear clearly.
The wolves launched two more attempts to charge the tree from its base but met with no success and eventually gave up, retreating to encircle the tree at about ten meters away, their blockade still tight. At one point, the monocular wolves came up with a new idea: to gnaw at the tree roots and try to uproot it. However, before they made significant progress, everyone noticed, and a barrage of magic rained down, dispelling any hope the wolves had.
Once the pack had been driven back, everyone sat on the tree, each breathing heavily. Aside from Xiao Gang’s foot injury, fortunately, there were no other casualties.
In the darkness of night, magical beasts from afar noticed the skirmish and approached, only to flee in alarm upon encountering the wolves. No one feared the ox-headed man; though he was a level 6 swordsman and temporarily impervious to blades and weapons, he couldn’t possibly fend off the hungry wolf pack indefinitely.
The blackened forest night gradually grew still, as two or three people remained on watch while the others took turns sleeping. Fu Qiruo, pondering where Lu Xiner might be alone in this ominous forest, slowly drifted into slumber.
By dawn the following day, the eastern sky was awash in red light, and as expected, the monocular wolves, deterred by the sunlight, reluctantly withdrew, vanishing without a trace. In the rosy morning light, the tree, stripped of its dense foliage, stood out prominently in the forest, rising conspicuously above the others.
The tree seemed to have become the group’s camp. As the sun rose, nobody was eager to leave, feeling that there was no safer place in the Magical Beast Garden for the time being, so they decided to temporarily make their home in the tree.
