- Chapter 14 - Can a Walnut Crushed by a Door Still Boost Your Brain?
“If only I could get it on credit…”
Bai Yuan sighed, feeling a bit disappointed.
“Hunting ghosts is risky unless I can find a Weak Ghost…”
Though he had a higher chance of encountering ghosts than most people, finding a Weak Ghost was no easy task.
“Take it slow…”
He knew rushing wouldn’t help; stealthy development was the way to go.
After all, everything was uncertain now-whether the authorities had countermeasures, how severe the supernatural incidents would become, and whether there were truly experts or special organizations among the populace. Bai Yuan was clueless about all this.
The next day,
Bai Yuan was sound asleep when a sudden ringtone jolted him awake.
“Bai-Ge, I found a source for fighting chickens!” Zhou Han’s voice was filled with excitement.
“Hmm? That fast?!”
Bai Yuan, initially groggy, perked up upon hearing this.
“Wait for me!”
Soon, the two met at a restaurant. After a brunch, they hopped into a rideshare car, heading straight to their destination.
“Yellow Earth Village?”
Bai Yuan was looking at the map on his phone; this place was nearly outside the boundaries of Ping’an City.
“Han, where did you find this?”
“My hometown is the neighboring village.”
Zhou Han scratched his head, saying, “My parents asked people from our hometown, and they happen to have rooster blood. The roosters in their village are quite fierce, known far and wide, so they should meet your requirements.”
“Really?”
Bai Yuan was slightly taken aback. Could a place be famous for such a thing?
“Should be true.”
Zhou Han nodded, saying, “I visited my hometown as a kid and got beaten up by those roosters.”
“…”
Bai Yuan’s mouth twitched, but he felt a bit of anticipation.
Two hours later,
The rideshare car stopped by the roadside, and the driver said, “Folks, the road ahead is rural; I can’t drive in. I’ll wait here for you.”
They nodded, having known this beforehand, and got out of the car.
Ahead lay a dirt path flanked by fields, with rural houses in the distance, smoke curling from chimneys.
“Let’s go.”
They exchanged a glance and headed straight for their destination.
After about ten minutes of walking, they arrived at their destination.
Yellow Earth Village!
At the village entrance, several villagers were gathered, chatting, seemingly waiting for something.
As the two appeared, an old farmer was the first to notice.
“They’re here! They’re here!”
The villagers turned their eyes toward them.
Zhou Han’s parents couldn’t accompany them due to business, but arrangements had been made in advance, so they just needed to go over.
“Are you here to buy rooster blood?”
An elderly man looked at them with cloudy eyes.
Their attire was distinctly different from the villagers’, marking them as city folk.
Bai Yuan nodded, his gaze drifting to a plastic basin surrounded by villagers, from which a bloody scent wafted.
“Mr. Zhou has already paid; you can take it directly.”
The old man glanced at their empty hands, saying, “I’ll have the villagers bag it for you.”
“Thank you.”
Bai Yuan nodded with a smile, realizing he had forgotten to bring something to carry it in.
Soon, the villagers busied themselves, packing the rooster blood for them.
Bai Yuan casually asked, “Sir, did the village slaughter all the roosters?”
“How could we?”
The old man shook his head, saying, “Killing one or two is fine, but we’d never slaughter them all.”
“Then this rooster blood…”
“Actually, these big roosters died a few days ago, and we stored the blood. It just so happened you wanted to buy it.”
“Died?” Bai Yuan’s brow furrowed.
“Bai-Ge, I didn’t know about this.”
Zhou Han, having overheard, hadn’t expected all the roosters to be dead.
“You’re not backing out, are you?”
The old man realized he might have said too much and quickly asked, worried.
“Since we’ve agreed, we’ll buy.”
Bai Yuan reassured him, saying, “Can you tell me what happened?”
The old man relaxed upon hearing this, then said, “This matter is indeed strange.”
“They were fine during the day, but at night, one or two would mysteriously scream and die, yet there were no visible wounds. We don’t know why.”
“…”
Bai Yuan’s brow furrowed, seemingly deep in thought.
Soon, the villagers finished packing the rooster blood, dividing it into plastic bags.
“Let’s go.”
Bai Yuan didn’t linger, leaving with the rooster blood.
The two walked side by side along the rural road.
“Bai-Ge, what are you thinking?”
Zhou Han, seeing Bai Yuan deep in thought, quickly asked.
“I’m thinking…”
Bai Yuan paused, saying, “Can a walnut crushed by a door still boost your brain?”
“Huh?”
Zhou Han was taken aback, momentarily unable to comprehend.
“What do you mean?”
Bai Yuan slowly explained, “The death of these roosters… might be related to ghosts…”
“You’re saying Yellow Earth Village is haunted?!”
“It’s a possibility.”
The roosters all died at night, with no visible wounds, and more importantly, their bodies remained intact at the scene.
If it were humans or wild animals, the roosters wouldn’t have been left there.
“Didn’t they trick us?!”
Zhou Han was indignant, saying, “I’ll go back and confront them!”
They bought rooster blood to ward off ghosts, but these roosters were killed by ghosts. Would the blood still work…
He now understood why Bai Yuan asked about ‘a walnut crushed by a door’…
“No need, maybe it was Fierce Ghosts. We bought it to deal with Weak Ghosts.”
Bai Yuan waved his hand, saying, “It should still be useful.”
Hearing this, Zhou Han nodded, no longer dwelling on it.
Just then, a motorcycle’s roar sounded behind them.
“Stop!”
A helmeted man sped past them on the motorcycle.
Then, with a stylish maneuver, he managed to swerve into a nearby field…
“…”
Bai Yuan and Zhou Han were stunned. What was this all about?
