My Sister Is Acting Strange - Chapter 51 - Watching a Movie
The trio arrived at the cinema, only to find themselves in a debate over which movie to watch.
Xia Xinya was eager to watch a horror film; she thrived on the thrill of such experiences.
Tang Huaijin, on the other hand, preferred a comedy. After all, watching horror films was something he did with his sister, but with two girls and one guy, it seemed a bit odd.
Seeing his reluctance, Xia Xinya assumed he was scared and became even more insistent, as if she wouldn’t rest until they watched the horror movie.
Ultimately, they couldn’t reach an agreement and turned to Bai Yuerou, who held the deciding vote according to their rules.
Bai Yuerou bit her lip, glanced at the schedule, and said, “Are you guys even paying attention to the showtimes? The movie Huaijin wants to see won’t end until after eight, and the horror film has just started.”
Xia Xinya immediately brightened up, exclaiming, “I’ll be starving by eight! Let’s watch this one. Come on, I’ll get the tickets.”
Tang Huaijin retorted, “You won’t starve by ten, you silly girl.” But he didn’t refuse, as the timing was indeed inconvenient.
They quickly bought tickets, along with some popcorn and soda, and hurried into the screening room.
Luck was on their side, as their seats offered a good view.
The screening room was dark, and the movie had already begun, with the audience settling into silence.
Since Xia Xinya was the most eager, she led the way, followed by Tang Huaijin and Bai Yuerou.
The aisle between the seats was narrow, and given Tang Huaijin’s height, standing would obstruct others’ view, so he didn’t adjust his position.
Thus, the three ended up seated in a girl-boy-girl arrangement.
The movie was quite gripping, though Tang Huaijin remained unfazed, having built up a tolerance from watching horror films with his sister as a child.
Bai Yuerou, however, was terrified, not daring to sip her soda, frequently covering her eyes with her hands. After one particularly frightening scene, she instinctively grabbed Tang Huaijin’s arm.
Her grip was tight, clearly showing her fear, and her face was visibly pale.
Tang Huaijin glanced at Xia Xinya, who was still engrossed in the screen, hesitated for a moment, then gently patted Bai Yuerou’s hand. Her hand was soft and slightly cool.
Bai Yuerou relaxed her grip on his arm slightly, but the next moment, as a creepy face appeared on the screen, she shrieked and grabbed Tang Huaijin’s hand, which hadn’t yet retreated.
Tang Huaijin’s expression froze, and he turned to look at Xia Xinya.
Her face was also a bit pale, yet she was watching the screen with a mix of fear and excitement, munching on popcorn, oblivious to the situation beside her.
Relieved, Tang Huaijin knew that if Xia Xinya caused a scene in the theater, it would be a real hassle.
He frowned slightly at Bai Yuerou’s hand holding his, gently tugged, and she, realizing her awkwardness, let go.
“Sorry…” Bai Yuerou, sensing Tang Huaijin’s demeanor, shifted slightly away and refrained from touching him again, though her face remained ghostly pale, her hands clutching her clothes nervously.
This girl must be really scared, Tang Huaijin thought as he looked at Bai Yuerou’s pale face, devoid of any color. He sighed inwardly, wondering if he would be as indifferent if Xia Xinya were the one frightened like this.
With that thought, Tang Huaijin gently extended his hand again. Well, it’s just holding hands, he reasoned.
Bai Yuerou glanced at him in surprise, her eyes showing a hint of gratitude. She bit her lip and slowly tightened her grip around Tang Huaijin’s warm hand, which enveloped hers completely, providing a comforting sense of security.
Holding his hand, Bai Yuerou remained still, her previously pale cheeks gradually gaining a rosy hue, and she watched the movie with her lips slightly pursed.
Meanwhile, Xia Xinya seemed even more excited, almost unable to contain herself as she watched the male lead fiercely battle the vengeful spirit. Tang Huaijin couldn’t help but twitch his eyelid at her enthusiasm; if she liked action so much, she should be watching an action movie.
Like many horror films, this one featured a beautiful female lead who, after the male protagonist’s temporary victory, practically ended up in bed with him, barely clothed. The juxtaposition of fear followed by a steamy scene was practically a dating tool for guys with such intentions. Tang Huaijin felt nothing; he even thought the actress seemed a bit old and sagging.
Bai Yuerou was too shy to watch the screen or look at Tang Huaijin’s face, so she kept her head down, her hand still clutching Tang Huaijin’s despite having warmed up.
Xia Xinya also felt a bit embarrassed, not wanting to watch the couple rolling around on screen. She turned to look at Tang Huaijin. Seeing him engrossed in the movie, she pouted, having initially thought he might be scared. Instead, he seemed hooked on this part, prompting her to lean over and pinch Tang Huaijin’s arm, teasingly saying, “Typical pervert, only interested in this stuff.”
Tang Huaijin was startled by Xia Xinya’s sudden turn. He was still holding Bai Yuerou’s hand and instinctively tried to pull away, but for some reason, Bai Yuerou held on tightly, refusing to let go.
Feeling inexplicably guilty, Tang Huaijin tried to hide his hand behind him, awkwardly saying, “Weren’t you the one who wanted to watch this? Just enjoy your movie.”
“You’re the one watching this!” Xia Xinya naturally assumed he was mocking her. She hadn’t known there would be inappropriate scenes when she chose this movie. Annoyed, she glared at him before turning back to the screen.
Seeing that she wasn’t paying attention to them anymore, Tang Huaijin breathed a slight sigh of relief and turned to Bai Yuerou, whispering, “Yuerou?”
Bai Yuerou seemed oblivious to the exchange between the two, her face flushed as she quietly responded, “Hmm?”
“Uh… your hand.” Tang Huaijin was about to address the issue but noticed the screen’s atmosphere shift, the music turning suspenseful. He awkwardly said, “Never mind… it’s nothing.”
“Okay…” Bai Yuerou bit her lip, slightly raising her head to glance at Tang Huaijin, softly acknowledging him.
The rest of the evening unfolded without much excitement. Xia Xinya, slightly disappointed by Tang Huaijin’s apparent lack of fear, refrained from picking a fight and focused on watching the movie. In the peculiar yet somewhat ambiguous atmosphere, the group finished watching the film, which boasted top-notch special effects but a rather clichéd plot.
As the credits rolled, Bai Yuerou released Tang Huaijin’s hand, and the group walked out of the cinema side by side.
Xia Xinya seemed somewhat unsatisfied, pulling Bai Yuerou along to discuss the plot. Noticing Yuerou’s apparent confusion, Xinya suddenly remembered, “I forgot, Rou was too scared to watch the horror movie last time.”
Feeling a pang of guilt, Xia Xinya hugged Bai Yuerou, saying, “I didn’t even notice, Rou must have been really scared.”
Bai Yuerou’s face was flushed, but she merely smiled softly in response, “It wasn’t too bad.”
Xia Xinya glanced at Tang Huaijin’s innocent expression and complained, “It’s all Huaijin’s fault for sitting between us, blocking me from comforting you.”
Then, she suspiciously eyed Tang Huaijin and demanded, “Hey, you creep, you didn’t take advantage of Rou, did you? I know how guys like you love to sneakily hold girls’ hands in situations like this.”
Xia Xinya was quite astute, having read plenty of comics. Given Tang Huaijin’s character and Rou’s beauty, she wouldn’t be surprised if he tried to make a move.
Sneakily holding hands…?
Tang Huaijin’s expression turned peculiar as he glanced at Bai Yuerou, choosing to remain silent.
Bai Yuerou felt both guilty and shy, quickly swatting Xia Xinya and retorting, “What nonsense are you spouting, Xinya? Jin wouldn’t take advantage of me.”
After speaking, Bai Yuerou noticed Tang Huaijin’s odd gaze and felt embarrassed, her cheeks turning red as she protested, “If you keep this up, I’m going home!”
“Okay, okay, I’m sorry, don’t be mad, Rou. Let’s go get some delicious food.” Seeing Bai Yuerou genuinely upset, Xia Xinya immediately switched to a placating smile.
As they exited the shopping mall, Bai Yuerou continued to chide, “Jin is our friend. How can you think that way about your friend? You should apologize to Jin.”
“Oh…” Xia Xinya, though reluctant, dutifully turned to Tang Huaijin and said, “I’m sorry,” her tone lacking any real remorse.
Tang Huaijin accepted Xia Xinya’s apology with a cheerful smile, saying, “Well, admitting your mistakes is a good start. There’s hope for you yet.”
Bai Yuerou sneaked a glance at Tang Huaijin’s expression and, seeing his satisfaction, finally smiled contentedly.
