Psycho. Ghosts? Whatever. - Chapter 31 - The Medium
As the school day came to an end, the students filed out of the classroom, chatting amongst themselves.
Even after just one lesson, every member of the Intelligence Class had gained valuable insights, clearing up many of the doubts they had harbored.
They could see things more clearly than the average person.
This era wasn’t going to end so easily…
At least, not with humanity’s current capabilities-it was far from enough.
“The future’s definitely going to get messy…”
Walking down the street, Bai Yuan mulled over the situation.
But he wasn’t too worried. With his condition and the Ghost Face as his backup, survival wasn’t going to be an issue.
“Buddy, I’m counting on you.”
He glanced down at his chest, as if he could see the Ghost Face residing within him.
At this point, it didn’t seem like the entity was out to harm him. Their relationship felt more like a mutually beneficial symbiosis.
I feed you ghosts, you give me pills.
Could there be anything more heartwarming than this?
…
Night fell.
Bai Yuan devoured the spread of meat on his table, finishing it off with a satisfied belch.
“Ah, that hit the spot!”
He patted his stomach, feeling a surge of energy coursing through his body.
Ever since his physical condition had skyrocketed, so had his appetite. If it weren’t for his savings, he might not have been able to afford his meals.
“Still, I can’t keep eating like this,” he muttered, a pang of regret flashing in his eyes. That modest pile of meat had cost him 300 yuan, a stark reminder of how steep prices had become.
If he kept this up, even with the Intelligence Class’s stipend, he wouldn’t last long financially.
“My phone’s getting old. I should find a chance to upgrade. And the appliances at home need replacing too. Ugh, I’m short on cash…”
Now that Bai Yuan had joined the Intelligence Class and had a stable income, he naturally wanted to improve his quality of life.
He sprawled comfortably on the hotel sofa, brainstorming ways to make more money.
Because of the supernatural incident earlier that day, his apartment complex had been sealed off, so Bai Yuan was staying at a hotel arranged by the authorities.
“Should I keep catching ghosts for money? But that’s risky, and it’s not like jobs are easy to come by.”
The recent surge in supernatural events had brought out a flood of con artists. As a high school senior, Bai Yuan wasn’t exactly the most convincing ghost hunter.
“Maybe I could go back to running a street stall? But that’s too slow, and I still have Intelligence Class lessons to attend.”
As he weighed his options, his thoughts gradually drifted, and he fell asleep.
…
The next morning, Bai Yuan was jolted awake by a commotion outside.
“What’s going on? Even the hotel’s this noisy?”
Yawning, he slipped on his slippers and opened the door.
The hallway was packed with people, their faces etched with fear and panic. Some were on the verge of breaking down entirely.
“Huh? Why does this scene feel so familiar?”
Seeing their expressions, a sinking feeling settled in Bai Yuan’s chest.
Something’s happened again?!
His eyes snapped wide open, and he quickly made his way to Room 506, where the crowd had gathered.
Sure enough, on the hotel bed lay a corpse, its body marked with eerie, bloody footprints.
“Damn it…”
Bai Yuan’s brow furrowed deeply. This was bad-very bad.
They had already moved far away from the neighborhood, yet the ghost still claimed another victim.
This confirmed one chilling fact: this ghost was just like the infamous Embroidered Shoes from the internet. Simply distancing oneself was futile.
It had already marked everyone here as its prey.
Bai Yuan let out a heavy sigh, his expression tinged with helplessness.
The people gathered here were his former neighbors, individuals who had shown him kindness in the past. Yet, faced with a situation like this, there was nothing he could do to help them. His unique abilities were limited to protecting himself.
The only thing he could do was make a call to Jiang Cheng, hoping the authorities would take this incident seriously.
Because if this continued, people would keep dying-day after day.
After receiving Jiang Cheng’s response, Bai Yuan quickly tidied himself up and headed off to school.
“Alright, everyone, today we’ll discuss how ordinary people can defend themselves against ghosts!”
Chen Qingli stood at the podium, continuing his lecture on supernatural phenomena.
“First, let’s talk about the characteristics of ghosts. Based on the Evil Ghosts we’ve encountered so far, we can categorize them into two types: spiritual body type and curse body type.”
“Spiritual body type ghosts are the ones you typically think of when you hear the word ‘ghost.’ In their normal state, they are invisible and cannot be physically touched by conventional means.”
“The second type, curse body type ghosts, are visible and tangible in their normal state. However, attacking them recklessly will result in being cursed. And don’t assume they’re like zombies or something. Even with their physical form, they can still exhibit bizarre abilities like invisibility or teleportation due to their supernatural nature.”
The students quietly jotted down Chen Qingli’s explanations.
For ordinary people, both types of ghosts were nearly insurmountable foes. One couldn’t be touched, and the other couldn’t be attacked.
However, since the topic of the day was how to deal with ghosts, there had to be some kind of solution.
“And to deal with ghosts, you must use a medium!”
Chen Qingli wrote the word “medium” on the blackboard and continued, “A medium is essentially your weapon. It allows you to touch spiritual body type ghosts and protects you from the curses of curse body type ghosts.”
“The most common mediums are materials often mentioned in folklore, such as black dog blood, rooster blood, and cinnabar.”
Bai Yuan nodded in understanding. He had already tested some of these methods in practice.
Someone raised a hand and asked, “Teacher, if we could equip everyone in the country with these medium weapons, wouldn’t that put an end to all supernatural incidents?”
Although the majority of ordinary people lacked the courage to face Evil Ghosts, the sheer number of humans was staggering. Even if only one in ten thousand-or even one in a hundred thousand-had the bravery to act, it could theoretically wipe out all supernatural threats.
After all, while supernatural incidents were numerous, they were still insignificant compared to the billions of people on the planet.
“It’s not that simple,” Chen Qingli replied, shaking his head. “The mediums I mentioned are only effective against low-level ghosts.”
“When it comes to high-level Fierce Ghosts, you still won’t be able to touch them, and you’ll still be susceptible to their curses.”
This revelation made the students realize the grim reality: to truly end the supernatural crisis, the key was to eliminate the most powerful Evil Ghosts.
“So, it ultimately depends on those with Accompanying Ghostly Entities to step in?” Bai Yuan’s eyes flickered with understanding as he posed the question.
“Exactly,” Chen Qingli confirmed with a nod. “Accompanying Ghostly Entities are essentially the most effective medium weapons. More importantly, they have the potential to grow stronger. They represent humanity’s only real chance of combating top-tier Evil Ghosts.”
The class collectively came to an epiphany. No wonder those with Accompanying Ghostly Entities were held in such high regard.
At the same time, a sense of quiet resignation settled over them. Even if they possessed boundless courage and were willing to sacrifice their lives, they could only ever hope to deal with low-level ghosts.
In the grand stage of this era, they were destined to remain mere supporting characters.
