Mysterious Revival - Chapter 5 - Lost
Zhou Zheng’s shout woke everyone in the classroom.
Although they were all stunned by the sudden turn of events, the instinct to survive is inherent in every living being.
“Follow me if you want to live.”
Fang Jing was the first to shout, then he dashed out at an incredible speed, heading straight for the back door of the classroom.
They were on the fifth floor, and to leave the school, they had to go downstairs. If they were on the second or first floor, he would have jumped out of the window without hesitation.
But jumping from the fifth floor would be no different from suicide.
Fang Jing’s escape move was highly motivating, and the others, reacting almost instinctively, followed him out of the classroom.
Yang Jian didn’t hesitate either and left immediately.
He had a premonition that Zhou Zheng might not be able to hold off the Old Man for long.
“Boom…”
The previously weathered floor collapsed under the weight of so many people, and several classmates fell through.
“Zhang Wei, Miao Xiaoshan.”
Yang Jian was startled and quickly detoured around the collapsed area.
“Phew, I’m fine. Damn it, who pushed me just now? I’m going to sue them for attempted murder.” Zhang Wei rubbed his butt, wincing in pain.
Fortunately, they only fell to the classroom below, a height of about three meters, which wasn’t fatal.
But when Zhang Wei turned to look at the others who had fallen, his eyelids twitched.
One person lay on the ground, eyes wide open, blood gushing from her neck, making gurgling sounds as if she wasn’t quite dead yet. Yang Jian saw a blood-stained steel rod piercing through her neck.
It was Su Lei!
She was a top student in the class and quite beautiful, with many suitors from outside the school. Who would have thought she would meet with such an accident?
With such severe injuries, calling an ambulance would be too late, not to mention the current situation.
“Get up and leave here quickly, don’t waste any time.”
Yang Jian shouted, then immediately left, not bothering to care for others.
“Yang Jian, even without you saying it, I would leave this damn place… Damn, you’re already running away. Don’t expect me to lend you any movies in the future.” Zhang Wei cursed.
At this moment, the group of students was like a pack of madmen, rushing out of the classroom and down the stairs.
“Can we leave here safely?”
Yang Jian was filled with unease, the image of the Old Man in the black long robe, covered in postmortem lividity, lingering in his mind.
If the Old Man was really a ghost, could Zhou Zheng handle it?
He had also said it-ghosts cannot be killed.
The only thing that can deal with a ghost is another ghost.
Wait… could Zhou Zheng also be a ghost?
In an instant, Yang Jian felt a chill run down his spine, his scalp tingling with fear.
Had he just been listening to a ghost lecture?
What on earth was happening to this world?
Yet, outside in the hallway, Zhou Zheng was still doing his best to hold back the old man, preventing him from using the ghost domain again.
Once the ghost domain reappeared, any students still trapped within it-even if they left the classroom-would never make it out alive.
But the terror of the old man in the black robe had exceeded Zhou Zheng’s expectations. How long he could hold on, he had no idea.
Meanwhile, the group of students was frantically rushing down the stairs like a pack of startled rabbits.
First floor, second floor, third floor…
It seemed like hope of escape was just within reach.
But just as Fang Jing reached the corner of the staircase, a faint sizzling sound suddenly echoed, and the lights in the stairwell instantly went out, plunging the entire space into darkness.
The darkness was so thick that they couldn’t even see their own hands in front of their faces. Through the windows, not a single glimmer of light could be seen.
“Ahhh!”
As the lights went out, a female classmate screamed in terror.
“Damn it, has Zhou Zheng reached his limit? Has the ghost domain returned? What level of ghost is that old man? He’s truly terrifying.”
Sweat dripped down Fang Jing’s face. In the darkness, he didn’t dare linger. He turned and shouted, “Keep moving! Don’t stop!”
He didn’t actually want to save these people, but he couldn’t let them die within the ghost domain.
Otherwise, the ghost domain would become even more horrifying.
Navigating the stairs in the dark wasn’t difficult for them, as they were familiar with the layout.
But as they continued downward, Fang Jing suddenly stopped in his tracks. Something felt off.
It wasn’t just him-Yang Jian, behind him, also sensed something wrong. His body tensed as he realized they had already descended more than five floors… and there were still more stairs ahead.
“Everyone, stop. Don’t go any further.”
When Fang Jing stopped, the others instinctively followed suit.
In this situation, Fang Jing, who was full of mysteries and relatively calm, seemed to have become the group’s de facto leader.
“Fang Jing, what’s wrong? Why aren’t we moving?” a girl asked, her voice trembling.
“If you’re not going, I will. I don’t want to stay here and wait for death.”
One of the boys, driven by fear, continued forward and soon disappeared into the darkness.
“Fang Jing, don’t mess around like this. People could die.”
Others stopped, their voices breaking with panic.
“Are you kidding me? From the fifth floor to here, haven’t you counted how many flights of stairs we’ve gone down?” Fang Jing shouted angrily.
“Who’s going to count when we’re running for our lives?”
In the chaos of escape, it’s true that no one would keep track of such details. Not everyone has a calm mind in situations like this.
At this moment, Yang Jian spoke up after a moment of silence: “Before the lights went out, we had already reached the third floor and were heading to the second and a half floor. We should have been able to get out by going down one more floor. But since the lights went out, we’ve gone down at least three, maybe even four floors. In other words, we’re underground now.”
“But this teaching building doesn’t have a basement.”
“Damn it, Yang Jian, don’t say such terrifying things. What kind of situation is this?” someone replied in the darkness.
“So what do we do now? Keep going or not?”
“Maybe we should try going down a few more floors? Maybe Yang Jian miscalculated.”
As they were discussing, a faint light suddenly appeared in the darkness. It was a female classmate trembling as she turned on her phone’s flashlight.
The phone still worked?
Seeing this, everyone was overjoyed and quickly pulled out their phones to turn on their flashlights.
Immediately, more than a dozen lights lit up, but compared to the number of people in the class, it was far too few. Had the others already gotten separated?
What’s more, the light wasn’t as bright as usual, as if it was being pushed back by the surrounding darkness, only illuminating a spot less than a meter ahead.
Beyond that was a thick, ink-like darkness.
This oppressive darkness made it almost impossible to breathe, as if they could get lost in it at any moment.
“Keep moving forward.”
Fang Jing gritted his teeth. He had no other choice.
This wasn’t something that could be dealt with by individual strength. All they could do was pray that Zhou Zheng wasn’t dead yet and could hold off that ghost a little longer, destroying this ghost domain.
Otherwise… everyone might be forever lost in this ghost domain, never able to escape.
They continued down the stairs.
This time, not just Fang Jing, but many of the students started counting the floors.
One floor, two floors, three floors…
The more they counted, the more panicked they became. When they reached the fifth floor and saw that the stairs still hadn’t ended, everyone stopped in their tracks, their hands and feet turning cold. Fear was written on every face. By now, some of the female classmates had already broken down, collapsing to the ground and crying.
“We’ve… we’ve gone down five floors.”
“I counted five floors too. It’s over. We’re never getting out of here.”
“It’s a ghost wall… it has to be a ghost wall…”
For a moment, everyone was at a loss.
Fang Jing’s face also turned extremely grim. He didn’t dare to go any further. He felt deeply unwilling-was he really going to die here in such a confused and meaningless way?
“Yang Jian, you’re not dead yet, are you?”
Suddenly, he shouted with a fierce tone.
“Fang Jing, I haven’t done anything to offend you, have I? Don’t curse me like that,” Yang Jian said coldly.
Fang Jing turned around, pushed through the crowd, grabbed Yang Jian by the collar, and said viciously, “If you’re not dead, then lead the way. If it’s you, you’ll definitely find a way out of here alive. With your potential, there’s no way you’ll die in this cursed place.”
Yang Jian replied, “You know more than I do. If you can’t find a way out, what can I do?”
“You must know something. Are you going to tell me or not?” Fang Jing’s face twisted with frustration.
He was at his wit’s end and could only pin his hopes on Yang Jian. If Yang Jian really had the potential to grow into the person he would become in the future, there was no way he’d die here.
From the very beginning, Fang Jing had been keeping an eye on Yang Jian.
In just a short time, Yang Jian had analyzed the pattern of the Knocking Ghost and kept track of the number of stairs while escaping.
There was no doubt about it-Yang Jian was someone with an incredibly terrifying ability to adapt.
Ordinary people would be completely panicked upon encountering a ghost domain and a ghost, but Yang Jian remained calm.
This was a kind of talent.
In normal times, this talent might seem useless, something that would never come into play in a lifetime. But in a world that had suddenly changed, this talent could greatly increase one’s chances of survival. If Yang Jian were to become a Ghost Tamer, this talent would give him a significant advantage when dealing with ghosts.
“Fang Jing, asking me won’t help. This is the first time I’ve encountered something like this. If I had a way out, I wouldn’t be stuck here. Staying in this place even a second longer increases the chance of running into that thing. Do you think I want to die?” Yang Jian said.
Fang Jing’s heart sank. He suddenly realized that at this moment, Yang Jian was still a complete novice who knew nothing.
He felt somewhat ridiculous-why was he seeking help from Yang Jian now?
Had the influence of the future Yang Jian affected him too much?
“Fang… Fang Jing, something’s wrong. Look…” Suddenly, a classmate pointed tremblingly at the restroom door.
Between the third and second floors of the teaching building, there was a restroom.
“Damn it, we’ve gone in a circle and we’re still at the second and a half floor. We’re really done for now.”
“No, it’s not that. Look behind the door-there seems to be a figure,” the classmate stammered, raising his phone to shine the light toward it.
Everyone immediately backed away in fear.
In the light, a tall, humanoid silhouette appeared behind the glass window of the restroom door.
“Who… who’s in there?” someone shouted, trying to muster some courage.
They hoped it was just another classmate inside the restroom.
“Creak~”
A long, drawn-out sound of the door opening echoed. Then, a pale, ghostly arm emerged from the pitch-black restroom, resting on the door as it slowly pushed it open.
“It’s not human. It’s another ghost.”
Fang Jing’s pupils instantly contracted, but then a fierce expression crossed his face.
“If you don’t know anything, then go die.”
With all his strength, he grabbed Yang Jian and shoved him violently toward the endless darkness of the restroom, intending to use Yang Jian’s life to temporarily stall this newly emerged ghost.
