Psycho. Ghosts? Whatever. - Chapter 28 - A Paranormal Incident Upstairs?
“Take a break for now. The school will be rearranging dormitories for everyone,” Wang Li announced as he stepped to the front, his gaze naturally landing on Bai Yuan.
As expected, Bai Yuan hadn’t let him down-he had successfully joined the Intelligence Class.
“Classes for the Intelligence Class officially begin next Monday. In the meantime, you can pack your belongings. If you’d rather not live on campus, you’re free to stay at home, but don’t be late for class!”
Hearing this, the crowd nodded in agreement. Most of them preferred to stay on campus anyway. After all, with Wang Li’s protection, this was arguably the safest place in the entire city.
The group gradually dispersed, chatting excitedly among themselves. Their voices carried a sense of joy and accomplishment. Even though they didn’t have Accompanying Ghostly Entities, their courage had allowed them to step into this mysterious world.
Bai Yuan, too, was in high spirits as he headed straight for the cafeteria.
“Two thousand yuan every month… finally, I won’t have to worry about going hungry,” he whistled, feeling a glimmer of hope for the future.
According to the Intelligence Class benefits, every member received a monthly stipend of two thousand yuan. On top of that, completing a single mission could earn them a hefty fifty thousand yuan. For an ordinary person in a small city, this was a fortune.
…
By evening, Bai Yuan had returned home.
He had chosen not to live on campus. While Wang Li was undoubtedly powerful, he couldn’t guarantee protection for everyone. The disastrous failure of Ghost Spirit Class Two was a stark reminder of that.
More importantly, Bai Yuan was worried about his Ghost Face being exposed. If that happened, and Wang Li mistook him for a ghost and decided to “deal with” him, wouldn’t that be a complete disaster?
“Learn Ghost Science, strengthen myself…”
That night, Bai Yuan lay on his bed, waiting patiently for the Ghost Face to “dispense medicine,” all while mapping out his plans for the future.
At the stroke of midnight, the Ghost Face emerged once again, presenting him with a pill meant to enhance his physical abilities.
“Is this the only kind of medicine it can make?” Bai Yuan muttered to himself. Without hesitation, he swallowed the pill, feeling his body grow slightly stronger once more.
“Maybe the ghosts I’ve consumed so far were just too weak?”
Although Bai Yuan wasn’t well-versed in ghost-related knowledge, he could make one thing clear:
Whether it was the ghost from today or that mass of flesh and blood from before, they were undoubtedly at the very bottom of the ghost hierarchy.
After all, these were the kind of ghosts that even ordinary people, armed with nothing more than a bit of rooster blood and some courage, could deal with.
For such low-level ghosts, the fact that they could produce any medicine at all was already impressive.
“I’ll have to find a way to test myself against a stronger ghost someday,” Bai Yuan murmured, though he wasn’t in any rush. He planned to take things step by step, steadily building his strength.
Even though he wasn’t naturally afraid of ghosts, his current abilities were still lacking.
Playing it safe and growing stronger was the only sensible path forward.
…
The next morning, Bai Yuan was just about to leave his house when he noticed a commotion upstairs. A crowd had gathered, their voices buzzing with heated discussion.
“Hmm? What’s going on up there?”
His expression tightened. In such a sensitive era, he immediately sensed that something wasn’t right.
Without hesitation, Bai Yuan headed upstairs. He found a group of people clustered around the entrance to an apartment.
Every face was marked with fear, and whispers of “Someone’s dead,” and “A ghost killed them,” rippled through the crowd. Several people were already dialing the authorities.
Bai Yuan listened to the chatter around him and quickly pieced together what was going on.
“Is there really a ghost here?”
He glanced at the doorway before stepping straight into the crime scene.
“Yuan, are you out of your mind? Get out of there!”
A familiar neighbor hurriedly called out to him. “There’s a ghost in there! Don’t go in!”
“Uncle Liu, it’s fine. I’m with the Intelligence Class now. This is exactly the kind of thing I handle.”
Bai Yuan flashed a quick smile and walked into the house.
The living room appeared normal, so he headed directly to the bedroom.
On the bed lay the body of a man in pajamas. His face was pale, frozen in an expression of sheer terror, as if he had experienced something horrifying in his final moments.
What caught Bai Yuan’s attention most, however, were the blood-red footprints scattered across the corpse. They were chillingly bizarre.
“So, it really is a supernatural incident?”
Bai Yuan narrowed his eyes, his mind already turning over the possibilities.
Outside, the commotion grew louder.
Uniformed security personnel arrived swiftly, sealing off the area.
“You again?!”
Jiang Cheng entered the bedroom and immediately spotted Bai Yuan.
His expression was a mix of disbelief and exasperation. “Why is it that you’re always at the scene of a death?”
“I live here,” Bai Yuan replied, trying to sound as innocent as possible. The last thing he needed was for Jiang Cheng to suspect him of being the culprit-again.
Jiang Cheng nodded, his attention shifting to the eerie corpse on the bed.
“A supernatural case?”
“Looks like it. Better call in the specialists.”
“Damn ghosts…” Jiang Cheng muttered, his voice tinged with frustration. He let out a long sigh.
“You should leave for now. Don’t come back home for a while.”
“How long are we talking?”
Jiang Cheng hesitated before replying, “Not sure. Could be a while.”
“Short on manpower, huh?”
From Jiang Cheng’s expression, Bai Yuan could already sense the underlying issue.
“Just don’t come back for now,” Jiang Cheng said, avoiding further explanation. But the worry in his eyes lingered.
Seeing this, Bai Yuan didn’t press further. He turned and left.
“Are supernatural incidents becoming too frequent?”
Though Jiang Cheng hadn’t said much, Bai Yuan could already grasp the severity of the situation.
At this rate, it seemed inevitable that this wave of supernatural chaos would eventually engulf the entire world.
Lost in thought, Bai Yuan found himself back at school, ready to head into the Intelligence Class.
“Bai Yuan, come here for a second.”
Wang Li’s voice called out from the hallway.
Is something wrong?
Bai Yuan followed Wang Li, his mind racing with possibilities.
Before long, the two of them entered an office.
It was still early, so the room was empty, its quietness almost unsettling.
“Let’s hear it,” Wang Li said, taking a seat at his desk. “Why did you kill that Yin Ghost?”
“Huh?”
Bai Yuan blinked, feigning confusion. “What Yin Ghost?”
“Don’t play dumb with me.”
Wang Li raised an eyebrow. “I’ve already asked around. You were the one sitting in the far-right seat that day.”
“Teacher, I really don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“This is yours, isn’t it?”
Wang Li smirked and pulled out a plastic bag. Inside was a small amount of rooster blood from the scene.
“It was found at your seat. There’s no point denying it.”
“Yeah, that’s mine,” Bai Yuan admitted with a nod. “But what does that have to do with any Yin Ghost?”
“Still pretending, huh?”
Wang Li’s brow furrowed. “If you didn’t kill the Yin Ghost, then why were you carrying rooster blood?”
“To wash my hands, of course.”
“…What?”
Wang Li’s jaw dropped slightly, caught off guard.
“I heard it wards off evil, so I carry some with me. Yesterday, my hands were feeling a bit dry, so I used it to wash them.”
“You used blood to wash your hands?!”
“Yep.”
Wang Li’s eye twitched. He hadn’t expected Bai Yuan to say it so matter-of-factly.
“Then why did you switch seats?”
“I didn’t want to accidentally spill it on anyone. That would’ve been rude, so I moved to a corner seat.”
“You… You’ve got an answer for everything, don’t you?”
Wang Li was momentarily stunned.
Bai Yuan’s explanations were full of holes, yet somehow, Wang Li couldn’t find a way to argue against them.
