Netherworld's Spirit Envoy - Chapter 109 - Too Deep into the Role
Mu Wanchen was a truly obedient girl, very compliant and somewhat timid. It was her restraint that stopped Qi Chuxin from causing too much trouble.
In this town, there was also a boys’ academy. The teachers of both academies were old friends, and after some discussion, they decided to have the students from the two schools compete to see whose students were more accomplished.
The competition began, and both Qi Chuxin and Mu Wanchen participated. It was during this event that they met a standout student from the boys’ academy, Chen Zike.
Chen Zike’s literary talent outshone the two girls, and his handsome looks left a deep impression on their hearts.
One evening, during a lantern festival, the two girls unexpectedly encountered Chen Zike. His charming demeanor deeply attracted them both. Mu Wanchen chose to keep her feelings hidden, while Qi Chuxin boldly declared her affection for Chen Zike.
As their encounters became more frequent, Qi Chuxin’s feelings grew more passionate, unaware that Chen Zike and Mu Wanchen had already secretly exchanged love letters and only had eyes for each other.
When Mu Wanchen and Chen Zike secretly met, Qi Chuxin eventually discovered them. She felt betrayed by both of them, especially by Mu Wanchen, who she realized had been deceiving her all along.
As Qin Wenwen’s voice filled the classroom, I was listening intently, when suddenly another voice interrupted my thoughts.
“Sir, something’s not right!” It was Lin Shishi’s voice. I snapped out of the story, about to ask a question, but I realized that speaking out would probably make me seem crazy to the others present.
Lin Shishi, aware of my predicament, continued, “I feel a chilling presence behind Qin Wenwen. I can’t confirm if it’s a ghost, but you need to be careful, Sir, as this classroom is not very safe.”
Quietly, I grasped Leilei’s hand. If anything felt off, I would run out with her without a second thought. Right now, Leilei was the most important thing to me.
Leilei glanced back at me. I didn’t notice at first, but when I sensed something was amiss, she had already looked away.
Furious, Qi Chuxin accused Mu Wanchen of being a liar, deceiving her and betraying their friendship of over a decade. She felt Mu Wanchen had exploited her trust to steal Chen Zike’s affection and even suspected that their accidental meeting was a setup orchestrated by Mu Wanchen.
Mu Wanchen wanted to explain herself, but Qi Chuxin wouldn’t listen and only kept blaming her. Chen Zike, unable to bear it any longer, stepped in to criticize Qi Chuxin, but she slapped him hard.
Qi Chuxin didn’t hate Chen Zike but instead blamed everything on Mu Wanchen. Mu Wanchen already felt guilty towards Qi Chuxin, and overwhelmed by remorse and self-blame, she took advantage of the moment when Chen Zike and Qi Chuxin were arguing, and jumped out of the window, shattering herself to pieces.
It was a tragic story. As I listened quietly, I gradually sensed something was wrong. Qin Wenwen’s appearance seemed to change, but I couldn’t pinpoint exactly what it was.
Qin Wenwen suddenly gave me an eerie smile, causing my heart to skip a beat. It was then that I finally realized something was amiss, but by that time, I found that I couldn’t move at all.
Not only my body, but I couldn’t even open my mouth or move my eyes.
Qin Wenwen had originally worn a ponytail, but now, all her hair was hanging down, covering half her face. All that was visible was a ghostly pale face and pitch-black, shiny eyes, giving her a terrifying appearance. Even her clothes had turned into a dark red color, continuously saturating as if her body was bleeding and staining the fabric.
Chen Zike blamed Mu Wanchen’s death on Qi Chuxin. If she hadn’t constantly accused Mu Wanchen, Mu wouldn’t have been driven by her conscience to commit suicide.
On the night of Mu Wanchen’s memorial, Qi Chuxin invited Chen Zike to the place where she had jumped. It was a location filled with Chen Zike’s beautiful memories and his most sorrowful ones.
When Chen Zike arrived, Qi Chuxin was already wearing a bright red dress. Her long hair fell freely behind her, and she faced the open window, letting the fierce wind blow her dress and hair.
“Qi Chuxin, what are you doing?” Chen Zike sensed something was wrong and shouted loudly.
“Hahaha, Chen Zike, tell me, do you like me or Mu Wanchen?” Qi Chuxin seemed to have gone mad, continuously asking the question, but Chen Zike remained silent, not saying a word.
Qi Chuxin turned her head around, startling Chen Zike. Her eyes had become two black holes, with blood continuously flowing down. Qi Chuxin’s eyes were gone.
“You, how did you end up like this?” Chen Zike, realizing things were wrong, started slowly moving toward the door.
With a bang, the door suddenly slammed shut due to the wind, and no matter how hard Chen Zike tried, he couldn’t open it.
Qi Chuxin laughed maniacally again, with blood still dripping down her face, making her look menacing and terrifying.
“Twenty-one days now, and during all these days, I keep seeing and hearing Mu Wanchen after her death. She keeps asking me why I pushed her, why I forced her!”
Qi Chuxin screamed, her hollow eye sockets glaring at Chen Zike. “Tell me, I just need this one answer: do you love me, or do you love Mu Wanchen?”
It turned out that Chen Zike was indeed a fickle person, enjoying the attention between Mu Wanchen and Qi Chuxin. He never expected that Mu Wanchen, seemingly gentle, would have such a fierce nature to jump to her death.
These days had been torturous for him, but he didn’t realize Qi Chuxin was enduring the same agony. In truth, Chen Zike loved neither of them.
Suddenly, two ghostly pale hands stretched in from the window behind Qi Chuxin. They grabbed Qi Chuxin’s trouser legs and slowly crawled upwards, revealing themselves to be Mu Wanchen, broken and shattered.
Mu Wanchen’s face was half collapsed and mangled, one eye dangling out, and her left hand was twisted at an impossible angle. Even her neck was crooked, feet angled unnaturally inward, and her left foot was completely severed at the ankle, held together by just a thread of skin.
Qi Chuxin wore red, while Mu Wanchen wore a white dress stained with star-like blood spots. Their hair, both long and loose, tangled together inseparably.
“We were both deceived by him,” Qi Chuxin spoke, but the voice was Mu Wanchen’s.
Chen Zike was terrified, kneeling and begging desperately, but to no avail. He watched helplessly as the two girls he had deceived crawled toward him, pulling him with them out of the window.
Qin Wenwen paused, her mouth curling into a smile as she glanced around at everyone. After a moment, everyone exhaled slowly. Listening to a ghost story in this atmosphere was indeed spine-chilling.
Just as everyone relaxed, Qin Wenwen suddenly laughed again. “Do you think the story ends there? Chen Zike’s fate is not yet finished.”
Everyone’s nerves tightened once more. All eyes were on Qin Wenwen, anticipating the next part of the story.
“Aren’t you curious how I know about all of this?” Qin Wenwen smiled, her gaze flickering over each person’s face. Her strange eyes made everyone’s heart clench tightly.
Gradually, the smile on Qin Wenwen’s face froze. It was at that moment that I suddenly threw my hand out in front of Leilei, shouting loudly, “Don’t look!”
But as I covered Leilei’s eyes, I found myself staring directly at Qin Wenwen.
Qin Wenwen’s face transformed into that of Chen Zike. His entire body was covered in claw-like scratches, and his face was marked with bloody streaks. His eyes were wide open in terror, bulging as if they might pop out, with bloodshot veins crisscrossing the whites. His mouth was agape, seemingly trying to scream, but inside was not a tongue-it was the head of a woman bearing an eerie smile.
Yes, it was a woman’s head, but I couldn’t discern if it was Qi Chuxin or Mu Wanchen. As soon as I saw her, I felt my heart stop, my body frozen, unable to move.
“What are you doing?” Leilei, impatient, brushed my hand away. When she saw Chen Zike’s face, she completely broke down, and her scream pierced the air, jolting us all back to reality.
I quickly shielded Leilei behind me, pulling her backward in a rush. “Everyone spread out! Don’t touch him, just spread out quickly,” I urged, panic in my voice.
These precautions were what Lin Shishi had taught me. I hadn’t anticipated encountering something like this and could only focus on protecting Leilei, unsure of what to do next.
Some of the more timid girls were already paralyzed with fear, their legs unable to support them, frozen in place.
“Go save her!” Leilei, having been through some experiences, snapped back to reality and urged me on.
Honestly, to say I wasn’t scared would be a lie, but I was the only one who could hold the situation even for a moment. This was my chance to step up.
“Be careful,” I told Leilei, not even glancing at Chen Zike, as I dashed towards the terrified girl. Grabbing her hand, I pulled her toward where Leilei stood, only to see Leilei’s eyes wide with shock, unable to speak, pointing at me frantically.
“I’m fine, don’t worry!” I tried to reassure her as I stood before her, but Leilei was still frozen, speechless.
It was then that I realized the hand I was holding was rough, or rather, the knuckles were large, with prominent veins-a hand that belonged not to a girl, but decidedly wasn’t one.
