Spoiled by Love - Sweetheart, Don't Tempt Me - Chapter 116 - A Big Misunderstanding
Even though she had already read the information from the doctor’s expression, hearing it spoken aloud still hit her hard. In disbelief, she pulled out yesterday’s blood test report from her bag, pointing at the elevated hcg levels. “How can this be? I just had a test yesterday, and the hcg levels had clearly increased a lot. How could this happen? Could there be a problem with the machine?”
Her eyes, filled with doubt, were more like those of someone hoping for a mistake, perhaps a mix-up with the reports.
The doctor glanced at the test report, his expression somewhat resigned as he explained, “For accuracy, I specifically conducted two urine tests just now, and the results were the same. It could only mean that your hcg levels were indeed elevated yesterday, but have returned to normal today. This suggests that the cause of the elevated hcg levels wasn’t pregnancy, but something else.”
“What do you mean? Is there something wrong with my wife’s health?” Xia Zhennan interjected. It was impossible not to feel a twinge of disappointment; after all, as a thirty-two-year-old man, the prospect of new life is always met with anticipation. But his primary concern was for his wife’s health. The discrepancy between the two test results indicated something was amiss. If it wasn’t a machine error, then it had to be an issue with his wife’s body. The doctor’s words made it clear that it wasn’t a machine problem.
Seeing his concern, the doctor turned to him and explained, “Please don’t worry. Your wife is perfectly healthy. Many factors can cause elevated hcg levels. For instance, many modern foods contain hormones that aren’t good for the body. Consuming too much of these in a short period can accumulate hormones, disrupting the body’s fluid systems, and significantly increasing hcg levels. And there are other reasons…”
As the doctor continued to list common causes, Zhan Niantong suddenly gasped, covering her mouth as her eyes dropped, her face turning pale.
The doctor’s words reminded her of the imported snacks she had taken from Xiaomai!
Oh no, just eating those snacks caused such a significant change in her hcg levels. It was terrifying! Thankfully, she had eaten them herself rather than letting the little guy have them; otherwise, her small body wouldn’t have been able to handle it!
She must warn Gong Xiaoqiao not to give Xiaomai so much junk food anymore. It’s harmful, not loving.
Having caused such a big misunderstanding, she felt utterly embarrassed, unable to face anyone.
The change in his wife’s expression was so evident that Xia Zhennan couldn’t miss it. Connecting the dots from the doctor’s words, he guessed that she must have eaten something she shouldn’t have, and in large quantities!
“What’s going on? What have you been eating?” he couldn’t help but ask, puzzled. His wife never seemed to have a particular fondness for any food. She always knew how to take care of herself, understanding what to eat more of and what to avoid, and she practiced this diligently, teaching the little guy well. Suddenly, she had consumed so many snacks; she must have really loved them. But how come he didn’t know his wife had such a strong liking for any food?
Upon hearing this, Zhan Niantong lowered her head even further, so much that only her forehead was visible. Her voice was as soft as a mosquito’s buzz, “Well, Xiaoqiao sent a lot of snacks for Xiaomai. I didn’t want to let her eat them, but I also didn’t want them to go to waste, so…”
Walking down the corridor, seeing his wife with her head down, Xia Zhennan curled his lips slightly, wanting to say something, but the words got stuck at the tip of his tongue and he swallowed them back. Instead, he gently took his wife’s hand, interlocking his fingers with hers.
The warmth from his palm made her finally lift her head, though the dejected look on her face remained. “I’m sorry, honey, for getting your hopes up and making you rush back from so far away.”
Xia Zhennan stopped in his tracks, deliberately putting on a stern face, his brows furrowing into an arc. “I don’t like hearing that. Didn’t we agree to be happy whether or not we succeed?”
“I’m not unhappy. I just feel guilty for making you so busy and then having you come back to be with me,” she said, feeling only guilt, not sadness for not being pregnant. Her husband had explained so much to her, and if she were truly upset, it would be unfair to the careful work he had done to reassure her.
“Silly, you’re my wife. I can’t always be with you, and now that I’m here for a while, you feel guilty. What should I feel when I can’t be with you all the time?”
She quickly replied, “No, that’s not what I meant.” She had never blamed him; he had already done everything perfectly, leaving nothing to criticize. How could she possibly blame him?
“Alright, let’s not talk about this anymore.” Seeing his wife so anxious, he decided to change the subject. “What’s going on with your period? Didn’t you see the traditional Chinese doctor last time? Why hasn’t it been regulated yet?”
His wife’s attention shifted immediately. Hearing him mention her mischievous period, her childlike innocence surfaced, and a blush crept onto her cheeks as she stuck out her tongue awkwardly. “I don’t know, maybe it needs more time! It can’t be effective so quickly.” If her period had been punctual, she wouldn’t have foolishly caused such a laughable misunderstanding!
“Then let’s get some more traditional Chinese medicine.” He was determined to help his wife get her body back in balance; it was his duty as her husband.
“Alright!” Although the medicine tasted awful, she was willing to endure it for the sake of having a healthy body for their future baby.
At that moment, her phone rang from her bag. It was the anxious Gong Xiaoqiao, who had been waiting at home, watching the clock. As soon as the time was right, she called to check in.
“Didn’t conceive,” Zhan Niantong said with a pout, uttering just three words before quickly pulling the phone away from her ear. As expected, a high-pitched scream erupted from the other end, “How could you not be pregnant? I was already thinking about what to give the little baby as a welcome gift. All that excitement for nothing!”
How dare she complain! That infuriating friend, Zhan Niantong instantly turned fierce, “It’s all your fault! Those snacks you gave Xiaomai messed up my HCG levels. You’re the real culprit here.”
Uh… Miss Qiao was clearly taken aback, not expecting it to be linked to that matter, and was momentarily stunned, unable to retort.
“Next time, don’t sneak snacks to the little guy. They contain a lot of hormones and are really unhealthy. Eating them could upset her stomach or even land her in the hospital,” Zhan Niantong spoke with some severity, though she wasn’t trying to scare her friend. She was just overly concerned about the little guy, fearing the worst and reminding herself to be cautious.
Gong Xiaoqiao, who had never been a mother, was instantly frightened. She whimpered, “I’m sorry, I didn’t know. Please don’t be so harsh.”
Her friend had never been this stern before, and it made her feel uneasy.
“If I’m not stern, you won’t remember,” Zhan Niantong thought of the potential consequences if the little guy ate those snacks, and pretended to be fierce. Without a deep impression, her carefree best friend wouldn’t remember. Finally, after Miss Qiao repeatedly promised, she was satisfied to let her off the hook.
Xia Zhennan watched his wife’s expressive face, a contented smile spreading across his own. His wife had learned to pretend to be angry to educate others. Thankfully, she used this tactic on others and not on him, or he’d be in trouble.
“Wife, you’re getting better at being a teacher.”
“I’m just stating the facts,” Zhan Niantong lifted her chin, automatically taking her husband’s words as praise, and even felt a bit smug. Her eyes caught sight of the phone in her hand, and she suddenly remembered the little guy, “I should call the little guy; she’s probably been thinking about this.”
As soon as she dialed, the call was answered immediately. The little guy must have been watching the phone closely.
“Mom, I’m on the small balcony. Grandpa and Grandma aren’t here. Tell me quickly, do you have a baby in your tummy?” As expected, she was eager, going straight to the point.
“Sweetheart, I’m sorry, there’s no baby in Mommy’s tummy,” she paused, feeling a bit guilty as she spoke, “I’m sorry for disappointing your expectations.”
“Oh, there’s no baby!” The little guy sounded a bit disappointed but quickly laughed, “It’s okay, I can still have Mommy’s love all to myself. That’s pretty good, hehe!”
Such a sweet little guy, she missed her so much after just a short time apart, “Sweetheart, ask Mr. Wu to bring you back later… uh…” A sharp pain in her earlobe made Zhan Niantong turn her head to see her husband’s dark face. He opened his mouth, revealing two gleaming white teeth-the culprit who had just bitten her earlobe-and whispered, “Wife, let her come back in the evening.”
The little guy’s cheerful voice came through the receiver, “Okay, okay!” She rarely spent so much time apart from her mom and was eager to return to her.
Xia Zhennan raised his eyebrows, signaling his wife to come up with an excuse to placate the little guy.
Familiar with him, she understood his meaning with just a raised eyebrow, “Um… um… I just remembered, I have to go back to school this afternoon for something. How about Mr. Wu brings you back in the evening?”
“Oh, alright then,” the little guy agreed reluctantly but obediently, said a few more words, and then hung up.
