Netherworld's Spirit Envoy - Chapter 107 - Rescuing Leilei
The Foot Spirit stood still while I curled up inside its body like a baby, staring blankly as the Dry Jiangshi frantically tore away at the Foot Spirit’s collagen on its head, yet the Foot Spirit seemed completely unaffected.
“Are you really okay?” I asked, looking up at the Foot Spirit curiously.
The Foot Spirit had a rather smug look in its eyes, “Of course I’m fine, Master. I can never die.”
Well, then. I finally voiced the thought that had been stuck in my mind, “Then quickly find a way to pull out that old thing’s tooth. I need to hurry and rescue Lin Zhe!”
Was this Foot Spirit not serious at all? Why didn’t it show even a hint of urgency, despite knowing why I was here? After waiting for so long, it suddenly reached out and effortlessly pulled out the Dry Jiangshi’s tooth.
“Master, is this what you meant?” The one-meter-long tooth even dripped with black poison as the Foot Spirit looked at me innocently, seemingly confused.
I quickly nodded, “Yes, that’s the one!”
Seeing my happiness made the Foot Spirit even happier, “I’ll give you more, then.”
Finally, with a handful of the black fangs given to me by the Foot Spirit, I hurried back to where Lin Zhe was. Fortunately, he seemed unharmed.
I ground the fangs into powder, painfully bit my finger to draw some blood, dripped a few drops onto it, and then fed the mixture to Lin Zhe.
In just a few minutes, I watched his complexion change from pale to black, to a dull lifeless white, and then suddenly a bizarre red appeared. After sweating profusely, his face finally returned to a normal color.
“What happened to me?” Lin Zhe asked, sitting up drenched, as if he’d been pulled out of water.
I was too exhausted to explain and waved my hand, “Go find Leilei, rescuing her is urgent.”
Since the Yang Calamity Spirit and Foot Spirit were still useful to us, I had them follow me. With their help, the Dry Jiangshi posed no threat.
As for the Ghost Face, it seemed to have been vanquished by the Yang Calamity Spirit. I only heard a horrifying scream, but it was like several voices overlapping at different times, chaotically crashing into my ears and making me uneasy.
Lin Zhe’s face looked even worse; just recovered from serious injury and now going through this ordeal was like adding fuel to the fire.
Have the Yang Calamity Spirit lead the way, with the Foot Spirit bringing up the rear. We felt much safer positioned in the middle. However, the further we ventured in, the wider the passage became. By the time the four of us could advance side by side, a bone-chilling wind was already sweeping through the corridor.
“So, where are you taking us?” I finally asked, unable to keep up any longer. My foot was still injured, and the Foot Spirit was bouncing ahead, covering nearly a meter with each step. Lin Zhe and I struggled to keep pace with it.
“Master, that thing is just up ahead waiting for you, so you’d better be prepared.” The Foot Spirit still looked at me with an innocent face, though its appearance was truly unpleasant to look at.
I’ve always suspected that something was off with this Foot Spirit, which might be why it ended up in the Yin-Yang Notebook-to prevent it from causing more trouble for others.
“I am your Master; you need to protect me and not make sarcastic remarks!” This Foot Spirit just doesn’t understand the concept of having a Master unless you show it who’s boss.
The Foot Spirit was momentarily stunned and then looked at the Yang Calamity Spirit, “You see, our Master’s angry face is quite amusing, isn’t it?”
The Yang Calamity Spirit was slender and straight like a pole, while the Foot Spirit was more like a big, stout fellow, highlighting the stark contrast in their personalities.
“Foot Spirit, don’t forget that you were captured for talking too much in the first place, unless you want to be stuck in the notebook for another five hundred years,” the Yang Calamity Spirit said calmly, causing the Foot Spirit’s expression to change drastically as it instantly quieted down.
Reaching the end of the passage, we indeed saw two lantern-sized eyes staring intently at us.
As we cautiously moved forward, a black cat the size of an adult’s fist appeared. Its eyes were bright yellow, and it was leisurely licking its paws, not even sparing us a glance.
Supporting Lin Zhe, I stood there as the Foot Spirit and Yang Calamity Spirit came to the forefront. I heard the Yang Calamity Spirit’s voice say, “Master, the girl is just behind this cat demon, but none of us are a match for it. You must be prepared.”
What?! Not a match for it? Then why am I even here? Lin Zhe is of no help now, and I’m here alone, unprepared. Isn’t this a suicide mission?
“You two go ahead, and I’ll figure something out.” After placing Lin Zhe in a safe spot, I immediately turned to the Yin-Yang Notebook.
The Yin-Yang Notebook greeted me with a respectful bow and said, “Master, this cat demon is quite formidable. However, it was injured from a previous encounter with that Ghost Woman, so I do have demons that can handle such creatures, but…”
At this point, the Yin-Yang Notebook hesitated, so I quickly urged it, “No more delays, just tell me.”
“Whether it will obey depends entirely on you, Master. It was very reluctant to be captured by you back then,” the Yin-Yang Notebook explained. As it finished speaking, a puff of white smoke rose, and I saw the creature.
Immediately, I felt like the Yin-Yang Notebook was playing another joke on me. It was a golden-furred rat, almost as tall as a person, with eyes like black beads and twitching whiskers that made it look quite adorable.
“Go deal with the demon outside for me,” I commanded sternly, recalling my experience with the Foot Spirit. I knew maintaining a serious demeanor was key to keeping them in check.
The rat gave me a defiant look, “Aren’t you supposed to be very powerful? Why don’t you go instead?”
I didn’t want to reveal my true limits. “That’s an order from me. Do you dare defy it?”
The Golden-Furred Rat seemed to hesitate for a moment. Seizing the opportunity, I continued, “I know you were unwilling back then, but you’re no match for me now. I’ve left that opponent outside just for you. If you defeat it, I’ll give you a chance to redeem yourself in the future!”
Hearing my promise, the Golden-Furred Rat’s eyes immediately lit up. “Really?”
I nodded firmly, “Absolutely!”
After receiving my assurance, the Golden-Furred Rat followed me outside. However, upon seeing the black cat, it was so scared that it tried to hide behind me.
“Get out there now!” I urged it.
The rat glared at me, “Are you messing with me on purpose? Don’t you know cats are rats’ natural enemies?”
Considering their size difference, I thought the Golden-Furred Rat would easily take down the black cat, but I hadn’t expected it to tremble behind me in fear.
“Stop wasting time! Don’t you want a chance to defeat me?” There was no more time to lose. The Foot Spirit and Yang Calamity Spirit were hardly a match for the black cat, merely using illusions to spar with it.
Hearing my words, the Golden-Furred Rat steeled itself, “You better keep your promise!”
When the Golden-Furred Rat charged forward, the Foot Spirit and Yang Calamity Spirit pulled back and were drawn into the Yin-Yang Notebook. However, in its battle with the black cat, the Golden-Furred Rat didn’t gain much advantage.
The black cat was agile, and although the Golden-Furred Rat had a size advantage, both sides were at a standstill. The black cat let out a series of menacing cries, but the Golden-Furred Rat showed no sign of backing down, with the golden fur on its back standing upright like silver needles.
When the black cat leapt into the air, the Golden-Furred Rat’s fur shot out, forcing the black cat to dodge continuously. The rat aligned its back towards the cat, not daring to relax for a moment.
I stood behind the Golden-Furred Rat, anxiously watching, unaware that my own position was somewhat dangerous. The black cat suddenly jumped onto the stone wall and charged towards the Golden-Furred Rat. Its fur shot even more swiftly, but always a step too slow. By the time I realized the cat’s real target was me, the rat’s fur was already aimed in my direction.
With no time to evade, I could only roll on the ground, pressing myself against it as I rolled towards a corner. The Golden-Furred Rat, however, leapt up and shielded me, sparing me from harm.
“Don’t get in my way!” the Golden-Furred Rat scoffed. Despite its cute appearance, its personality didn’t match, even showing disdain for me, its Master.
I had no choice but to retreat to Lin Zhe’s side, watching the battle quietly. By this time, Lin Zhe had passed out from exhaustion.
The clever black cat kept trying to jump onto the Golden-Furred Rat’s back to attack. The rat seemed to understand its aim and pretended to expose a weakness. When the black cat finally landed on its back, the rat’s fur turned into sharp spikes. Although the cat reacted quickly, its paws were pierced and began to bleed, preventing it from regaining its footing.
In their final showdown, the injured black cat grew weaker, while the Golden-Furred Rat fought with increasing vigor. The outcome was soon clear.
When the black cat lay on the ground, barely clinging to life, the Golden-Furred Rat strutted proudly up to me, demanding a duel.
I was startled and pretended to be injured, saying with a weary face, “I’m really exhausted, now isn’t the time. Once I recover, I’ll definitely summon you for a duel.”
This aspect of the Golden-Furred Rat was rather convenient; it seemed incapable of discerning whether a human was lying. Honestly, when it obediently returned to the Yin-Yang Notebook, I was filled with a deep sense of guilt.
Deceiving a fool is just wrong, in the end.
