- Chapter 3 - Mixed Spiritual Roots
Spiritual Roots are classified into seven levels: Common Grade, Low Grade, Middle Grade, High Grade, Supreme Grade, Perfect, and Innate. The Innate Spiritual Root exists only in legends and has never been seen, so effectively, there are only six levels of Spiritual Roots.
Common Grade Spiritual Roots are considered the genius level among ordinary people but offer little hope for cultivation. Low Grade Spiritual Roots are the lowest among cultivators, and most cultivators fall into this category. They can embark on the path of cultivation, but their achievements are limited.
The Spirit Sword Sect’s minimum requirement for disciples is Low Grade Spiritual Roots, and these disciples often perform menial tasks as servant disciples. Middle Grade Spiritual Roots are significantly better than Low Grade, and with effort and good fortune, one might transcend the mundane.
The minimum standard for outer disciples of the Spirit Sword Sect is Middle Grade Spiritual Roots. High Grade Spiritual Roots are considered genius level among cultivators. Even without fortuitous encounters, with extraordinary effort, they can still achieve great things.
To become a direct disciple of the Spirit Sword Sect, one needs at least High Grade Spiritual Roots. Supreme Grade Spiritual Roots are rare, appearing once in a century, and those with such roots progress rapidly in cultivation.
Their spiritual power absorption rate is several times that of High Grade Spiritual Roots. Such disciples are often groomed as successors. Most Chief Elders of the Spirit Sword Sect’s peaks possess Supreme Grade Spiritual Roots.
The emergence of the Woman in Red Dress with Supreme Grade Fire Spiritual Root indeed astonished the elders. The Chief Elder of Lieyang Peak was the first to react. Standing up, he clasped his hands and smiled at everyone, saying, “Apologies, everyone, it seems Lieyang Peak will have another direct disciple.”
The sect master nodded with a smile, saying, “Congratulations, Junior Brother Qin, on acquiring such a promising talent. Be sure to nurture her well and not waste her potential.”
The Chief Elder of Lieyang Peak, in high spirits, grinned and said, “Rest assured, Senior Brother, I will teach her diligently upon our return.”
The sect master nodded slightly. The Chief Elder of Lieyang Peak beckoned to the Woman in Red Dress, saying, “From now on, you are a direct disciple of Lieyang Peak. What is your name?”
The Woman in Red Dress hurried forward to perform the disciple’s salute, “Disciple Chu Hongshang, greets Master.”
“Chu Hongshang?” The Chief Elder of Lieyang Peak murmured with a slight frown, “Hongshang… Hongshang… This name isn’t good.”
“You’re a lovely girl; why such a name? I don’t like it.”
“From today, you’ll be called Chu Hongyan.”
Chu Hongshang dared not refuse and quickly expressed her gratitude, “Thank you, Master, for the name!”
Seeing his disciple’s excellent aptitude and her obedience and manners, the Chief Elder of Lieyang Peak grew increasingly satisfied and said with a smile, “Rise and stand behind me.”
Chu Hongyan quickly rose and stood behind the Chief Elder of Lieyang Peak. The Chief Elder was delighted with such a prodigious disciple, and the other Chief Elders were envious.
Supreme Grade Spiritual Root disciples are rare and precious. Besides the sect master and a few Chief Elders, the Spirit Sword Sect has only four disciples with Supreme Grade Spiritual Roots.
The Spirit Sword Sect has seven peaks in total, averaging less than one Supreme Grade Spiritual Root disciple per peak.
Previously, Lieyang Peak already had a disciple with Supreme Grade Spiritual Roots, and now there was another one. It seemed that the strength of Lieyang Peak might soon surpass that of Longshou Peak, where the sect master resided. Although the other Chief Elders were envious, there was nothing they could do. After all, this Supreme Grade disciple had Fire Spiritual Roots, which were best suited to the techniques of either Longshou Peak or Lieyang Peak. Since the sect master of Longshou Peak didn’t contest for this disciple, she naturally belonged to Lieyang Peak.
Xiao Yun was getting eager among the crowd. After observing the tests of over a dozen people, he noticed a pattern. The Spirit Sword Sect recruited disciples based on their Spiritual Root Attributes. The five elements-Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth-corresponded to the Chief Elders of the various peaks. As long as the attributes matched, the disciples would be automatically assigned to the respective Chief Elder’s tutelage.
After several tests, it was clear that the sect master had no intention of accepting any disciples. Even when a Supreme Grade Fire Spiritual Root appeared, he remained unmoved. It seemed he wasn’t planning to take on any new disciples. Xiao Yun’s fantasy of having the Chief Elders compete for him as a disciple was unlikely to happen. But that was fine. Judging by the reaction of the Chief Elder of Lieyang Peak when the Supreme Grade Fire Spiritual Root appeared, as long as one’s aptitude was exceptional, they would still receive attention from the Chief Elders. If his aptitude turned out to be extraordinary, perhaps even surpassing the Supreme Grade with a Perfect Spiritual Root, could the sect master remain so indifferent?
With this thought, a slight smile crept onto Xiao Yun’s lips. When it’s my turn, I’ll surely leave them all in awe!
There was another matter that piqued Xiao Yun’s curiosity. Why was the Chief Elder’s chair empty, and why did the girl standing next to it seem so indifferent? Never mind, it’s not something to worry about right now.
The testing continued, and another ten disciples were evaluated. Two more Supreme Grade Spiritual Roots were discovered-one Metal and one Earth. Both were accepted as direct disciples. The atmosphere in the Main Hall grew tense with the appearance of these additional Supreme Grade Spiritual Roots. Excluding Longshou Peak and the absent elder’s empty chair, only Shuiyue Peak and Qingmu Peak had not received any Supreme Grade disciples. The expressions of the two Chief Elders from these peaks were noticeably uneasy. Everyone else had received Supreme Grade disciples, so naturally, they felt a bit disgruntled.
Now, only Xiao Yun remained untested, and the Chief Elders of Shuiyue Peak and Qingmu Peak watched him with eager anticipation. Xiao Yun felt a bit nervous under their gaze, but it was finally his turn. He wondered what kind of Supreme Grade Spiritual Root he would have. The Chief Elders of Qingmu Peak and Shuiyue Peak were even more anxious than he was, hoping fervently for a Supreme Grade Wood or Water Spiritual Root.
Taking a deep breath, Xiao Yun approached the Spirit Testing Stone and slowly placed his hand on it. In an instant, the stone turned a vibrant red, just like Chu Hongyan’s earlier. Xiao Yun’s heart leaped with joy: “Supreme Grade Fire Spiritual Root!” Before he could fully relish the moment, the stone’s color shifted to a lush green. Xiao Yun’s excitement grew: “Supreme Grade Wood Spiritual Root!” Wow, I’m actually a Dual Spiritual Roots holder!
But before he could celebrate, the color changed again to a golden yellow. “Whoa, Supreme Grade Earth Spiritual Root…” Xiao Yun was nearly bursting with excitement. And it wasn’t over yet; the stone then turned white, and finally, the color deepened into black. The five colors continued to shift and alternate.
“I actually have Five Elements Spiritual Roots! This is incredible! I must be the chosen one!” The other disciples who had already been tested looked on in shock. They couldn’t believe that the last person to be tested possessed all five Spiritual Roots. It was truly astonishing!
Xiao Yun withdrew his hand with a smug expression, his eyes meeting those of the sect master. His lips curled into a proud smile. The sect master remained silent for a long moment, then frowned slightly and said, “It turns out to be Mixed Spiritual Roots.”
