- Chapter 11 - You've Already Got This All Figured Out, Haven't You?
In that brief moment of eye contact, Bai Yuan felt a chilling sense of impending doom. This ghost was no joke-it was downright terrifying!
“Just as I thought…”
His heart skipped a beat as he glanced down at his chest. Initially, he hadn’t realized the figure was a ghost, but as the taxi drew near, a sudden warmth spread across his chest, triggering his instincts.
“Didn’t expect you’d be this useful…”
Though the ghost face wouldn’t fight for him, at least it served as an early warning system!
“Sometimes, giving someone a ride isn’t just about the money,” the driver explained again, trying to justify his earlier offer.
Bai Yuan remained calm, saying, “Take my advice, things aren’t too peaceful lately. Be careful picking up passengers at night.”
“Why’s that?” The driver’s curiosity was piqued, and he quickly asked.
“Because sometimes, you might not be picking up a person…” Bai Yuan replied with a knowing look.
“True,” the driver nodded, occasionally glancing at Bai Yuan through the rearview mirror.
“?”
Bai Yuan paused, then realized what the driver was thinking. “I’m not talking about myself…”
“Got it, got it,” the driver chuckled awkwardly, as if to say, “No need to explain.”
Bai Yuan shook his head, paid the fare, and got out of the car.
“Good thing that ghost didn’t force its way in…”
Back home, Bai Yuan breathed a sigh of relief. That faceless woman was already wandering the streets, far more dangerous than the weak ghost from before. Without any black dog blood on him, if she had gotten in, he would’ve had to make a hasty retreat.
“Looks like I’ll need to carry black dog blood with me from now on…”
He wasn’t sure if the pace of change was accelerating or if he was just a magnet for ghosts, but his encounters with them were becoming alarmingly frequent.
The next day,
“Bai-Ge, how did it go?” Zhou Han eagerly asked as soon as Bai Yuan arrived at school.
“Old Liu said not to worry. It’s probably just stress, nothing major.”
“Really…”
“And if you notice any unusual changes around you, let me know immediately.”
“Huh?” Zhou Han’s heart sank at Bai Yuan’s serious expression. “What kind of unusual changes?”
“Like seeing someone in the corner of your room, under your bed, or hearing knocks from something unclean.”
“…”
Zhou Han’s face turned pale. “Bai-Ge, don’t joke around like that in the morning. It’s creepy.”
“Do I look like I’m joking?”
“…”
Zhou Han’s eyes widened, and he fell silent. Despite Bai Yuan’s unconventional thinking and unpredictable actions, his serious demeanor suggested he wasn’t lying.
“But don’t worry,” Bai Yuan reassured him with a pat on the shoulder. “It’s really not a big deal.”
“Not a big deal?!” Zhou Han exclaimed, then his eyes turned mournful. “Bai-Ge, you’re not saying it’s no big deal to arrange my funeral, are you…”
“…”
Bai Yuan was momentarily taken aback, then patted Zhou Han’s shoulder, comforting him. “You’re just dreaming, but I’ve actually encountered them.”
Zhou Han would never have guessed that Bai Yuan was harboring a ghost face within him…
“You’ve actually seen something unclean?” Zhou Han asked, shocked. “For real?”
Bai Yuan didn’t go into details. “The world is changing a bit. We just need to be careful.”
“Bai-Ge, you’re like a brother to me, but being careful won’t help. I’m dreaming about coffins every night. I’m already haunted.”
Zhou Han clung to Bai Yuan’s arm, tears in his eyes. “We’ve been brothers for years. You have to help me. I’m the only child in my family. If something happens to me, no one will inherit the family fortune.”
“Don’t worry, I’m here for you,” Bai Yuan assured him.
“Really? You can handle those unclean things?”
“Uh… I meant, if no one can inherit your family’s fortune, I could reluctantly step in.”
“???”
Zhou Han was speechless. You’ve already thought this through, haven’t you…
“Alright, don’t worry. You’re at school every day. What could possibly happen?”
Bai Yuan chuckled. “Also, I’m planning to apply for dormitory housing.”
“You’re moving into the dorms?”
“It’s senior year. It’ll be more convenient.”
“Then I’ll apply too! There’s a dorm in our class with two empty spots. It must be fate.”
“…”
Bai Yuan shook his head, saying no more. His decision to live on campus was partly for more study time and partly for safety in numbers. Even though he had gained some strength, caution was still necessary. The faceless woman had been a stark reminder.
…
The day passed quickly.
Bai Yuan and Zhou Han’s dorm applications were approved without a hitch, as it was beneficial for their studies. However, despite moving into the dorms, Zhou Han remained anxious and distracted all day. Bai Yuan’s words had him considering buying some protective items from home…
“Alright, stop overthinking it.”
At ten o’clock that night, Bai Yuan patted Zhou Han’s shoulder. “Time to head back to the dorm.”
“I’ll keep an eye out for you tonight. If there’s anything there, it won’t escape my notice.”
Bai Yuan had discovered that whenever he was near a ghost, his chest would warm up, effectively serving as a built-in alarm.
“Really?” Zhou Han clung to Bai Yuan’s arm. “Bai-Ge, I’ll treat you to a late-night snack!”
…
Later that night,
Bai Yuan lay comfortably in bed, feeling more satisfied than ever after a hearty meal.
“Bai-Ge, I’m counting on you tonight.”
From the bunk below, Zhou Han’s head popped up, whispering in Bai Yuan’s ear.
“No problem.”
Bai Yuan nodded. “Just to be clear, I can only check if there’s anything there. I can’t promise to deal with it.”
“Just knowing would help. At least I’d have some peace of mind.”
Zhou Han didn’t ask for more. “But aren’t we a bit far apart, being on different bunks?”
“Should I come up and sleep with you?”
He started climbing the ladder beside the bed.
“Get lost!”
Bai Yuan was startled. “We’re close enough. I can sense it.”
“Zhou Han, you guys are close, but not that close, right?” The others in the dorm were a bit shocked and wary of Zhou Han. Did he have some peculiar preferences?
“Gao Yi, you’re the dorm leader. Do something about him!” Bai Yuan quickly said.
Since they were all from Class 1, Bai Yuan was quite familiar with everyone.
“I wouldn’t dare. What if he climbs into my bed at night…”
“Gao-Ge, someone has to make a sacrifice. Why not let Zhou Han have his way?” another chimed in.
“You get lost too!”
After some banter, the eight of them returned to their beds. As seniors, this brief chat was a rare moment of relaxation.
As the dorm quieted down, a voice suddenly broke the silence.
“Hey guys, have any of you been online lately?”
“Yong, we don’t have our phones. How would we go online? Is there some hot news?”
According to school rules, students weren’t allowed to have phones, but some managed to sneak them into the dorms.
“You won’t believe it. There’s a lot of spooky stuff online lately.”
Yu Yong, now excited, handed his phone to Gao Yi. “Gao-Ge, check out this post.”
Gao Yi looked at the phone and read aloud, “A real paranormal experience I recently had. Not for the faint-hearted…”
