Spellbound Hearts - Chapter 83 - A Trap or Unintentional?
This voice was not unfamiliar to Ji Xuan.
She had just heard it today in Song Zhaoli’s office.
It was Elder Song.
Upon hearing this, Ji Xuan pressed her lips into a straight line, unsure of the situation on the other end, so she dared not speak further.
She dared not speak, nor did she dare to hang up.
Ji Xuan blatantly ‘eavesdropped’.
After Elder Song finished speaking, probably annoyed by Song Zhaoli’s lack of response, he barely suppressed his anger and asked, “I’m only going to ask you once today, are you going to marry Xie Yao or not?!”
Song Zhaoli’s voice was lazy and indifferent, “No.”
Elder Song was on the verge of fury, “No? Let me tell you, you will marry her whether you like it or not. Do you know how much benefit a marriage between the Xie Family and the Song Family can bring?”
Song Zhaoli replied sarcastically, “I don’t know, and I don’t want to know.”
Elder Song, “Song Zhaoli!!”
Song Zhaoli scoffed, “You don’t need to get so angry with me. I’m not the only grandson in the Song Family. My uncle has two sons, both older than me. Seniority matters, so it shouldn’t even be my turn.”
Hearing Song Zhaoli’s words, Elder Song was completely infuriated, “But you are the head of the Song Family now!”
Song Zhaoli mocked, “So should I step down and let someone more capable take over?”
Ji Xuan couldn’t see the scene at the Song Family’s side, but just listening to this tense conversation was enough to startle her.
Suddenly, Ji Xuan remembered something Wu Shu had told her before.
Wu Shu mentioned that years ago, there had been a kidnapping incident involving the Song Family. It was unclear what exactly happened during that incident, but after several grandsons of the Song Family were rescued, some died, some went mad, some fell ill; the only one who remained normal was Song Zhaoli…
Lost in thought, Ji Xuan suddenly heard Elder Song curse loudly through the phone, “You should have been the one to die in that kidnapping incident!”
Song Zhaoli coldly sneered, “The ones who should have died didn’t, those who shouldn’t have gone mad did, it seems Heaven doesn’t care much for the Song Family.”
After Song Zhaoli spoke, a crisp slap sounded through the phone.
Ji Xuan inhaled sharply through her phone, her grip on the device tightening instinctively.
After a while, Song Zhaoli’s deep, magnetic voice, somewhat amused, sounded again, “Are you done? If there’s nothing else, I’ll be going.”
Elder Song’s voice trembled with anger, “Get out, just get out, leave now!”
After what felt like a long time, Ji Xuan heard the sound of a car engine starting through the phone.
Ji Xuan pursed her lips, tentatively speaking, “President Song?”
There was no response from Song Zhaoli.
Ji Xuan paused, then spoke again, “President Song, can you hear me?”
As the sound of a lighter sparking a cigarette came through, Song Zhaoli’s voice, deep and resonant, responded, “Hmm.”
Ji Xuan had been waiting for Song Zhaoli to respond, and now that he had, she suddenly didn’t know what to say.
After a moment, Ji Xuan tried to speak again, “President Song, did you call me for something?”
Song Zhaoli’s voice, emotionless yet slightly suspicious, returned, “I called you?”
Ji Xuan was momentarily stunned, a realization striking her.
Could it be that Song Zhaoli had accidentally hit the dial button?
Thinking this, Ji Xuan suddenly felt embarrassed.
If Song Zhaoli had indeed accidentally dialed her number, and she had eavesdropped for so long…
As Ji Xuan pondered how to explain herself, Song Zhaoli’s voice suddenly came through sternly, “Is there still dinner? I haven’t had dinner yet, I’m hungry.”
