My Sister Is Acting Strange - Chapter 11 - A Long-Awaited Smile
The morning passed quickly. As soon as class ended, Xia Xinya pulled Bai Yuerou along to have lunch. Bai Yuerou asked Tang Huaijin if he wanted to join them, and surprisingly, Xia Xinya didn’t object.
The three of them arrived at the cafeteria, found a spot, and placed some items to reserve their seats before heading to get their food.
When they returned, two other people were already seated at the same table, chatting and laughing as they ate.
Tang Huaijin froze for a moment when he recognized the faces of the two. It was Lin Ruoxi and Wang Xuefei. Wang Xuefei had been their classmate during their freshman year but had later chosen to study humanities. It was unexpected to see her at Rose Elite High School.
Xia Xinya, following closely behind Tang Huaijin, almost bumped into him when he suddenly stopped. She angrily exclaimed, “What’s wrong with you, Tang Huaijin?”
Lin Ruoxi turned her head and was momentarily stunned to see Tang Huaijin. She glanced at the two sweet-looking girls beside him, her expression complicated, and then lowered her head to continue eating.
Wang Xuefei, however, looked at Tang Huaijin with undisguised disdain.
Sensing the awkward atmosphere, Bai Yuerou softly asked Tang Huaijin, “Do you want to find another spot?”
Tang Huaijin was silent for a moment before shaking his head. “No need… let’s sit here.” He then led the two girls to their seats.
Xia Xinya, having realized the situation, brightened up and deliberately asked in a loud voice, “Who’s this beauty? Your girlfriend, Tang Huaijin?”
Tang Huaijin merely gave her a cold glance and said nothing.
Wang Xuefei couldn’t hold back. With her naturally loud voice, she shouted, “Ugh! As if! Just hearing the name Tang Huaijin makes me sick.”
Despite the harsh words, Tang Huaijin acted as if he hadn’t heard, focusing on his food.
Bai Yuerou, visibly annoyed, put down her chopsticks and questioned Wang Xuefei, “What did you just say?”
Xia Xinya, feeling a strange discomfort at hearing Tang Huaijin being insulted, retorted, “Sister, you’re overthinking. I was talking about the beauty next to you.” She emphasized the word “beauty.”
The sarcastic tone made Bai Yuerou chuckle.
Except for Tang Huaijin, who often made her feel defeated, she had never been afraid of anyone. She was quite adept at sarcasm.
How dare someone insult Tang Huaijin, someone she wouldn’t dare to scold lightly? Letting this woman insult him would mean losing face for Little Witch Xia.
That wouldn’t do.
Wang Xuefei’s face turned red with anger, but she could only hold back her words.
Lin Ruoxi, who had been silent, finally spoke up, “Don’t say anything, Fei-Jie.”
Wang Xuefei, seeing Lin Ruoxi’s pale face, clenched her teeth in frustration but said no more.
Xia Xinya, feeling triumphant, taunted, “What about Tang Huaijin? Do you think he’d be interested in you?”
Ignoring Bai Yuerou’s attempts to stop her, she continued, “And you, the silent one…”
A loud bang interrupted Xia Xinya.
Tang Huaijin slammed the table, his eyes cold as he commanded, “Enough! Eat!”
He didn’t need Xia Xinya to defend him, nor did he want to hear her say anything harsh to Lin Ruoxi.
“You!” Xia Xinya was startled at first, then felt aggrieved. “Why are you yelling at me? I was standing up for you!”
“Not necessary,” Tang Huaijin replied calmly, continuing to eat.
“Alright, alright, let’s just eat and stop arguing,” Bai Yuerou gently advised, trying to calm Xia Xinya.
Feeling wronged, Xia Xinya took a few bites before putting down her chopsticks and pulling out her phone.
Just when Tang Huaijin thought the meal would end peacefully, a boy with headphones around his neck swaggered over with his tray and sat down opposite Lin Ruoxi without asking.
“Hey, beautiful, can I get your WeChat?” The boy, with his neatly styled hair and a roguish grin, played with his phone.
Lin Ruoxi didn’t even glance at him, continuing to eat without a word.
Tang Huaijin quickened his pace, trying to finish his meal.
“Wow, playing it cool, huh? I just want to get to know you,” the boy persisted, clearly not taking the hint.
Before Lin Ruoxi could respond, Wang Xuefei interjected, “Can’t you see she doesn’t want to give it to you?”
“Mind your own business,” the boy snapped, his face turning sour.
Wang Xuefei, her face flushed with anger, fell silent.
Xia Xinya, watching the scene, almost burst out laughing.
Lin Ruoxi finally looked up, her gaze drifting towards Tang Huaijin.
“Hey, beautiful, I’m Li Tong, a sophomore in the science class,” the boy introduced himself, puzzled by Lin Ruoxi’s diverted attention. “Hey, I’m over here. Who are you looking at?”
Tang Huaijin finished his meal, stood up, and said to Lin Ruoxi, “Come sit here. I’m done.”
Lin Ruoxi, who had been expressionless, smiled, her eyebrows arching gracefully, her eyes sparkling with joy.
She looked like a blooming flower, beautiful and radiant.
Li Tong was mesmerized.
Lin Ruoxi picked up her tray and moved to Tang Huaijin’s seat, not eating but simply smiling at him.
Li Tong, feeling humiliated, stood up angrily. “Hey, I saw her first. How can you just cut in?”
Xia Xinya, about to intervene, hesitated when she saw Lin Ruoxi’s smiling face. Remembering how Tang Huaijin had scolded her earlier, she felt aggrieved and stayed silent.
Tang Huaijin, with a gentle smile, approached Li Tong. “Li Tong, right? Are you here to eat?”
“What’s it to you?” Li Tong retorted, his tone dismissive.
“I suggest you leave before you get into trouble,” Tang Huaijin said, his voice calm.
“Apologize now, or else…” Li Tong threatened, but before he could finish, Tang Huaijin grabbed his head and shoved it into his food.
“Don’t worry, I’ll help you finish,” Tang Huaijin mocked.
Li Tong struggled but couldn’t break free, his face rubbing against the greasy food, his eyes stinging from the sauce.
Seeing the commotion, Bai Yuerou hurried over, signaling Tang Huaijin to stop. “Let go, the teachers might come.”
Tang Huaijin released him, and Li Tong, wiping his eyes, glared at him.
“Apologize now!” Li Tong demanded, but Tang Huaijin laughed, approaching him with clenched fists.
“Stay away!” Li Tong backed up, eventually fleeing the scene.
Tang Huaijin watched him go, shaking his head.
Bai Yuerou sighed in relief, gently scolding Tang Huaijin, “You were too impulsive.”
Wang Xuefei, her face less angry, muttered, “At least you acted like a man.”
Lin Ruoxi, smiling throughout, said, “I knew you wouldn’t ignore me.”
Tang Huaijin, silent, left the cafeteria.
Lin Ruoxi watched him go, tears welling up in her eyes.
Bai Yuerou handed her a tissue. “Thank you,” Lin Ruoxi whispered.
“No need,” Bai Yuerou replied softly.
Xia Xinya, feeling conflicted, left alone.
Behind the gymnasium, Li Tong was washing his eyes, his friends helping him.
Seeing Xia Xinya, he complained, “Why didn’t you warn me about him?”
Xia Xinya kicked him, scolding, “Idiot! I told you to mess with the ugly one, not act like a thug!”
Li Tong, scared, promised to get revenge.
“Don’t act rashly,” Xia Xinya warned.
Li Tong reluctantly agreed.
