My Sister Is Acting Strange - Chapter 16 - A Trip to the Supermarket
Tang Huaijin was standing idly with his hands in his pockets outside the office building when suddenly someone grabbed his arm, pulling him into a soft embrace.
Turning his head, he met his sister Tang Yaoyao’s exquisite, enchanting peach blossom eyes. Her long and curled eyelashes fluttered slightly, exuding a charm that seemed to draw people in.
With joy in her eyes, Yaoyao affectionately held Huaijin’s arm and cooed, “Jin, let’s go home, shall we?”
Her smile seemed magical, making him feel genuinely happy from within as he squinted and smiled back, “How about we stop by the supermarket first? I checked the fridge when I got here, and it looks like we’re out of vegetables. Oh, and it seems we’re out of soy sauce too.”
“Sure, let’s go.” Yaoyao led Huaijin towards the parking area, patted the seat of the electric scooter, and commanded, “Jin, ride and take your sister along.”
With a smile, Huaijin hopped on the scooter, waiting for his sister to settle in before humming lightly, “Off we go.”
The weather was pleasant today, and Huaijin wore a denim jacket unbuttoned, which felt slightly cold as he rode the scooter, the chilly wind blowing against his face, making it hard for him to keep his eyes open.
With Huaijin blocking the wind, Yaoyao sitting behind him probably didn’t feel much, yet she still wrapped her arms around his waist. Her delicate hands gently gathered his jacket, resting her chin softly on his back, comfortably rubbing her eyes shut and humming a tune.
The road was clear, and Huaijin rode with one hand, placing his other over his sister’s soft hands.
Yaoyao’s lips curved into a beautiful arch, her fair fingers weaving through Huaijin’s as they intertwined their fingers.
“Does it get very cold riding the scooter every morning like this?” Huaijin gently caressed his sister’s smooth hands, a touch of concern in his voice.
Thinking about the approaching winter and his sister having to ride to work chilled him to the bone.
“It’s not too cold, I wear gloves,” Yaoyao rubbed her cheek against his back, giggling.
If only she didn’t have to support him financially, she might have had a better life…
A complexity surged through Huaijin, but he kept silent, knowing well that they were inseparable. His sister’s life wouldn’t be complete without him, nor could he bear losing her.
Huaijin couldn’t even imagine a future where another man might take his sister’s hand from him, and all he could do was wish them happiness. The mere thought made his heart feel as if it were being torn apart; he wouldn’t allow, nor could he let such a thing happen.
From the day their parents left them, even if the world ended, nothing could tear them apart.
Squeezing his sister’s hand, he whispered, “Sis, I’ll make sure you’re happy.”
“Mmm… I’ve always believed in you, Jin.”
Yaoyao inhaled deeply, savoring the familiar scent of her brother, free from any trace of other women.
Upon reaching the nearby supermarket, they parked the scooter and entered, arm in arm.
Pushing the shopping cart, the siblings began their stroll through the supermarket. Huaijin glanced at his sister and asked, “What would you like for dinner tonight?”
“Mmm… pan-fried green chili peppers!” Yaoyao’s eyes sparkled, the aroma of savory meat paired with refreshing green peppers was one of Huaijin’s specialties.
“Alright, let’s get some meat first.”
Pushing the cart towards the fresh produce section, Huaijin picked up a piece of pork belly. He preferred not buying pre-minced meat, feeling it wasn’t sanitary. He always opted to mince his own meat at home.
After getting some vegetables and preparing to pick up some fruits, Huaijin’s cart accidentally collided with another.
Such incidents were common, and Huaijin was quick to apologize, “Sorry, I didn’t see you coming.”
But upon seeing the person he bumped into, Huaijin paused, and the grip on his sister’s arm tightened.
“Oh… no problem.” Lin Ruoxi was equally surprised, her eyes flickering with a hint of joy as she glanced at Yaoyao, who was clinging to his arm, and said timidly, “Hello, sis…”
Beside her stood a plump middle-aged woman, her mother Xie Wanrong, smiling warmly, “Ah, Jin, it’s been a while since you visited our home to see Ruoxi.” She then turned to Yaoyao, her eyes asking, “And who is this?”
“Hello, Auntie Xie, this is my sister, Tang Yaoyao.” Huaijin quickly regained his composure and greeted her.
“Hello, Auntie, thank you for taking care of Jin.” Yaoyao also smiled gently, aware of the close ties Huaijin once had with the Lin family.
“Are you here to shop for groceries? It’s so nice to see siblings so close.” Xie Wanrong admired the way they held hands, noting how rare it was to see siblings shop together at their age.
Yaoyao’s face remained unchanged, still smiling warmly, “Yes, Jin and I have always been close since we were young.”
Listening to the exchange, Ruoxi felt somewhat out of place, often glancing at Huaijin.
The situation felt slightly awkward for Huaijin, who subtly squeezed his sister’s hand.
Understanding the cue, Yaoyao quickly added, “Auntie, we should get going now. We’ll visit you when we have more time.”
Xie Wanrong nodded with a smile, watching them leave before sighing, “Having both a son and a daughter, what a blessing. It’s just too bad.”
She then looked at Ruoxi, who was silent, and continued, “Invite Jin over more often, I remember you two used to be close. I really like that boy; he’s polite and will surely be successful in the future.”
Ruoxi nodded noncommittally, not knowing what else to say.
…
After encountering Ruoxi and her mother, Huaijin became somewhat silent. After parking the scooter in their residential area, he carried the groceries towards their home.
Yaoyao was quiet too, fiddling with her phone until she suddenly stepped up beside Huaijin, handing him her phone like presenting a treasure, “What do you think about this girl? Should I introduce her to you? Please don’t be sad, okay?”
Huaijin didn’t even glance at the phone, holding the grocery bags in one hand and capturing Yaoyao’s hand with the other, feigning confusion, “Is there anyone more beautiful than my sister?”
Yaoyao gave a knowing smile, gripping his hand back, “That’s true.”
“Don’t worry, I’m not sad, just a bit embarrassed.”
Yaoyao studied Huaijin for a moment, seeing that he didn’t seem to be lying, then finally smiled contentedly.
Once home, Huaijin busied himself in the kitchen.
Soon, he served several dishes that were a feast for the senses. After tasting a few bites, Yaoyao blissfully squinted her eyes, then suddenly remembered something and dashed to the kitchen to fetch a bottle of red wine.
“Why the sudden decision to drink?” Huaijin asked curiously.
“This is to celebrate your smooth start at the new school.” Yaoyao poured them both some wine and raised her glass, “Cheers!”
Huaijin watched his sister with a barely suppressed chuckle, “Cheers.”
Yaoyao wasn’t much of a drinker; after two glasses, her face turned a rosy red, and her speech started to slur.
“I… why should Jin settle for… hanging from that tree?”
“Jin… don’t worry, your sister… will definitely find someone perfect for you, just now, didn’t I show you, absolutely top-notch.”
Unable to hold back any longer, Huaijin laughed out loud, stood up to pour her some water, and helped her to the sofa, softly saying, “Alright, sit here for a while. I’ll wash the dishes, and don’t fall asleep.”
“Mmm, I won’t fall asleep. I’ll wait for you to sleep together,” Yaoyao mumbled, her words becoming nonsensical as she drifted off.
Huaijin chuckled and pinched her nose, which she playfully swatted at with her hand.
After he finished the dishes, Huaijin found his sister asleep on the sofa, hugging a pillow.
He sat beside her and gently nudged her, whispering, “Sis?”
Seeing no response, he playfully pinched her face, causing her to murmur faintly.
Huaijin giggled quietly, removed the pillow, and carefully lifted her into his arms.
His sister was not light, being quite tall and well-proportioned, but Huaijin carried her with ease.
Drunk, she was docile, quietly burying her head in his chest, her warm breath seeping through her pajamas, tickling him slightly.
Carrying her to the bedroom, Huaijin tiptoed as he placed her on the bed. Fortunately, she had already changed into her pajamas, which spared him some trouble.
After removing her slippers, her petite, delicately sculpted toes wiggled out of the warm covers, appearing rather adorable.
After settling her in, Huaijin sat by her bed, captivated by her softly blushed face. A tingling sensation urged him to lean down and gently kiss her forehead, quickly pulling back to see if she reacted, feeling relieved when she didn’t.
He thought about leaving but couldn’t bear to and, on a whim, thought, since she’s asleep, a few more kisses couldn’t hurt; they used to kiss all the time as kids, didn’t they?
He leaned in again, pecking her smooth cheek. Her slightly heavy breathing warmed his face, causing the fine hairs on his face to stand and his heart to race, greedily kissing her cheeks.
Being very careful not to wake her, her sweet scent was intoxicating, and his gaze heated as he moved closer to her slightly parted, rosy lips.
Just as Huaijin was about to kiss her lips, Yaoyao’s breathing suddenly stopped.
With greed, he kissed the corner of her lips, the soft touch swaying his heart, regaining some clarity as he bit his tongue, pushed himself up with his arms, and sat up.
Seeing that she remained undisturbed, he sighed in relief, his palms sweaty as he breathed deeply.
After covering her properly with the blanket and taking a few deep breaths, Huaijin tiptoed out of her room.
After he left, Yaoyao exhaled deeply and slowly opened her peach blossom eyes, which shimmered in the darkness.
