Spoiled by Love - Sweetheart, Don't Tempt Me - Chapter 131 - No Life Threat
G City’s military hospital had been notified in advance, so when the helicopter arrived, all medical personnel and equipment were ready. As soon as Xia Zhennan arrived, he was rushed into the emergency room.
Holding tightly onto her husband’s hand, which was gradually regaining warmth, Niantong ran alongside the medical staff carrying the stretcher towards the emergency room. Her gaze was fixed on her husband as she declared firmly, “I’ll be waiting for you outside!”
At this moment, what words could be more motivating to the weakened Xia Zhennan’s will to survive? His wife was waiting outside; even if he had to crawl back from the brink of death, he would return to her side!
With the transfusion and IV drip, Xia Zhennan’s body was slightly stronger than when he was first found. Just as her hand was about to release his, he suddenly grasped her hand tightly again, his eyes clinging to his wife’s face with deep affection. He struggled to move his lips, and a hoarse whisper escaped from his throat, “Don’t be afraid…”
“I’m not afraid, I’m not afraid. I know you can pull through. I’m not afraid, husband, I’ll be waiting for you to come out!” After saying this, she shared a deep gaze with him, seeing the profound trust and understanding in each other’s eyes. She let go of his hand, allowing the doctors to push him into the emergency room.
As the heavy, cold emergency room door slammed shut, Niantong’s heart seemed to echo the sound, spreading a chill throughout her body. She began to tremble, her eyes fixed on the flashing red light, feeling as if she were living in a torment of fire and ice every second.
Her heart was warm, believing her husband would emerge from the emergency room safely, yet her body couldn’t help but feel cold. The pain of worry and fear for him made her tremble all over.
Fortunately, Miqi and the others arrived soon.
No one spoke, leaving this space for the mother and daughter.
Finding her father, Xiaomai was both happy and scared. She knew deep down that her father’s condition was not good after being hidden on such a deep cliff for so long. Seeing her mother standing alone in the corridor, tears burst forth like a spring, “Mom, how’s Dad?”
Seeing her little one, Niantong suddenly felt a surge of strength. She was now the pillar of the family, the sky for Xiaomai, and the courage for her husband to live. She couldn’t afford to be anything less than brave. She crouched down and hugged her little one tightly, “Sweetheart, Dad is doing well. He’ll be out to see you soon. Let’s wait for him together, okay?”
“Yes, yes, Xiaomai wants to wait with Mom for Dad.” She bravely wiped her tears, suddenly seeming to have grown up.
Niantong gently wiped her tears, but couldn’t help her own eyes from becoming moist again, “Sweetheart, when you see Dad later, he might look a bit different from before. Don’t be scared.”
“Xiaomai’s not scared. Xiaomai knows Dad might be hurt and look different, but he’s still the hero in Xiaomai’s heart. Xiaomai’s not scared.” No matter how Dad changes, he will always be the tallest figure in Xiaomai’s heart, her most beloved Dad.
“Yes.” Her daughter was waiting for him too, and she believed he would have even more courage to pull through!
The mother and daughter embraced tightly, tears glistening in their eyes, yet smiles graced their lips. Anyone who has ever experienced happiness would understand the profound, genuine, and touching sense of joy that such smiles convey.
Occasionally, medical staff hurried out of the emergency room, quickly fetching supplies before rushing back in.
Everyone understood without needing to ask questions, simply waiting in silent anticipation, trusting in his recovery.
Suddenly, the red light above the operating room flickered off, starkly noticeable in the quiet corridor. All eyes instinctively turned towards the heavy wooden door.
The chief surgeon emerged first. Unlike most family members who would rush forward to inquire about the patient’s condition, Zhan Niantong waited until he removed his gloves and mask, revealing a solemn expression, before she took a step forward.
That small step required all her courage, as she had already gleaned some answers from the doctor’s serious demeanor-her husband’s condition was not optimistic.
Indeed, the doctor approached her, unwilling but compelled to share the truth, his voice heavy with gravity: “Mr. Xia has multiple fractures, particularly severe in the left leg. Fortunately, his internal organs and head haven’t suffered major trauma, so there shouldn’t be any serious issues. We’ll need to conduct more detailed examinations tomorrow to be certain.”
He handed her the X-ray films, a stack of over a dozen sheets. Zhan Niantong’s heart raced, nearly causing her to lose her balance. She quickly scanned through them, finally finding several films showing completely normal bones, allowing her heart to settle back into rhythm.
Just fractures, that’s good.
She visibly relaxed, surprising the doctor. In his twenty years of practice, he had encountered countless family members, none of whom reacted with relief upon hearing such news.
Realizing the doctor’s surprise, Zhan Niantong hurried to explain, “What could be more important than him being alive…”
The doctor understood, nodding silently. Indeed, what could be more important than life itself?
He felt genuine admiration for this young woman who understood the value of life: “Don’t worry too much. With today’s advanced technology, fractures can be treated.” Though he knew that the knee and ankle might pose challenges, he chose not to mention it now.
“Thank you, I’m not worried,” she replied, her gaze resolute.
“I’ll be on duty tonight, in my office if you need anything,” the doctor said, nodding before turning to leave.
Soon, Xia Zhennan was wheeled out of the emergency room. After the rescue efforts, he looked vastly different from when he was first brought in. The most noticeable changes were the cast on his leg and the bandages wrapped around his left leg. Now clad in a hospital gown, his bare chest revealed a scar that had begun to scab over, still looking quite unsightly despite the treatment. Yet, his face, once handsome but now marred with wounds, broke into a smile. Especially when he looked up and saw the happiness radiating from her face, his world seemed to brighten instantly.
Seeing his previously pale and wan face light up with that smile, warmth surged through Zhan Niantong’s heart. She followed the medical staff carefully into the private ward.
Entering a ward instead of an intensive care or observation room-what did this signify? Zhan Niantong was overjoyed. It meant that Xia Zhennan’s vital signs were rapidly improving, and he was out of immediate danger, allowing him to move directly into a ward.
The doctors quickly settled Xia Zhennan in and then quietly left, leaving the small space to the waiting family.
However, as the doctors departed, Miqi and the others silently exited the room as well, gently closing the door behind them.
At that moment, Zhan Niantong, with her eyes only on her husband, didn’t notice any of this. She stood firmly about a meter from the bed, her gaze fixed on him. As she watched, her eyes began to well up with tears.
She didn’t notice, but Xia Zhennan, lying in bed, did. Yet this was exactly what he wanted. After not seeing his wife for so long and enduring such a harsh trial, he greedily gazed at her, unwilling to blink even once.
But it felt like an eternity had passed, and his wife still hadn’t come closer. Having regained some strength, Xia Zhennan couldn’t help but call out, “Honey, come here…”
His voice was noticeably stronger than when he entered the emergency room, and Zhan Niantong was instantly overjoyed. She finally stepped forward, crouched beside him, and tightly grasped his hand, urgently asking, “Do you feel uncomfortable anywhere?”
Xia Zhennan shook his head, then nodded, “Yes.”
This startled Zhan Niantong, “Where?”
His eyes remained locked on hers as he pulled her hand to his chest, “Here.”
His heart? The thought that his heart might be unwell frightened Zhan Niantong. She quickly tried to pull her hand away to stand up, anxious, “I’ll get the doctor.”
But Xia Zhennan held her hand firmly, and seeing her puzzled look, he slowly explained, “Honey, it hurts not because I’m injured, but because you cried. It breaks my heart.”
Stunned, Zhan Niantong’s tears flowed freely, yet she smiled as she wiped them with the back of her hand, “Okay, I won’t cry.” She needed to be happy, not cry! She couldn’t let him worry or feel heartache!
Feeling guilty and deeply pained for causing his wife such worry and sadness, Xia Zhennan reassured her, “Honey, I’m fine. I really feel fine.” As long as you’re by my side, everything is wonderful. No matter how much it hurts, as long as I see you, I don’t feel the pain.
Her husband’s assurance made Zhan Niantong nod tearfully. She crouched back down beside his bed, looked at him tenderly, and gently massaged his brow with her fingertips, “You must be tired. Get some sleep. I’ll watch over you.”
“Okay.” Over the past three days, he had been severely injured and lost a lot of blood, drifting in and out of consciousness. He had never felt as secure and at ease as he did now. As his nerves relaxed, his weakened body succumbed to fatigue. He didn’t resist, behaving like an obedient little boy, and closed his eyes compliantly.
Only by resting well and recovering quickly could his wife truly be at ease.
