Peerless Demon Immortal - Chapter 6 - From Foes to Friends
The caterpillar bounced around like a marble, continuously striking the giant snake and leaving wound after wound on its body.
The giant snake, having endured enough of the caterpillar’s attacks, was filled with unending rage. This time, as the caterpillar lunged at him, the snake decided to take the hit head-on. Although it suffered significant damage, the immense recoil force caused the caterpillar to tremble, its wounds spurting green blood as it fell straight to the ground.
The giant snake twisted its body in pain but, upon seeing the caterpillar fall and not bounce back, a gleam of excitement flashed in its eyes. Ignoring its own pain, it opened its massive jaws to bite the caterpillar, its sharp teeth glinting with a menacing light, the tips shimmering with a toxic green hue. The caterpillar, having lost too much blood, lacked the strength to dodge and could only watch as the giant maw descended upon it.
Just as the giant snake was about to swallow the caterpillar whole, it felt something hard enter its mouth, instinctively closing its jaws with a crunch. Sweet juice sprayed out, and before it could comprehend what had happened, it noticed four more fruits flying towards it.
The giant snake easily dodged the incoming fruits and turned its gaze to where they had come from, discovering that the one interrupting its meal was an ape spirit.
The ape spirit was larger than other monkeys, its fur a deeper shade, and its eyes sparkled with intelligence. As the giant snake looked over, the ape spirit grinned and raised its arms above its head, letting out a series of playful cries. This action further enraged the giant snake, prompting it to abandon the caterpillar and charge at the ape spirit, its massive body supported solely by its tail.
Seeing the giant snake coming, the ape spirit was startled and leaped to a nearby fruit tree, tossing a few more fruits at the snake mid-air.
The giant snake, having missed its target, coiled itself around the tree. Fortunately, the tree was large enough to support its weight. The snake, unfazed by the fruits hitting its body, remained focused on the ape spirit.
The ape spirit didn’t stop its assault, hurling dozens of fruits at the snake. Although the snake tried to dodge, many fruits still hit their mark, further fueling its fury. Its icy eyes locked onto the ape spirit.
Suddenly, the giant snake, which had been holding back, made its move. In the brief moment when the ape spirit paused between throws, the snake struck. This gap, insignificant to other beasts, was enough for the snake, a demon beast on the verge of transformation, to exploit.
The snake lunged again, faster than before, its cold eyes fixed on the ape spirit. As it opened its jaws, saliva dripping and fangs gleaming, the ape spirit was taken aback. In that instant, it felt as if it had already been bitten, blood gushing. Though it quickly regained composure, cold sweat covered its body, and the snake closed the distance rapidly.
With no time to dodge, the ape spirit could only scream and throw more fruits, all of which the snake ignored.
Just as the snake was about to reach the ape spirit, it abruptly halted, raising its head. A spine shot past, aimed precisely at the snake’s eye. To hit the snake’s eye with such precision while it moved so swiftly was no small feat. More astonishing was that the spine had come from the caterpillar, who, despite being bloodied and weak, had managed to launch such an attack. The snake glanced at the caterpillar, now wary of its opponent.
The ape spirit, recognizing the spine that had nearly ended its life, turned to the caterpillar. It saw the caterpillar looking back, its once bright red eyes dimmed, its breathing shallow, clearly on the brink of collapse.
The ape spirit let out a cry and, without hesitation, bounded over to the caterpillar. Fortunately, the old demon’s inheritance included a method for using sun and moon essence to heal. Without delay, the ape spirit placed its hands on the caterpillar, channeling its essence into it, following the inherited technique to aid in healing.
The caterpillar felt a warm current flow from the ape spirit’s hands into its body, spreading throughout. The warmth brought a tingling sensation, and its wounds began to heal. Its eyes regained their brightness, and life returned to its form.
The giant snake watched the ape spirit healing the caterpillar. With intelligence nearing that of humans, it quickly grasped the situation. Realizing that the seemingly insignificant monkey possessed a great demon’s inheritance, the snake’s eyes gleamed with greed. If it could seize this inheritance, its path to cultivation would be much smoother. Yet, it refrained from attacking, choosing instead to coil around the tree and observe.
Neither the caterpillar nor the ape spirit knew what the snake was planning. The ape spirit hadn’t anticipated that its actions would reveal its inheritance to the snake. But even if it had known, it wouldn’t have let the caterpillar die. The caterpillar had saved its life twice, and despite the initial attack, the ape spirit felt indebted. Regardless of the reason, it couldn’t stand by and let the caterpillar perish.
However, the caterpillar’s injuries were more severe than expected. The ape spirit’s limited essence was insufficient. Just stopping the bleeding had exhausted its reserves. If it stopped now, the vulnerable caterpillar would surely face another attack from the snake, rendering all efforts futile. This realization made the ape spirit anxious.
The caterpillar, sensing the ape spirit’s concern and the dwindling essence, understood the situation. Yet, it remained calm, knowing the ape spirit had done its best. Whether it would end up in the snake’s belly, it wouldn’t blame the ape spirit.
As the ape spirit fretted, it suddenly noticed the fiery sun in the sky. An idea struck, and it began to absorb sun essence, channeling it into the caterpillar. This not only revitalized the caterpillar but also caught the snake’s attention. Sensitive to temperature, the snake realized the ape spirit was absorbing as much essence as itself, despite being a novice in cultivation. This confirmed the snake’s suspicions.
This method wasn’t part of the inheritance; it was a spontaneous idea upon seeing the sun. To the ape spirit’s relief, it worked. Standing there, it continued to absorb essence and heal the caterpillar.
The old demon’s inheritance proved miraculous. Even a small amount of essence was effective in healing the caterpillar. With the ape spirit’s efforts and the caterpillar’s robust physique, honed over decades of cultivation, its wounds were soon no longer a concern.
Feeling its injuries were no longer critical, the caterpillar let out a roar. Beasts, even of different species, could communicate, and the ape spirit understood. It chirped in response, seeing the caterpillar nod, and ceased the healing.
The giant snake’s green eyes glowed faintly as it stared at the caterpillar, recognizing that its wounds had stabilized and it had regained some combat ability. Yet, the snake remained confident. The caterpillar couldn’t defeat it at full strength, let alone now, with its injuries. Even with the demon monkey, the snake was sure of its superiority.
The caterpillar had been watching the snake closely. Seeing its eyes gleam green again, it knew another battle was imminent. It bristled its spines, its eyes glowing red, and let out a low growl, signaling the ape spirit.
The ape spirit understood the danger hadn’t passed and turned to face the snake. Despite the snake’s injuries from its fight with the caterpillar, it couldn’t be underestimated. Together with the caterpillar, it prepared for the battle ahead.
