No Girl Can Walk Away Smiling After Checking Her Boyfriend's Phone - Chapter 5
Just as we were arguing, Jiang Ling’s phone rang again, very inopportunely.
A message popped up; it was from Zhou Xuan, asking if he had eaten.
Then another message followed:
“I bet you haven’t eaten yet. I’ve ordered you a portion of bone broth noodles, from the place I took you to last time.”
I stared blankly at the words, feeling as if a giant hand had gripped my heart tightly, tearing at it, making it almost impossible to breathe.
Actually, Jiang Ling didn’t particularly like noodles before.
When he was young, his family was poor. His father passed away early, and his mother worked far away, often leaving him alone at home, not even having enough to eat.
Back then, Jiang Ling was withdrawn and quiet, and the nearby kids didn’t like playing with him. Only I would often go to find him.
Once, I went to his house to bring him something. As soon as I entered, I saw him sitting on a long bench, head bowed, silently eating noodles. The broth was thin, without even a single green vegetable.
When he noticed me watching him, Jiang Ling seemed momentarily at a loss.
But he quickly gathered himself, as if nothing had happened, and continued eating.
I stared at his thin profile and suddenly felt very sad.
Perhaps, there was also a sense of shared plight.
My mother always longed for a son, but she injured herself during my birth, and the doctor said it would be difficult for her to conceive again.
So my mother always resented me.
During those hopeless and lonely days, Jiang Ling and I comforted and accompanied each other, slowly getting through it.
Until Jiang Ling graduated from middle school, his mother’s business succeeded, even making it to the financial news at the time, and then she took him away.
For a long time, I didn’t see him again until we met in college.
After we got together, I discovered Jiang Ling never ate noodles.
I could roughly guess the reason.
He didn’t want to recall those difficult times.
But recently, I’ve often seen him bring home bone broth noodles from the shop at the street corner.
At first, I jokingly asked him why he suddenly loved noodles.
He answered casually, “There’s no reason, just felt like eating.”
At that time, I was relieved, thinking he had truly moved on.
Turns out, it was because of her.
