- Chapter 113 - I'll Help Mom Take Care of the Baby
“You fool, I keep telling you, but you never believe me.” She was such a silly woman, adorably foolish, and he couldn’t help but love her for it. “Didn’t I tell you before? Now isn’t the best time to get pregnant. Once I return and my work stabilizes, if you want to have a baby, we’ll do it right away. That way, there’s nothing for me to be disappointed about!” As for when his work would stabilize, well, that was up to him.
His words were heartfelt. First of all, from a medical standpoint, she had just turned twenty, which wasn’t the ideal age for pregnancy. Plus, carrying a child for ten months was a tough ordeal. He didn’t want his wife to endure such hardship before she had fully enjoyed her youthful years. Moreover, early childbirth wasn’t good for a woman’s health!
Besides, his wife was still a student. She hadn’t even received her diploma before getting a marriage certificate, which already sparked gossip. If she ended up pregnant, she’d surely face even more judgmental looks from her peers. She might not care, but he felt for her.
Most importantly, he didn’t want his young wife to become a housewife so soon.
Her heart relaxed a little, unaware of the myriad thoughts swirling in her husband’s mind. She was still focused on another issue, so she continued to ask, “What if I do get pregnant?”
“Naturally, I’ll be with you, eagerly awaiting the arrival of our love’s fruit.” Although now wasn’t the best time for pregnancy, if it happened, he’d be thrilled and look forward to the little one’s arrival. He’d just have to work a bit harder, balancing home and work. In truth, the hardest part would be on his wife, so young and already tied down by a child, unable to enjoy her youthful freedom.
All he could do was, upon his return, strive to make it up to her, showering her with all his love and happiness.
“Thank you, hubby. Now I feel much more at ease.” Regardless of the test results, she wasn’t afraid anymore. Tonight, she could sleep soundly, without any insomnia.
Knowing he was with the provincial committee leaders, the call ended quickly.
As soon as the call was over, the carefree Gong Xiaoqiao immediately leaned over, nudging the satisfied-looking person beside her, and giggled, “See, I told you to tell him. Whether or not you’re pregnant, he wouldn’t be disappointed! You didn’t believe me, but now you’re reassured, right?”
“Yes.” After hearing her husband’s comforting words, she felt happy regardless of whether the test showed she was pregnant or not.
But it seemed only the two of them in the room knew about this matter. How did Xia Zhennan, far away, find out? Someone must have tipped him off, but it couldn’t have been either of them. Who could it be?
The answer was obvious!
The two exchanged glances, seeing surprise in each other’s eyes!
They had been so cautious, yet the little guy had picked up on it, pretending nothing was amiss until reporting to Xia Zhennan at just the right moment. Such composure! And so clever!
Sometimes, having a child too smart can be quite a dilemma for a mom!
“I’ll go see her,” Zhan Niantong stood up, ready to have a talk with the little guy.
Gong Xiaoqiao immediately grabbed her arm, speaking up for her niece, “Don’t blame her! She’s worried about you too.”
“Look at you all anxious, who said I’m going to blame her?” Zhan Niantong rolled her eyes in exasperation at Gong Xiaoqiao’s nonsensical actions and brushed off her hand. “I just want to have a good talk with her.”
Earlier, she had too many worries, so she didn’t dare tell the little guy. Now, thinking it over, she felt that hiding it from the little guy might have been the real mistake.
Though the little guy was young, she was obedient and sensible. As long as Zhan Niantong explained things reasonably, she would listen. She believed that if she really had a little Baozi, Xiaomai would definitely be a good sister.
So now she needed to talk to the little guy, to see how she felt about her having a baby. If she was worried that she might be neglected because of the baby, Zhan Niantong planned to patiently reassure her that such worries were unnecessary, and she would always love her.
Sure enough, as she gently pushed open her room door, she heard the little guy’s cheerful voice from the balcony, “Yes, Xiaomai knows, Dad, you go ahead! Work is important, I’ll help take good care of Mom.”
Hearing this, Zhan Niantong’s heart warmed. Truly her little sweetheart, so considerate, always thinking of her first. How could she not love her, pamper her, and treat her as if she were her own?
The little guy received all sorts of praise from her dear dad, and her mood soared. But as she came in from the small balcony and saw her little mom in the room, her body immediately tensed up, and her smile froze. The change was too obvious, highlighting the difficulty of being a ‘double-faced little spy.’
Zhan Niantong shifted her gaze from the little guy to the report spread out on the bed, raising an eyebrow. Could this report have betrayed her? But the little guy hardly recognized any words, let alone understood what the hcg value represented!
Alright, she thought it over and understood. The little guy must have told her husband about her unusual behavior and the hcg value on the report. Her husband, with his smart mind, naturally figured it out.
Seeing her mom’s unsmiling face, the little guy, feeling guilty, thought her mom was angry and hurried over to confess, “Mom, I’m sorry, I was wrong.”
Seeing the little guy looking so pitiful, Zhan Niantong pulled her over to the bed, hugged her, and sat her on her lap, holding her close. “You did nothing wrong, Mom should be thanking you.”
Mom not only wasn’t upset but wanted to thank her? This was too unexpected for the little guy, deepening her sense of guilt. “But I secretly told Dad without telling you.”
“Because you told Dad, his words reassured Mom. It was Mom’s mistake; I shouldn’t have kept it from you and Dad,” Zhan Niantong gently asked, “Sweetheart, are you mad at Mom?”
The little guy was now sure her mom wasn’t angry and flashed a bright smile, “Of course not, Xiaomai knows Mom was afraid we’d worry!”
“Our little sweetheart is so sensible.” Such an understanding child, she was hers, and thinking about it filled her with pride.
Having just received praise from Dad and now from Mom, the little guy felt life couldn’t be better: “Of course! Dad just praised me, saying I’m sharp, smart, and a good kid.” Well, maybe he should have added: clever too!
However, Mom’s next probing question made her smile freeze for a moment.
“Sweetie, if Mom had a baby in her tummy, what would you think?”
Seeing the change in Xiaomai’s expression, Zhan Niantong felt a bit anxious and quickly added, “Mom’s just saying ‘if,’ just ‘if.'”
Indeed, children are sensitive, especially those growing up in single-parent families. It seemed she was having a hard time accepting it at first.
But who knew, Xiaomai’s face broke into a smile the next moment: “If Mom has a baby in her tummy, I’ll help Mom take care of the baby.”
Wow, even though Mom said “if,” she felt like Mom might already have a baby in her tummy!
Even if Mom has a baby now, by the time the baby is born, she’ll be six years old and able to help take care of the baby.
This surprise was so unexpected that Zhan Niantong could hardly believe her ears. She stared at the little guy with her eyes wide open: “Sweetie, is that really what you think?”
“In our class, many kids have their own little brothers and sisters, and they help their parents take care of the babies too. Xiaomai can do it.” Xiaomai was confident in herself and believed she had enough charm to make the baby love her as a sister: “Besides, I think having a little brother or sister is great. Tuantuan has Yuanyuan as a sister, and they always stick together, holding hands around the school, which makes them look so cool. Many kids envy them, and I want to hold my little brother or sister’s hand and make other kids jealous too.”
The little guy was indeed strong, liking siblings for the sake of being cool.
However, her heart was still touched. The little guy would surely love the baby, and the last bit of worry disappeared. She hugged her tighter and decided to clarify some things, preparing her for what’s to come: “But if Mom has a baby, the baby is so small and can’t do anything, Mom might have to share some of her energy and love with the baby, and you’ll get a little less love.”
Thinking about this, Xiaomai’s little brows furrowed together: “Yeah, that’s so confusing!” She really wanted to keep all of Mom’s love and not share her dear Mom with anyone.
“But losing a bit of Mom’s love means you’ll gain the baby’s love for their sister, so you won’t really lose out! Maybe the baby will love their beautiful and cute sister the most, who knows!” To ease the little guy’s worries, this Mom was even willing to let the baby love the sister more than her dear Mom! Wow, what a big sacrifice!
“Yeah, yeah!” This simple math problem was quickly solved by the little guy, who felt she had gained a lot.
