Spellbound Hearts - Chapter 101 - Killing the Donkey After the Mill is Done
Faced with Song Zhaoli’s distortion of the truth, Ji Xuan pressed her lips together and remained silent.
After a while, Song Zhaoli wrapped his arm around her slim waist, pulling her into his embrace, and spoke again, “Isn’t this what they call burning bridges after crossing the river?”
Ji Xuan’s red lips twitched, her expression cold, “This is called killing the donkey after the mill is done.”
Who the donkey was, went without saying.
The prime ‘donkey’ Song Zhaoli, who had expended both energy and effort, ended up being relegated to the guest room.
When he was kicked out of the master bedroom, he leaned against the door frame to negotiate with Ji Xuan.
Ji Xuan looked him in the eye and said just one word, “Get out.”
At two in the morning, Ji Xuan lay tossing and turning in the master bedroom, frustrated and confused, she pulled the quilt over her head.
How did things end up like this?
She… couldn’t figure it out.
In the adjacent guest room, Song Zhaoli sat on the edge of the bed, smoking a cigarette, when Liao Bei texted him: “Dog Song, still awake?”
Song Zhaoli, in a good mood, didn’t mind: “Say what you want.”
Liao Bei: “Awake at this hour, tsk tsk, up to no good.”
Song Zhaoli glanced at his phone and replied: “Not sleeping at 2 AM, are you summoning spirits?”
Liao Bei: “Did you feel my call?”
Song Zhaoli: “Yeah, I heard you calling me dad.”
Liao Bei: “Don’t change the subject. Tell me, did you take advantage of Ji Xuan again?”
Song Zhaoli’s lips curved slightly: “Rumors stop with the wise.”
Liao Bei replied: “Conversations end with ‘haha’.”
Song Zhaoli: “Good night.”
Liao Bei sincerely sighed, heartfelt words: “If everyone had a bit more shame, the world would be a better place.”
Seeing Liao Bei’s last message, Song Zhaoli didn’t reply, tossing his phone aside, the smile in his eyes deepening as he thought about what happened tonight.
The next day.
Ji Xuan got up early, made breakfast, and left the house before Song Zhaoli woke up.
By the time Song Zhaoli called her, she had already turned off her phone and boarded a flight to Changsha.
Two hours and forty minutes later, Ji Xuan arrived at Changsha Huanghua International Airport.
In June, the most notable feature of Changsha is the heat.
Ji Xuan dragged her suitcase out of the airport and took a cab to the hotel where Yu Hui was staying.
The information had been investigated in advance, and she had personally called to verify it, so there would be no mistake.
On the way to the hotel, the driver enthusiastically recommended local attractions to Ji Xuan.
Ji Xuan smiled back, “If I have time, I’ll check them out.”
Driver, “Are you here on a business trip?”
Ji Xuan answered truthfully, “Something like that.”
The driver looked at Ji Xuan in the rearview mirror and smiled, “Take some time to relax, don’t waste the trip. At the very least, visit Orange Isle and Yuelu Mountain.”
The driver was so enthusiastic that Ji Xuan couldn’t refuse, “Are they fun?”
The driver said, “We locals find them ordinary, but I see that people from out of town really like them.”
After saying this, the driver added a particularly philosophical remark, “Traveling is just going from a place you’re tired of to a place someone else is tired of.”
Ji Xuan smiled in response, “Indeed.”
Seeing Ji Xuan was easy to talk to, the driver took a business card from the center console and handed it to her, “A young lady traveling alone should be careful. This is my card; if you need a ride, just call me.”
Ji Xuan did need transportation, so she took the card and asked, “Are you available every day?”
The driver replied with a cheerful smile, “Mostly, if I’m not, I’ll have someone from our team pick you up. Don’t worry, if you’re not comfortable with us guys, I’ll have a female driver from our team pick you up.”
Ji Xuan, “Thank you.”
Driver, “You’re welcome.”
The car arrived at the hotel Ji Xuan had specified, and the driver got out first to help her with her luggage.
Ji Xuan took her suitcase, thanked him again, and entered the hotel.
As soon as Ji Xuan completed her check-in, Song Zhaoli’s call came through.
Song Zhaoli called twice in a row, and Ji Xuan hung up both times.
The third time, Ji Xuan swiped her finger across the screen to answer, her voice cool, “What is it?”
After Ji Xuan spoke, Song Zhaoli chuckled softly, “Ran away?”
Ji Xuan responded calmly, “If there’s no business, I’ll hang up.”
Song Zhaoli paused for a few seconds, then said meaningfully, “Ji Xuan, you can’t be like this. Even if you kill the donkey after the mill is done, you should at least give the donkey a sweet treat first.”
