- Chapter 29 - Formations Are So Difficult
Hearing about the ability to quickly absorb spiritual power, Xiao Yun’s interest was piqued.
“Really? Is there something special about it?”
Wen Qing smiled as she explained, “Of course. Take Lieyang Peak, for instance. At noon, the fire spirit power there is at its peak.”
“Plus, with the spirit gathering formation at Lieyang Peak, cultivating there at noon for one hour is equivalent to a whole day’s worth of cultivation!”
“Is that so? If it’s really that amazing, I’d love to check it out.”
“Once you’ve chosen your cultivation techniques, I’ll take you to experience it.”
As they spoke, Wen Qing had already brought Xiao Yun to the Scripture Pavilion at Longshou Peak.
Wen Qing redeemed the IOU and spent three hundred spirit stones to buy two tokens.
One was for one hour, and the other for two hours.
She handed the two-hour token to Xiao Yun.
“You need to learn four cultivation techniques, and time is tight. One hour might not be enough, so stay a bit longer. Come on, I’ll help you pick the techniques.”
Xiao Yun and his Senior Sister entered the Scripture Pavilion once more.
Wen Qing wasn’t very familiar with techniques of other attributes.
So she didn’t actively help Xiao Yun choose but let him pick on his own, offering advice from the side.
After about fifteen minutes, Xiao Yun selected four basic cultivation techniques.
They were the Fiery Blaze Technique for the fire attribute, the Green Elixir Manual for the wood attribute, the Giant Spirit Technique for the earth attribute, and the Sword Classic for the metal attribute.
Xiao Yun’s goal was to absorb various attributes to temper his body during the Qi Refining stage.
Therefore, he chose techniques that focused more on body refinement.
It wasn’t that they didn’t want to choose more advanced techniques.
The Scripture Pavilion simply had a limited selection, with not many options available.
The Spirit Sword Sect’s techniques were usually taught by elders, and the Scripture Pavilion was primarily for learning Martial Skills.
Having so many techniques to choose from was already quite fortunate.
After helping Xiao Yun select the techniques, Wen Qing said, “Alright, Junior Brother, you’ve got your techniques. You have two hours to study them here, so take your time. I’ll wait for you outside the Scripture Pavilion.”
“Okay, Senior Sister.”
After leaving Xiao Yun, Wen Qing didn’t rush out. Instead, she went to the shelf with books on formations.
That morning, Xiao Yun had trapped her with a formation, and Wen Qing felt it was necessary to learn about them too.
This way, she wouldn’t be caught off guard by formation experts in the future.
Her Junior Brother had said that learning formations was simple, and with her intelligence, she was sure she could pick it up quickly.
Wen Qing was confident.
Her Junior Brother had managed to set up a formation after less than an hour in the Scripture Pavilion.
Surely, she wouldn’t be much worse.
Wen Qing didn’t set high expectations for herself; as long as she could match her Junior Brother’s level, she’d be satisfied.
After all, she was a formidable cultivator at the fifth layer of the Golden Core Realm. She couldn’t be worse than a novice Junior Brother, right?
Wen Qing found a book on formations and began to read it intently.
At first, she didn’t think much of it, but after a while, her brows furrowed.
“What do these words in the book mean? Why can’t I understand a single sentence?”
Wen Qing stared at the formation book in her hands, puzzled. She recognized every character, yet together they made no sense.
She placed the book back on the shelf. “This formation book must be too advanced. I’ll switch to something simpler, like the ‘Five Elements Mysterious Formation’ that Junior Brother learned.”
With this thought, Wen Qing found the ‘Five Elements Mysterious Formation’ on the shelf. But after reading just a few lines, her head felt like it was about to explode.
“What is all this?” she wondered. “Is this really the same formation that Junior Brother studied? Why does it seem so different from what he described? This isn’t simple at all!”
Determined, she continued reading, feeling as if she were deciphering an ancient script. Eventually, Wen Qing returned the ‘Five Elements Mysterious Formation’ to its place. She picked up three more books, but still couldn’t make sense of them.
A wave of frustration washed over her. Why was the formation that Junior Brother mastered so easily incomprehensible to her? It was far too difficult, not simple at all.
After struggling through six or seven formation books, Wen Qing decided to give up. It turned out Master was right; formations were obscure and challenging, not something just anyone could learn.
Despite being praised by Master for her exceptional talent, unmatched in a century, she felt utterly inadequate compared to Junior Brother.
Having abandoned formations, Wen Qing turned her attention to various martial skills in the Scripture Pavilion. Even if she didn’t learn them, she wanted to familiarize herself, as knowing one’s enemy is key to victory.
Meanwhile, Xiao Yun took the ‘Fiery Blaze Technique,’ ‘Green Elixir Manual,’ ‘Giant Spirit Technique,’ and ‘Sword Classic’ to a quiet corner to study. After about an hour, he had memorized all four cultivation techniques. Though not the Spirit Sword Sect’s own, they had their unique merits.
Returning the books to their places, Xiao Yun checked the time. He still had some left. He had paid to be here, so he couldn’t let it go to waste. Seizing the opportunity, Xiao Yun headed to the formation section and picked out a few books to study.
Only when the token’s red light began to glow did Xiao Yun reluctantly return the books. This time, he gained new insights into formations, planning to experiment back at Xiaozhu Peak.
Exiting the Scripture Pavilion, Xiao Yun immediately noticed Senior Sister meditating in a corner of the square. Her captivating presence drew the attention of many young disciples passing by. Some, bolder than others, even stopped to watch.
For reasons he couldn’t quite explain, seeing Senior Sister being ogled made him uncomfortable. He quickly approached a short and fat disciple who was watching and asked, “Hey, buddy, what are you looking at?”
Startled by the sudden question, the short and fat disciple turned to see Xiao Yun, a stranger, and relaxed. “New here, huh?” he said, adopting the demeanor of a Senior Brother.
“Yeah, just joined Spirit Sword Sect yesterday,” Xiao Yun replied with a smile.
“Well, you’re in luck. See that Junior Sister meditating over there? Isn’t she beautiful?”
Xiao Yun nodded, “I see her, she’s truly beautiful!”
“Her beauty has nothing to do with you. She’s one of the Four Great Disciples of our Spirit Sword Sect, Junior Sister Wen Qing from Xiaozhu Peak.”
“Don’t even think about reaching for something beyond your grasp.”
“Junior Sister Wen Qing possesses a Supreme Grade Ice Spiritual Root and is at the fifth layer of the Golden Core Realm! The male disciples who admire her could circle Longshou Peak three times!”
“She’s not someone an ordinary disciple like you can dream of. Just take a good look from afar and be content.”
“Really? So, Senior Brother, who do you think is worthy of Senior Sister Wen Qing?” Xiao Yun asked with a sarcastic smile.
“Isn’t it obvious? Of course, it’s me!” the short and fat disciple declared, puffing out his chest.
“Consider yourself lucky to see Junior Sister Wen Qing today; it’s a blessing from your past lives!”
“Let me tell you, Junior Sister Wen Qing stays on Xiaozhu Peak most of the time and rarely comes out. Do you know how hard it is to see her?”
“You might not believe it, but even I don’t get to see Junior Sister Wen Qing more than three times a year!”
“That’s really unfortunate,” Xiao Yun sighed.
“Yeah, it would be wonderful to be with Junior Sister Wen Qing day and night!” The short and fat disciple had a dreamy look on his face, as if imagining spending every moment with Wen Qing.
Xiao Yun sighed and said, “Senior Brother, I advise you not to indulge in such fantasies. Instead, use that time to lose some weight!”
He gently patted the short and fat disciple on the shoulder, shook his head, and walked towards Senior Sister Wen Qing.
The short and fat disciple was immediately alarmed, lowering his voice to call out to Xiao Yun, “Hey, what are you doing? Come back quickly, don’t disturb Junior Sister Wen Qing’s cultivation! If she leaves, who knows when you’ll see her again?”
