Spellbound Hearts - Chapter 91 - Midnight Call
Facing Wu Shu’s inquiry, Ji Xuan didn’t hesitate for a moment and answered decisively.
“No.”
Wu Shu was puzzled, “Not even a little bit?”
Ji Xuan firmly and certainly said, “No.”
Wu Shu asked, “Why?”
Ji Xuan replied, “Why what?”
Wu Shu shook her head on the other end of the phone, “That’s not scientific.”
Ji Xuan laughed, “You understand science?”
Wu Shu didn’t fall for Ji Xuan’s attempt to change the subject and brought it back around, “Even though Song Zhaoli’s reputation is a bit poor, he’s got looks and money. Why aren’t you tempted at all?”
Ji Xuan laughed, “There are plenty of men with looks and money in Qing City. Should I be tempted by all of them?”
Wu Shu said unwillingly, “But he’s within your reach.”
Ji Xuan smiled, “Where did you see that he’s within my reach? A man like that…”
Ji Xuan wanted to say that a man like that, who appears to be idle and carefree, is actually calculating every step, and most people can’t see through him. But she paused to prevent Wu Shu from overthinking, saying instead, “A man like that is unattainable.”
The words “unattainable” struck a sensitive nerve in Wu Shu. She nodded in agreement over the phone, “Indeed.”
The love between Cinderella and the prince is a fairy tale. In reality, it’s usually a disaster. Not to mention whether the prince’s family would oppose the marriage, even meeting the prince is a problem. Different social circles, how can you expect a prince to mingle with the common folk? If there truly is such a prince, nine times out of ten, he’s not mingling for the sake of the people but simply looking for amusement. And you are that amusement.
Thinking of this, Wu Shu’s gossiping mind suddenly changed, and she once again warned Ji Xuan, “Song Zhaoli is not someone you should provoke. You must stay away from him.”
Ji Xuan had no intention of provoking him and responded with a smile, “Don’t worry, I understand. Staying away from Song Zhaoli ensures a long life.”
The two chatted for a while, resolved their concerns, wished each other goodnight, and hung up the phone.
After the call ended, Ji Xuan got up from bed, heated a cup of milk for herself, drank it, and lay down to sleep. Suddenly, the image of Song Zhaoli getting beaten flashed in her mind. Ji Xuan’s eyes snapped open, and she let out a long sigh. Who would have thought? A man so arrogant and domineering outside would have such a side.
Ji Xuan turned over, wrapping herself like a cocoon in the middle of summer. On the other side, after hanging up with Ji Xuan, Wu Shu sat at the bedside, not sleeping at all. Watching the time hit 3:40, she figured Liao Bei should be fast asleep. She tapped her finger on the screen and dialed his number.
The call connected, the ringtone played, but Liao Bei didn’t answer. Seeing the screen display the call was disconnected, Wu Shu smirked and dialed again. After calling ten times repeatedly, Liao Bei finally picked up on the eleventh call. Before Liao Bei could get angry, Wu Shu spoke first with a smile, “Manager Liao, I got the information for you.”
Liao Bei was already groggy from sleep, and being woken up again didn’t improve his mood. But to avoid letting Wu Shu notice anything amiss, he couldn’t get angry and had to hold it in, “Speak.”
Hearing Liao Bei’s gritted teeth, Wu Shu was in high spirits. To make him more alert, she didn’t get straight to the point but started asking about his daily routine, “Manager Liao, what time do you usually go to bed?”
Liao Bei, suffering from insomnia, felt his temples throb, “It depends, usually around eleven.”
Wu Shu continued, “What do you like to eat? Any dietary restrictions?”
Liao Bei’s temper flared, “I don’t eat anything with a fishy smell.”
Wu Shu responded with an ‘oh’ and sweetly asked, “Do you have any hobbies? Like swimming or working out?”
Liao Bei was on the verge of anger, but for the sake of friendship, he held back, “I work out, usually more than three times a week.”
Wu Shu continued, “What kind of workouts do you do? Aerobic or anaerobic exercises?”
Wu Shu’s questions were increasingly absurd, driving Liao Bei to madness, “Do these questions relate to what I asked you to do?”
Wu Shu thought: Ha, you know they don’t relate. But she couldn’t say what she was thinking, so she pretended, “No relation, I’m just curious about the lifestyle of a successful person like you.”
Liao Bei, “…”
Wu Shu’s overly sincere attitude reduced Liao Bei’s anger by half, thinking it was her genuine curiosity. After a moment of silence, he said, “I’m not saying you can’t ask, but it’s not appropriate to ask at this hour. It’s sleep time.”
Wu Shu mocked silently: You know it’s sleep time? I thought you had a part-time job with the Grim Reaper and didn’t know what nighttime rest was.
Feeling that Liao Bei was sufficiently irritated, Wu Shu cleared her throat and got to the main point, “Manager Liao, I asked about the project you mentioned. Xuan Xuan said it’s not impossible to acquire, but you need to lower the price. She didn’t disclose how much, because the Song Group is also planning to acquire this project.”
After Wu Shu finished speaking, Liao Bei responded perfunctorily, “Hmm.” He wasn’t interested in the project at all.
Sensing Liao Bei’s lack of enthusiasm, Wu Shu worried he might get angry again, so she wisely asked, “Any other questions?”
Liao Bei, “No, sleep well.”
Wu Shu replied with a smile, “Goodnight, sweet dreams.”
Listening to Wu Shu’s laughter, Liao Bei frowned. He didn’t know if it was his imagination, but her laughter seemed like a successful scheme, very much like a villain…
