Spoiled by Love - Sweetheart, Don't Tempt Me - Chapter 115 - Not Pregnant
“Niantong, Niantong, wake up!”
Zhan Niantong merely mumbled something under her breath, showing no signs of waking up.
Gong Xiaoqiao had to resort to her ultimate trick, whispering softly into Niantong’s ear, “Niantong, your husband is back. You need to go pick him up at the airport.”
Miraculously, Zhan Niantong, who had been sleeping soundly, suddenly opened her eyes wide and got up. By the time Gong Xiaoqiao realized what was happening, Niantong was already at the wardrobe, changing clothes.
“Niantong, how come you didn’t think I was lying?” Xiaoqiao asked, surprised by Niantong’s unquestioning trust and swift actions.
Niantong finished putting on her sweatshirt, then turned around, her gaze steady and unwavering in the dim light of the wall lamp. “I trust he would do this.”
He cared for her deeply, loved her dearly. Knowing she might be pregnant and needed to get checked, he wouldn’t be at ease unless he was with her. Even if he had engagements with the leaders tonight, he would still rush back, traveling miles to be by her side. Such love moved her, made her feel blessed.
Gong Xiaoqiao was impressed by Niantong’s resolute gaze. Perhaps this was the tacit understanding between lovers, something she, who had never truly experienced love, couldn’t comprehend.
Niantong picked a woolen coat from the closet and put it on snugly. Seeing Xiaoqiao still dazed, she asked, “Are you coming with me to the urban area?”
“Of course, if I don’t go, how will you explain to your mother-in-law why you’re going out so late?” Xiaoqiao was loyal to her friends, always ready to lend a hand when needed.
Though they were close friends, Niantong felt grateful for Xiaoqiao’s help. Without her, she wouldn’t know how to explain to her mother-in-law. “Thank you.”
“Don’t mention it. Just give me a moment, I’ll be ready.”
Xiaoqiao knew her friend was anxious, so she didn’t dawdle. She quickly tidied herself up, and the two of them headed out. They happened to run into old Mrs. Xia, who was about to go upstairs to rest. Seeing their attire, she was puzzled, “What are you two up to?”
Niantong immediately approached, holding her mother-in-law’s hand, “Mom, I’m sorry. Xiaoqiao has some family matters, and I need to take her home. I’m really sorry.”
If she told her mother-in-law that her husband was back, she wasn’t sure if her mother-in-law would be upset. After all, the relationship between a daughter-in-law and mother-in-law is naturally fraught because they both vie for the son’s attention. Even if the mother-in-law is understanding and generous, she might still have feelings about her son returning home but not coming to see her.
“You silly child, what are you saying?” Old Mrs. Xia was slightly displeased, “You’ve been part of our family for so long, why are you still so formal with me? If you have something to do, just go ahead. No need to report to me like I’m some government official.”
Niantong was taken aback by her words and quickly apologized, “Mom, I’m sorry.”
“Again with the apologies.” Old Mrs. Xia feigned a stern face.
Niantong awkwardly stuck out her tongue and lowered her head, obediently keeping quiet. Her mother-in-law treated her so well, like her own daughter. Though she regarded her as a mother, there was still a deep respect that sometimes created distance. That was her fault.
Old Mrs. Xia sighed inwardly. Her youngest daughter-in-law was mature, but after all, she was still just a twenty-year-old young woman, and she couldn’t help but worry. “It’s so late, I don’t feel comfortable with you two girls going back alone. How about asking Mr. Wu to drive you?”
Her mother-in-law’s words warmed her heart, making her feel none of the chill of the autumn night. “No need to trouble him, Mom. I can manage.”
Gong Xiaoqiao quickly chimed in, supporting her, “Yeah, Auntie, Niantong is a great driver. She even races cars! There’s absolutely no problem.”
“Oh, I see. Then hurry back! I’ll have Mr. Wu take Xiaomai home tomorrow night, so don’t worry.” Old Mrs. Xia thought of everything. “Give me a call when you reach the urban area, okay?”
“Okay, thanks, Mom.”
In the early hours in Haicheng City, the night wind rustled, the autumn breeze brushed her face with a chill, tousling her hair. Yet she felt no cold, as if a warm current was flowing through her chest, warming her entire being.
At the airport, waiting alone in the vast and empty arrival hall, the announcement of the plane’s on-time arrival echoed in her ears. She stared intently at the exit, her mind replaying scenes from when she first met him until now, like a movie. Her low threshold for tears made her eyes well up uncontrollably.
Past images were vivid, his words echoed clearly and profoundly. Love had already begun to sprout the first time she saw him, and that small sprout had grown at a crazy speed into a towering tree, occupying her entire heart, affecting her very being. With each thought of him, each moment of longing, she felt full of happiness.
Finally, when that striking figure appeared among the crowd, she couldn’t hold back her tears any longer. She wanted to run over and hug him, but her feet felt as if they were weighed down with lead, unable to move. She could only let her tears blur her vision, watching him through the misty veil.
As Xia Zhennan emerged, he immediately saw his solitary wife with tears streaming down her face. His heart felt like it was pricked by a needle. Ignoring the murmurs of onlookers, he hurriedly stepped forward, reaching her and pulling her tightly into his embrace.
The familiar scent filled her nostrils, held by the familiar chest, she broke into a radiant smile through her tears.
“What’s wrong, honey?” Xia Zhennan was so alarmed by her tears that his heart nearly jumped out, gently wiping away her tears.
It must be said, even the smartest person can become muddled when it comes to the one they love. Didn’t he see his wife’s mouth was curved in a smile? Though she cried so intensely, it was out of happiness-these were tears of excitement and joy!
“Why did you suddenly come back? You’re so annoying! You didn’t even give me a heads-up before hopping on a plane. I couldn’t stop you even if I wanted to.” Niantong sniffled, her hands forming fists as she playfully pounded on his chest. But her punches were as gentle as a tickle, the kind that lovers share-hitting means caring, and scolding means love!
Xia Zhennan finally understood. Silly girl, if you knew, would you have let me come back? He had to act first and inform later, boarding the plane before having his secretary call his wife half an hour later to pick him up.
“Alright, it’s my fault. I shouldn’t have come back.” He caught her little pink fists and held them tightly in his palm, a soft smile playing on his lips as he gazed tenderly into her eyes. “But honey, I’m already here. You can’t send me back now, can you?”
She sniffed again, holding back the tears threatening to spill over, then looked up at him with eyes made even clearer by the tears.
He was instantly captivated!
“Dream on! You’re not going back. You scared me like this, so tonight, I’m punishing you by making you warm my bed.”
Ahem… Indeed, she’s grown from a girl into a woman, becoming more confident and less shy. She even dared to say “warm my bed.”
“As you command, my dear wife.” He was more than willing to comply. How could this be a punishment? It was pure enjoyment.
“You drank and didn’t rest, yet you traveled all this way back.” She couldn’t help but grumble, though it was all out of concern for him.
He knew her well, leaning closer to her and deliberately breathing onto her face. “Honey, I only had a little to drink tonight. See, there’s hardly any smell.”
Though there was still a faint scent of alcohol, Niantong’s heart was reassured. “Alright, but from now on, try not to drink, okay? It’s not good for your health.”
“Yes, if my wife says no drinking, then no drinking.”
She didn’t know how much plain water he drank on the plane to get rid of the alcohol smell. He practically drank all the water on the plane, spending the two-hour flight alternating between drinking and visiting the restroom, just to ease her worries.
“Let’s hurry home. You did drink, so you need to rest soon.” She tugged at his arm.
“Okay, but let me look at you first.” The night was cold, with temperatures around ten degrees, and it would be even colder if the wind picked up. Seeing his wife dressed warmly, he nodded in satisfaction. “Good, you’re dressed warmly. You won’t be cold. My wife is so sensible; I don’t have to worry even when I’m not around.”
“Of course! I wouldn’t let myself get cold.” Though eager to meet him, she made sure to take care of herself first, so he wouldn’t worry.
“That’s right, my wife is the smartest.” Zhennan wrapped his arm around his wife’s shoulder as they walked outside, feeling so cheerful that he couldn’t resist teasing her a bit. “Wife, aren’t you a direct descendant of Zhan Zhao? Why do you cry so easily?”
Little did she know, every tear she shed tugged at his heartstrings.
Niantong snuggled comfortably in his embrace, breathing in his familiar scent, feeling warm and cozy inside. She rolled her eyes at him, her gaze playful yet unable to hide her smile. “Isn’t it all your fault?”
“Yes, yes, it’s my fault.” Zhennan, the epitome of a devoted husband, treated his wife’s words like royal decrees; whatever she said was right. “I shouldn’t have come back without asking for your permission, making you cry so much. Should I write a self-criticism letter?”
Who would voluntarily offer to write a self-criticism letter? Was he addicted to writing them or what?
But those three words immediately reminded Niantong of that love poem. Every night, she would take out that ‘love letter’ and read it several times, falling asleep with his deep affection, making her dreams sweet with his love.
“Are you going to write me another love letter?” Her eyes sparkled as she looked at him.
Zhennan met her bright gaze and couldn’t resist tapping her on the head. “You like my love letters that much?” Actually, when he mentioned the self-criticism letter, he meant it literally, with no connection to love letters. However, since his wife loved his love letters so much, he decided to write more in the future! She could treasure them, and when they were old, they could look back at them and savor the romance.
She wasn’t shy, playfully sticking out her tongue. “You write them well!”
Being praised by his wife, Zhennan felt quite smug! Of course, he had been a top student since kindergarten, so his writing skills were naturally exceptional! Especially when it came to love letters for his wife, he poured his heart into them, making them extraordinary.
But his wife’s next words startled him, nearly causing him to choke on his own saliva.
“Your love letters are so good; you must have written them often before!” Niantong’s face tightened at the thought, her gaze filled with suspicion and a hint of threat, as if saying that if he dared to admit it, she would transform into a little cat and pounce on him, tearing his mouth open.
Seeing his wife’s anxious expression, Zhennan wanted to laugh but dared not. He replied honestly, “No, I promise the one I wrote for you was the first.”
Niantong breathed a sigh of relief, her eyes flashing mischievously as she pretended not to believe him. “How could the first one be so good, like you have a lot of experience?”
“That’s because I wrote it for you, so I put my heart into it.” Her sly gaze was captured by him, and he didn’t expose her act, patiently explaining while flattering her a bit. “You inspire all my potential.”
A leader is indeed a leader; his words were concise and to the point, instantly sweetening her heart. She playfully lifted her chin, raising her eyebrows proudly. “I’m honored.”
With that, she took his hand, and the two of them joyfully ran down the empty corridor, their laughter ringing like bells in the wind.
Sitting inside the super cute Beetle, the man who had been drinking instinctively took the passenger seat.
Niantong had just fastened her seatbelt and was about to start the car when strong arms pulled her shoulders, turning her slightly. She blinked in confusion, only to have a handsome face rapidly close in and steal her breath away.
The warm breath carried a faint scent of alcohol, mingling with the urgency of their reunion, enveloping them in a familiar and cherished aroma.
Her heart seemed to explode, igniting a bright flame. She reached out, wrapping her arms around his neck, responding gently and shyly, as if trying to ease the longing of the past days.
Thinking of how he rushed back so late just to accompany her to the hospital, her heart trembled slightly, her arms tightening with gratitude. “Thank you, darling.”
Her misty eyes stirred a heat within him. He took a deep breath, suppressing the warmth, and lightly brushed her delicate nose with his rough fingertips. “Silly, I’m the one who should be thankful.”
“Let’s not talk about this anymore, darling. Let’s go home!” She wanted to return to their cozy little home, to snuggle in his arms, warm and comfortable.
Finally, at around one in the morning, the couple lay on their comfortable bed, embracing each other. This time, there was no passion, just the simple act of holding each other, feeling each other’s warmth, heartbeat, and breath.
“Sweetheart, sleep now. We have to go to the hospital in the morning.” If he hadn’t wanted to see her immediately, to hold her at night, he wouldn’t have asked her to pick him up, making her stay up so late.
But Zhan Niantong was willing to be “tormented” in such a sweet way. She lifted her face to kiss her husband’s cheek. “Goodnight, darling.” Then she nestled into his arms, found the most comfortable position, closed her eyes, and drifted into sweet dreams.
In her dream, she seemed to be snuggling in her husband’s embrace, and then a little Baozi jumped into her belly from afar. Her belly grew rounder and bigger, almost bursting, and she was about to see the little Baozi’s face. But just then, a familiar voice pulled her back from her dream.
“Sweetheart, it’s time to get up. It’s eight o’clock, and we need to go to the hospital!”
Niantong woke up slowly. Normally, she’d be grumpy for being pulled out of a good dream, but she was eager to share it with her husband. “Darling, I just dreamed about our little Baozi.”
“Uh…” Xia Zhennan was momentarily confused.
“I mean the baby!” Niantong smiled sweetly, confidently touching her flat stomach, her expression tender like a loving mother-to-be. “I dreamed about the baby. I think there must be a little baby in my belly.”
Seeing his wife like this, Xia Zhennan couldn’t help but ruffle her hair again. “You’re so silly! We agreed to be happy whether or not there’s a baby.”
“Yes, yes, but there’s still hope!” She continued to touch her belly, as if there really was a little Baozi inside.
“If there’s no baby, we won’t be disappointed.” To distract her from the thought of the little Baozi, Xia Zhennan leaned close to her ear with a mischievous whisper. “We’ll just have to try harder in the future.”
As expected, his wife’s face turned crimson all the way down to her neck.
Thus, the morning began with a beautiful start.
With her husband by her side and having slept until eight, Zhan Niantong was in high spirits. This was not only thanks to Xia Zhennan but also to her best friend, who knew she would have stayed up late last night. To let her sleep a bit longer, her friend contacted the hospital and rescheduled the appointment to nine in the morning.
Since her husband was back, naturally she wanted him to accompany her, so Gong Xiaoqiao didn’t join the excitement. She just made a phone call, “Girl, don’t worry. I specifically asked the doctor to speed things up. We’ll know the results soon.”
Thus, it was just the couple heading to the hospital, directly to the lab.
The doctor had been waiting inside for quite some time, and the examination itself was quite straightforward.
Even though there was a dedicated doctor attending to them, the machine tests still required some time, a half-hour wait was inevitable.
Sitting in the chair, Zhan Niantong was quite tense, tightly clutching her husband’s hand, her gaze fixed on the lab door, eager to see the doctor emerge first. This sight left Xia Zhennan feeling a bit helpless.
“Wife, don’t be so nervous.” Seeing his wife so anxious, he was grateful for his decision. If he couldn’t be by her side, letting her face this tension alone, he would feel so guilty, like he wasn’t a competent husband.
“Husband, what if the test shows there’s no little Baozi?” The closer they got to the moment of truth, the more anxious she became, her desire for a little Baozi growing stronger, along with the fear of not being pregnant.
“If there’s none, then there’s none. I didn’t want you to have a child right now anyway.” His wife was so nervous she forgot the promises she made to him earlier. He needed to patiently explain again, which might also distract her, “You have to think, you’re still so young, not at the optimal age for pregnancy. The child born might not be the smartest! To ensure our child is smarter, we should wait a bit.”
Using the child as a topic, she might consider it for the child’s sake, and her desire for a little Baozi might not be as strong.
Zhan Niantong felt it made sense, but her nervousness made her want to find something to make time pass faster, “But women in ancient times had children at thirteen or fourteen.”
“I don’t know about that. I only know that if my wife waits until she’s twenty-three, the baby will be smarter.”
Oh, never had she hated being so young as much as she did now, “Alright, if I’m not pregnant this time, to make the baby smarter, I’ll wait until I’m twenty-three.”
Finally, she understood!
As they chatted, time flew by, and soon the lab door opened, with the doctor briskly walking over with the test results.
The couple immediately stood up, nervously watching the doctor.
Faced with such tense and expectant eyes, the doctor, who initially had a serious expression, gave a helpless smile, which said it all.
Zhan Niantong turned to exchange a glance with her husband, seemingly already knowing the answer.
Sure enough, the next moment, the doctor revealed the test results, “I’m sorry, the test shows your hcg levels are normal, indicating no signs of pregnancy!”
