- Chapter 1 - The Spirit Sword Sect's Recruitment
At the foot of the Spirit Sword Sect in the Eastern Divine Continent, a dense crowd stretched as far as the eye could see. Today marked the day when the Spirit Sword Sect opened its doors to recruit new disciples, an event that shook the entire Eastern Divine Continent. As one of the seven major cultivation sects, the recruitment by the Spirit Sword Sect was a matter of great importance.
There was a saying among the people: “Better to be a dog in the immortal mountains than an emperor among mortals.” This reflected the people’s yearning for the immortal sects.
Xiao Yun stood amidst the crowd, feeling an inexplicable sense of familiarity, reminiscent of squeezing into a subway in his past life. It had been over a year since his transmigration, yet the system had yet to make an appearance. With no other choice, Xiao Yun had to find his own way.
Upon hearing about the Spirit Sword Sect’s recruitment, Xiao Yun came immediately. He thought that with his unique status as a transmigrator, surely some elder would notice him, and he would become a direct disciple.
Xiao Yun never doubted his own aptitude. After all, since arriving in this world, he had managed to defeat the village martial artist after just a month of practicing boxing, a testament to his extraordinary talent. But martial arts were not Xiao Yun’s ultimate goal. This was a world of cultivation; what use was high martial prowess?
“Hey, could you be a bit gentler? At my age, I can’t handle this! The girl in front is already treating me like a creep!” Xiao Yun complained, turning to the girl who was persistently pushing against him with her chest.
Surrounded tightly by four girls, Xiao Yun found himself unable to move, his feet barely touching the ground. Moving on his own was impossible; he could only go with the flow, advancing at a snail’s pace of 0.003 meters per second.
The girl behind him, equally determined, glared at Xiao Yun and said, “It’s almost dark, and I need to become a disciple! If you’re not going to push, then step aside!”
Xiao Yun glanced at the sky; the sun was indeed setting in the west. Although there was still some time before nightfall, the endless sea of people ahead showed no sign of moving. At this rate, he wouldn’t get his turn even by the next morning.
Darn, he had been too caught up in reminiscing about the subway experience. How did time fly by so quickly? The Spirit Sword Sect’s recruitment couldn’t possibly last just one day, could it? As one of the seven strongest cultivation sects in the Eastern Divine Continent, missing this opportunity would mean losing the chance entirely.
Without further hesitation, Xiao Yun pushed forward against the girl in front of him with determination.
…
Halfway up the Spirit Sword Sect’s mountain, dozens of young men and women stood on a plaza. They were the ones who had passed the test and were selected by the Spirit Sword Sect. The Enforcement Elder looked down at the throng of people below, his brow furrowed.
Originally, the recruitment of disciples by the Spirit Sword Sect was a secretive affair, known only to the royalty and nobility of various nations. Somehow, the news had leaked, and now the entire Eastern Divine Continent knew about their recruitment.
This world never lacked geniuses; what it lacked were resources. Thus, the key to recruitment was quality, not quantity. With so many people coming to seek apprenticeship, the Spirit Sword Sect faced a significant challenge.
The Enforcement Elder, frowning, asked a young disciple beside him, “How many have passed the test?”
“Master, fifty-five have passed the test so far.”
“What are their qualifications?”
“Fifty have Low Grade Spiritual Roots, five have Middle Grade Spiritual Roots, and so far, none have been found with anything above Middle Grade.”
The Enforcement Elder sighed, retrieving a Jade Talisman from his robe and handing it to the disciple beside him. “Take my token to Longshou Peak and borrow Elder Qiao’s Xuantian Treasure Mirror. Tell him that there are too many people seeking apprenticeship, and we need the mirror to assess their qualifications.”
“Yes, I’ll go right away.”
…
At the foot of the mountain, Xiao Yun struggled mightily but still couldn’t break free from the crowd, trapped as he was between four persistent girls. Resigned, he decided to go with the flow.
Just as Xiao Yun was about to give up and enjoy the moment, a blinding white light suddenly illuminated the sky. A circular mirror hovered above, radiating the light that enveloped everyone at the mountain’s base.
The warmth of the light felt comforting on Xiao Yun’s skin, and others seemed to feel the same way. The crowd buzzed with chatter.
Standing on the mountainside, the Enforcement Elder activated the Xuantian Treasure Mirror, enveloping all those who had come to seek apprenticeship. He then called out, “Silence.”
His voice was commanding, like a thunderclap in their ears, and the noisy crowd fell silent.
The Enforcement Elder continued, “Cultivation is not only about destiny but also about qualifications. Your presence at the gate of the Spirit Sword Sect today is your destiny. Whether you can join us depends on your qualifications.”
“The Magic Treasure above, the Xuantian Treasure Mirror, can sense your affinity with spiritual power. Whatever happens next, do not panic. Stand still.”
“The Xuantian Treasure Mirror will select those with superior qualifications to become disciples of the Spirit Sword Sect.”
“Those not chosen by the mirror should not be discouraged. There are many paths to enlightenment, and you will find your own.”
“Now, focus your attention and feel the spiritual power the mirror bestows.”
As soon as the Enforcement Elder finished speaking, Xiao Yun felt the warmth intensify. He was then surrounded by an invisible force, lifting him gently off the ground.
Amidst the astonished gazes of those around him, Xiao Yun floated higher and higher, gradually ascending toward the mountainside of Spirit Sword Mountain.
In mid-air, Xiao Yun’s face lit up with joy. He had been chosen by the Xuantian Treasure Mirror. His exceptional talent was undeniable. Becoming a direct disciple was within reach!
Looking down at the upturned faces, mouths agape in surprise, Xiao Yun saw a mix of envy and jealousy.
Then, a thought struck him. If a girl in a skirt were to float up…
Just as this thought crossed his mind, a fiery red figure began to rise not far ahead. With a graceful figure and flowing hair, Xiao Yun’s eyes lit up. It was a girl! And she was wearing a red dress!
Eagerly, Xiao Yun focused intently on the girl in the red dress. He told himself he was merely verifying his hypothesis, not trying to peek.
If his suspicion was confirmed, he would report this oversight to the sect to fix the bug, he thought, eyes fixed on the girl as she floated higher.
As she rose, Xiao Yun noticed a cloud of white light beneath her feet, like a cloud covering her legs, concealing everything.
“Damn!” Xiao Yun cursed under his breath. “The Spirit Sword Sect thought of everything. I was overthinking it.”
