- Chapter 12 - The Greedy Little Wildcat
For dinner, Xiao Yun prepared four dishes and a soup: Steamed Spirit Fish, Spicy Shredded Chicken, Sweet and Sour Mushrooms, Braised Pork Ribs, and Snow Pear and White Fungus Soup. Although these weren’t particularly difficult dishes to make, Xiao Yun managed to cook them with the skill of a master chef.
Xiao Yun was quite particular about his food. Before his transmigration, he couldn’t stand the taste of takeout, so he cooked every meal himself, honing his culinary skills in the process.
This dinner was not without its little hiccups. Wen Qing, who had reached the Golden Core Realm, could technically practice Abstinence from Grains. However, having spent years on the mountain with her master, where entertainment was scarce, eating had become her greatest joy. After a long day of cultivation, her happiest moments were during meals, which had led to her little habit of being a foodie. Even at the Golden Core Realm, she hadn’t shaken off this habit.
Unfortunately, despite Yan Qinghui’s high cultivation level, her cooking skills left much to be desired, and Wen Qing had yet to taste anything truly delicious. Her favorite dish was Steamed Spirit Fish, which didn’t require much seasoning and was delicious when simply steamed.
When she saw Xiao Yun sprinkling various powders on the spirit fish, Wen Qing felt a pang of distress. Such a good fish, and he was ruining it with those seasonings! But out of respect for Xiao Yun, she didn’t interrupt his cooking, thinking to herself that she shouldn’t be picky; having fish to eat was already a treat.
However, when Xiao Yun finished cooking and brought out the fish, the aroma wafted into Wen Qing’s nose, nearly causing her to lose her composure and abandon her Senior Sister’s dignity to devour it right then and there. Fortunately, she managed to restrain herself with her remarkable willpower.
Wen Qing sat on the chair, her back straight as an arrow, her eyes fixed on the plate of Steamed Spirit Fish, with drool practically flowing like a river. “Junior Brother, you don’t need to make any more. Why don’t we eat the fish first? It won’t taste as good if it gets cold,” Wen Qing said, swallowing hard as she spoke to Xiao Yun, who was busy with the second dish.
Xiao Yun chuckled and replied, “I’m almost done, Senior Sister. If you’re hungry, you can start eating; you don’t have to wait for me.”
“That wouldn’t be right. You’ve worked so hard cooking, I can’t start before you sit down.” Wen Qing mustered all her strength to turn her head away, not daring to look at the plate of Steamed Spirit Fish for fear she might not be able to resist.
But while she could avoid looking, she couldn’t stop smelling it! The fish smelled so incredibly good, better than any fish she had ever tasted!
“Junior Brother, I’ll head back to my room for a bit and come back later.”
Xiao Yun, hearing Wen Qing’s words behind him, thought she was bored sitting there and replied, “Alright, Senior Sister. I’ll call you when it’s ready.”
Xiao Yun didn’t think much of it and continued cooking. When he finished the Braised Pork Ribs and brought them to the table, he noticed the Steamed Spirit Fish was missing. Not only was the fish gone, but the plate was missing too!
Just as Xiao Yun was wondering, Wen Qing walked in from outside, holding the empty plate that had once held the Steamed Spirit Fish.
Xiao Yun looked at Wen Qing with a puzzled expression.
Wen Qing’s eyes darted around, her expression a bit unnatural as she said, “Well… there was a little stray cat on the mountain. It looked so pitiful, like it hadn’t eaten in ages, so I took the liberty of giving it your fish. You won’t blame me, will you, Junior Brother?”
Seeing the oil stains still lingering at the corners of Wen Qing’s mouth, Xiao Yun didn’t expose her little fib. He simply smiled and said, “I didn’t expect Senior Sister to be such a compassionate person. It’s alright, three dishes and a soup are more than enough for the two of us.”
“Senior Sister, why don’t you try the Braised Pork Ribs I made?”
With that, Xiao Yun placed the Braised Pork Ribs on the table.
Wen Qing sniffed the air, her eyes immediately lighting up as she fixated on the dish.
“Junior Brother… um… can I… can I try it first?”
Wen Qing stammered for a while, ultimately unable to bring herself to say she would wait to eat with him.
Xiao Yun chuckled at her demeanor. “Of course, go ahead, Senior Sister. If you’re hungry, feel free to start without me.”
“That wouldn’t be right. We should eat together. I’ll just try one piece,” Wen Qing insisted firmly.
Xiao Yun smiled and said nothing more, turning to prepare another dish.
When the Sweet and Sour Mushrooms were ready, Xiao Yun turned around only to find that Senior Sister had vanished again!
And so had the plate of Braised Pork Ribs!
Just as Xiao Yun was wondering what happened, Wen Qing returned with an empty plate.
“Well… Junior Brother, I didn’t expect that little cat to have companions. It brought them along…”
“I thought I couldn’t favor one over the others, so I gave them the Braised Pork Ribs too. You won’t blame me, will you?”
Wen Qing lowered her head, her face flushed, clearly lacking confidence in her explanation.
Seeing the rib sauce still on her lips, what else could Xiao Yun do but forgive her?
Xiao Yun smiled gently and said, “Being compassionate is a good thing. How could I blame you, Senior Sister? I’m just worried that you’ll spoil those little cats, and they’ll keep coming to Xiaozhu Peak for food.”
“No… they wouldn’t… I’m sure they won’t do that.”
Xiao Yun waved his shiny kitchen knife playfully and said, “I hope not. But if I catch them, I promise they won’t come back. It’ll be a chance to treat you to some cat meat rice!”
“Heh… hehe, thank you for your kind offer, Junior Brother.”
Wen Qing laughed awkwardly, sneaking glances at Xiao Yun.
Strange… why is Junior Brother smiling so oddly? Could he have realized I ate the Steamed Spirit Fish and Braised Pork Ribs?
If that’s the case, I’ve really embarrassed myself as a Senior Sister.
“Senior Sister… try this dish…” Xiao Yun was about to offer the Sweet and Sour Mushrooms he had just made.
Before he could finish, Wen Qing quickly turned away, covering her nose to interrupt, “Junior Brother, you’ve worked hard. I’ll go chase away the stray cats on the mountain. Call me when you’re done.”
Without waiting for a response, she vanished from Xiao Yun’s sight in the blink of an eye.
Outside, Wen Qing took deep breaths, relieved. “Thank goodness I didn’t smell it, or I wouldn’t have been able to resist stealing another bite.”
“If I eat everything, Junior Brother won’t have anything left.”
“Wen Qing, you must hold back! Go back and cultivate!”
Back in her room, Wen Qing immediately sat down to meditate, trying to keep her mind off the recent events.
But no matter how long she sat, she couldn’t calm her thoughts. Her mind was filled with what delicious dishes Xiao Yun might make next and how they would taste.
After a while, Wen Qing couldn’t take it anymore and began pacing around her room.
Why hasn’t Junior Brother come to call me yet?
Did he forget about me?
Would it be inappropriate if I went to him instead?
Just as Wen Qing was anxiously pacing as if a thousand years had passed, there was finally a knock on her door.
“Senior Sister, are you in there? The meal is ready. We can eat now.”
Wen Qing immediately jumped onto her bed, sitting cross-legged with her eyes closed, pretending to be deep in meditation. “The door’s unlocked, Junior Brother. You can come in.”
Xiao Yun pushed the door open and saw Wen Qing meditating in her room. He smiled and said, “Senior Sister, dinner is ready. We can eat now.”
“Mm, no rush. I’ll finish my cultivation first,” Wen Qing replied softly, not hurrying.
“If Senior Sister is still cultivating, I’ll put the food back in the pot to keep it warm,” Xiao Yun said, about to leave.
Wen Qing quickly opened her eyes and said, “No need, I’m ready. Let’s eat.”
