Netherworld's Spirit Envoy - Chapter 103 - Walking the Road of No Return Again
What surprised me the most was that Leilei’s class president, Li Yuanyuan, came to see me as well, though I really couldn’t muster any energy.
She sat there, so plump that her body was like a mass of flesh; it was hard to look directly at her.
When Leilei appeared in front of me again with Lin Zhe, I couldn’t hold back anymore. I knew they couldn’t hear me, so I spoke without restraint.
“Leilei, next time you can’t come with Lin Zhe. This guy has bad intentions. Be careful he doesn’t deceive you. Only I can take good care of you.”
Leilei and Lin Zhe both looked at me with astonished faces as if they heard my voice, but how could that be possible? I’m not in the same world as them anymore.
Leilei ran out, and Lin Zhe chased after her. I was secretly delighted. Could it be that my will reached Leilei’s ears? Has my dream come true?
I wasn’t sure what was going on, but later on, neither Leilei nor Lin Zhe appeared. Instead, a large group of doctors came in and started bustling around me.
They took off my clothes, blew some cold air at me, and even pinched me. For the dignity of a vegetative patient, I didn’t make a sound.
A doctor came up close and asked me questions. I saw his mouth moving, but I couldn’t hear any sound.
He was so ugly that it affected my vision, so I didn’t really see him, just blankly stared at the ceiling.
“I’m already dead, so stop insulting my eyes. You’re too ugly to talk to me. Please respect the last dignity of a vegetative person, okay?” Those were my words, spoken with my soul.
I felt my foot was heavily placed on the bed. They are truly all style and no substance; without any family around, they treat me like this, but my foot really did hurt as if it was swollen.
After a while, Lin Zhe and Leilei appeared in front of me together. The two exchanged a look and suddenly reached over, busying themselves in front of me.
I saw strips of what looked like gauze being thrown out continuously in front of me, and the heaviness in my head suddenly lifted a lot. Then, my head was heavily placed onto the pillow.
Leilei looked at me with her hands on her hips, while Lin Zhe crossed his arms, as if waiting to watch a show.
“Don’t look at me like that. I’ve become a vegetative person already. What more do you want? Fine, do whatever you want. I’m so tired. King Yama is calling me, letting me say goodbye to this world.”
After stating my final will, I slowly closed my eyes.
“Li Xiaofei, open your eyes!” Leilei’s voice suddenly reached my ears, and I instantly opened my eyes, looking at her in disbelief. “Leilei, I… I can hear now? Your charm is incredible; you actually pulled me back from King Yama’s grasp.”
Leilei promptly slapped me. “Stop talking nonsense…”
Alright, here’s how it all began.
Half a month ago, Lin Zhe and Leilei were awakened from their sleep by a phone ringing. The caller claimed to be a medical staff member at the hospital, and the owner of this phone, me, Li Xiaofei, had been hit by a car on the street.
The two of them hurried to the hospital and saw me wrapped entirely in gauze-head to toe! So, I was unable to move, speak, or listen.
I didn’t have any severe injuries from the impact, but I did have quite a few abrasions on the surface, which got me wrapped up like a zongzi. However, my body’s functions all shut down on their own, and I could only rely on machines to breathe and keep my heart beating. At that time, Lin Zhe and Leilei thought I wouldn’t survive.
Yet somehow, I didn’t die, because my eyes could still move-an occurrence even the doctors couldn’t explain.
When I spoke that sentence to Lin Zhe and Leilei, they were all shocked, utterly unable to believe their ears, which led them to call all the doctors in.
So, they unwrapped all the gauze binding me, though my head still had gauze on, which is why when I said that doctor was ugly, everyone heard it.
Now it’s too late to take it back; I didn’t want to stay in the hospital a minute longer. After completing all the tests, I didn’t even wait for the results. I asked Lin Zhe and Leilei to take me home that very night.
Lying on the sofa, with Leilei cooking for me in the kitchen and Lin Zhe tidying up my things, I was finally full and satisfied. Then, the two began to press me on what had actually happened.
According to the truck driver’s account, I suddenly appeared in the middle of the road, swaying as if I were drunk. He honked multiple times, yet I didn’t react at all, and even deliberately walked toward his truck.
That’s right, I crashed into the truck myself, and after the accident investigation, it was determined to be entirely my fault.
However, I ordinarily don’t drink, and that night, I only had one bottle of beer-how could I have been drunk?
I recounted my experience on that road, and even Leilei felt there was something off about it.
The three of us discussed and decided that once my injuries were mostly healed, we’d head back to that road of no return. That’s the name the locals gave it, quite fitting, and I had become something of a celebrity because I was the only one who survived walking that road at night.
So, when I went outside, people looked at me with strange eyes, as if it was abnormal for me to be alive.
On the night when my test results came out, the three of us set off again. All my wounds had scabbed over, only itching occasionally, which wasn’t too uncomfortable.
To find out what was really going on, Lin Zhe and Leilei decided that I should drink two bottles of beer and walk that road of no return again.
Everything was identical to last time. Out of nowhere, the sound of a cat meowing began once more, more hurried this time, carrying a tone of threat.
I stood there, closed my eyes, and listened closely to the source of the meowing. This time, I was determined to see it.
When the cat’s call sounded for the fourth time, I suddenly opened my eyes and looked to my left rear. There, a pair of round eyes resembling night pearls were staring at me. The moment our eyes met, I suddenly felt it smiled at me.
That’s right, I clearly saw a pair of sharp fangs appear, then slowly enlarging as they got closer and closer to me.
“Oh, crap, a cat monster!” I snapped to my senses just as the cat lunged at me, quickly rolling to the side to dodge its sharp fangs.
Having missed its mark, the cat monster swiftly turned around in mid-air and lunged at me again. I quickly rolled on the ground once more to evade it.
At this point, I regretted not asking Lin Zhe to prepare a protective charm for me, or an invisibility charm would have been fine too. Fighting this cat monster was entirely out of my league.
The cat monster was agile, and in the dark, there wasn’t a glimmer of light. I could only pinpoint its location because of its night pearl-like eyes. Once it moved, I couldn’t see a thing.
Stalemated with the cat monster, Lin Zhe and Leilei were nowhere to be found. They probably didn’t see the cat monster’s moves, as I could feel that I was no longer on the road.
Either this was a bewitching formation, or it was a Ghost Wall.
As we reached a deadlock, the cat monster suddenly opened its mouth wide towards me, emitting an extremely threatening roar. I froze immediately, too terrified to move a muscle.
Is it about to attack? I stared at it, too afraid to make the first move. I had no choice but to stay put, prepared-if it didn’t move, then neither would I.
Sure enough, the cat monster arched its back, signaling it was about to strike.
When it charged, I swiftly dodged aside, only to see it pounce not at me, but toward the shadowy figure behind where I had been standing. It was fighting with the Shadow.
The Shadow appeared humanoid, and the cat monster’s cries grew increasingly terrifying, each threatening call sending chills down my spine.
I could only hear the cat’s cries; the Shadow made no sound at all. I stood there, unsure whether to escape, stay put, or even intervene, clueless about whom I should help.
Were they enemies or allies? I decided to just observe and wait.
Soon enough, a tuft of fur floated down-it seemed the cat was at a disadvantage.
After a pained yowl, the cat suddenly leaped away, landing at a distance. Its fur stood on end, and it kept yowling at the Shadow, clearly unwilling to back down. A patch of fur on its back was missing, and its leg seemed injured, as one foreleg barely touched the ground.
They were at a standstill for a while until the cat, seemingly startled, sprang up suddenly and fled at lightning speed.
I was about to laugh at its retreating figure when I suddenly felt a chilling sensation along my back, similar to the cold air from an air conditioner blowing directly on my neck.
That’s when I realized-the Shadow hadn’t left. Now, I was its prey, or perhaps it was my savior.
It was right behind me. Though it made no move, the cold permeated me, and saying I wasn’t scared would be a lie. Yet, it neither revealed itself nor harmed me. What was it planning?
Did it want me to turn around and look? I didn’t have the guts for that.
Swallowing hard, I felt a cold sweat trickle down my forehead. The silence, the tension, made my scalp tingle with fear.
