My Sister Is Acting Strange - Chapter 68 - Supervisor Zhu
During the last evening self-study session, Shen Yiqiu called Tang Huaijin out and handed him a certificate from the calligraphy association, with all the details already filled in. At the same time, the delightful sound of the system’s reward notification echoed in Tang Huaijin’s mind.
After thanking Shen Yiqiu, Tang Huaijin returned to the classroom, quietly savoring the master level of calligraphy. It felt as if he had personally experienced the calligraphy journeys of various renowned masters, with every stroke and line etched into his mind.
This made Tang Huaijin eager to go home and try it out, hoping his sister would help him prepare the ink. Since their parents left, it seemed the siblings hadn’t visited the study room in a long time.
Thinking of this, Tang Huaijin took out his phone and sent a message to his sister. She seemed busy and didn’t reply.
After waiting a while, his sister suddenly called. Fortunately, Tang Huaijin’s phone was always on silent at school. Although students were allowed to have phones, playing with them during class was still prohibited.
After reporting to Shen Yiqiu, Tang Huaijin jogged out of the classroom to answer the call.
Walking to a secluded area, he cheerfully asked, “Sis, what’s up?”
On the other end, his sister’s voice sounded a bit off, murmuring, “Jin, can you come pick me up? I miss you…”
Tang Huaijin’s brow furrowed as he tried to soften his voice, asking, “Sis, what’s wrong? Tell me.”
Tang Yaoyao seemed to break down, choking up, “Your book… I messed it up…”
His sister was the most precious person to Tang Huaijin, and knowing her well, he understood that if she wasn’t truly upset, she wouldn’t cry to him like this.
Tang Huaijin’s eyes turned cold instantly. He first gently comforted his sister, telling her to wait for him. Once she calmed down a bit, he hung up the phone and turned back to the classroom.
Returning to his seat, Tang Huaijin silently began packing his bag.
Bai Yuerou noticed Tang Huaijin’s extremely grim expression and asked worriedly, “What’s wrong?”
Tang Huaijin shook his head, unwilling to say much. He didn’t fully understand the situation yet, but just hearing his sister’s deeply aggrieved voice made him furious, with a hint of hostility between his brows.
Xia Xinya was about to tease Tang Huaijin but was startled by the murderous look in his eyes, immediately sitting quietly, not daring to speak. Tang Huaijin’s brows were tightly knitted together, a look Xinya had seen before-once when they first met, and the second time in the cafeteria.
Quickly packing his things, Tang Huaijin walked to the front of the classroom and said to Shen Yiqiu, “Teacher, I need to leave early.”
“Hmm?” Shen Yiqiu looked up at him, noticing his gloomy expression, and paused for a moment before softly saying, “Be careful, don’t act impulsively. You can call me if you need anything.”
Tang Huaijin acknowledged and left the school, his pace brisk as he hailed a taxi. The experienced driver uncle stepped on the gas, swiftly taking him to his destination.
As Tang Huaijin made his way to his sister’s office area, he saw her sitting in a chair, looking rather dispirited.
Approaching her, he gave her a once-over, relieved to find that aside from her slightly swollen eyes from crying, she seemed fine. He gently asked, “Sis, what’s wrong?”
“Jin…” Seeing her closest family member, Tang Yaoyao’s expression immediately turned aggrieved, her lips quivering as if she were about to cry. “That Zhu Meiyu said the book review I wrote for you was terrible and that it was my fault your book didn’t get approved…”
Tang Huaijin took his sister’s hand, gently comforting her. “That can’t be right. I’ve read your reviews; they’re perfectly fine.”
Before Tang Yaoyao could respond, Han Yaoyao, who was nearby, chimed in indignantly, “Exactly! The review was so good I couldn’t believe Yaoyao wrote it at first. That fat woman is just picking on your sister.”
“Is that so?” Tang Huaijin was surprised. Given how good his book was, it was odd that the publishing house wasn’t eager to accept it.
Sensing her brother’s confusion, Tang Yaoyao sniffled and explained, “She said she wanted to handle the book herself and asked me for your contact information…”
Tang Huaijin nodded in understanding. For that fat woman to say such things to his sister’s face without getting scolded was surprising. It was clear the two had a falling out.
Regardless, demanding an editor’s work like that was disgraceful. Tang Huaijin asked softly, “Did you tell her off?”
“No, I just talked back a little, and she threw my review in the trash.” Tang Yaoyao wiped her tears, feeling both humiliated by Zhu Meiyu and guilty for affecting her brother’s chances. “Am I useless?”
Hearing this, Tang Huaijin felt a surge of anger. His sister had put so much effort into that review, only for it to be discarded like trash and for her to be humiliated. It was infuriating.
His eyes turned icy as he stood up, holding his sister’s hand. “Where is that fat woman? Let’s go find her.”
Tang Yaoyao, not one to back down, felt emboldened with her brother by her side. She linked her arm with his and headed towards the office. “She’s in the office.”
At the office door, Tang Huaijin took a deep breath to calm his anger and knocked.
“Come in.”
Hearing Zhu Meiyu’s greasy, raspy voice, Tang Huaijin pushed the door open and got straight to the point. “I want to know what was wrong with my sister’s book review.”
Zhu Meiyu stood up, her body jiggling, but instead of responding to Tang Huaijin, she looked at Tang Yaoyao, who was holding his arm, and sneered, “What? Feeling bold now, Tang Yaoyao? Bringing someone to cause trouble?”
With her brother beside her, Tang Yaoyao felt empowered. She glared at Zhu Meiyu and said coldly, “This is my brother, the author of the book.”
“Brother?” Zhu Meiyu laughed mockingly, her eyes drifting to their linked arms. “More like a lover, isn’t it?”
Hearing the insinuation, Tang Yaoyao instinctively withdrew her hand, as if trying to hide something, and retorted angrily, “Don’t talk nonsense. I don’t know what you’re implying.”
Tang Huaijin, noticing his sister pulling away, was momentarily taken aback. He turned to look at her, then shook his head with a hint of helplessness. Tang Yaoyao’s reaction was almost like admitting guilt.
Zhu Meiyu laughed with a mocking tone, kicking the trash can beside the desk, and said, “But your book review is indeed poorly written. It’s not that I don’t want to approve it, but if this is the level of review you can produce after reading the book, then there’s no point in approving it.”
“However, it’s not entirely impossible to pass. If you could be sensible and let me handle your brother’s book, I would certainly do my utmost to support him.” She glanced at Tang Huaijin, who stood nearby with a stern expression, and added with a smile, “Moreover, who knows, we might even become family.”
Tang Yaoyao couldn’t stand it any longer. She was furious and, disregarding the fact that Zhu Meiyu was her supervisor, glared at her and shouted, “Stop dreaming, you fat woman! With your looks, you think you can attract my brother?”
Zhu Meiyu was aware that many people privately called her a fat woman, but no one had ever dared to insult her to her face. Her smile vanished instantly, replaced by a chilling demeanor as she said, “Why pretend? I saw you two kissing downstairs last Friday, didn’t I? You’re quite the sister.”
“And although I’m not doing great, authors on my blacklist might find it hard to get a break.”
She added with a smug expression, “And I can’t guarantee there won’t be rumors about you two in the company.”
Zhu Meiyu’s eyes were filled with undisguised disdain and disgust. Hearing her veiled threat, Tang Yaoyao’s face turned pale, standing aside with lips trembling slightly.
Seeing his sister like this, Tang Huaijin, already furious, couldn’t hold back. He stepped forward, blocking Zhu Meiyu’s view, and said coldly, “What my sister and I do is none of your business, right? As a supervisor, do you need to meddle in others’ privacy?”
“Even if we weren’t siblings, and I was with my sister, it’s nobody’s business. As a leader, would you reject a work over such matters?”
He took his sister’s book review from the trash can, slapped it on Zhu Meiyu’s desk, and said icily, “Now, tell me, what’s wrong with this review?”
Zhu Meiyu was momentarily stunned by his barrage of questions. Once she recovered, her face turned red and green. She hadn’t expected the siblings, who looked so alike, weren’t related. Having reached her position, she wasn’t foolish; she knew the quality of Tang Yaoyao’s review. Faced with Tang Huaijin’s questioning, she was at a loss for words.
After a while, Zhu Meiyu seemed to be enraged, and said defiantly, “I just don’t want to approve it. What can you do about it?”
Tang Huaijin scoffed, “So you’re willing to harm the company’s interests for personal gain, snatching your subordinate’s work, and I can’t do anything about it? Aren’t you just a mere supervisor? Is there no justice in this publishing house?”
Zhu Meiyu laughed disdainfully, “Justice? Let me tell you, in the Editorial Department, I am the justice.”
Tang Huaijin’s brows furrowed tightly. He stared at Zhu Meiyu for a moment, then laughed in anger, resisting the urge to throw her off the building. He turned, took his sister to the door, looked back at Zhu Meiyu, and said coldly, “I tell you, fat woman, you will pay for your words today.”
With that, he kicked open the office door and left the company with his sister.
