- Chapter 11 - I Don't Want What Others Don't Want
Wen Yueyin scoffed lightly from the side, “It’s just a roasted chicken leg, is it worth being so happy about? Xingluo, that girl, is really shallow, hasn’t seen anything good. Just eating someone else’s roasted chicken leg, and she’s already rushing to call him ‘Fourth Gege.'”
She then looked at Wen Rufeng with a smile, intimately holding his arm, “My brothers used to take me out to eat roasted chicken legs and other delicious things. I wouldn’t be envious of things given by others!”
Wen Rufeng’s body stiffened slightly.
Indeed, the three brothers often took Yueyin out to eat.
As for Wen Xingluo…
They had never taken her out to eat since childhood.
But that was her own fault; she was always fighting with Yueyin for things.
That was the punishment they gave her.
Seeing him silent, Wen Yueyin softly asked, “What is Big Brother thinking?”
“I’m thinking that Xingluo is somewhat different from before; she doesn’t cling to us anymore.”
Previously, Wen Xingluo always chased after them, eager to be their personal maid.
But ever since he entered White Crane Academy, except for occasionally bumping into her when picking up Yueyin, he never saw her appear in front of him.
Wen Yueyin thought for a moment and said, “Maybe she’s trying to attract Big Brother’s attention in this way, hoping to make you jealous. She surely still cares about you; otherwise, why would she prepare a birthday gift for you so many days in advance?”
Thinking of the Longevity Benediction on Wen Xingluo’s desk, Wen Rufeng couldn’t help but feel reassured.
He said seriously, “You’re right. But this girl is too willful, learning such lowly and dirty tricks! On my birthday, it’s better not to let her come, lest she causes trouble again!”
…
Wen Xingluo, unaware of Wen Rufeng’s thoughts, quietly finished embroidering the words on the silk fabric.
She sent the silk fabric to the shop, asking the craftsmen to make a carved Inkstone Screen from rosewood.
The day before the birthday banquet, Wen Xingluo picked up the finished Inkstone Screen from the shop and was passing through the bustling market when someone called her from the restaurant above.
She looked up.
Xie Shian leaned against the carved window, smiling as he raised his wine cup to her, “What are you standing there for? Come up!”
Around him were several idle Young Masters, all of whom had escaped from Golden Flavor House that day. Over the past few days, to express their gratitude to Wen Xingluo, they had sent her many gifts.
Wen Xingluo thought for a moment and stepped into the restaurant, intending to offer them a toast.
Inside the restaurant, Wen Rufeng was hosting a birthday banquet in the private room opposite Xie Shian.
The guests were all close friends of the Wen siblings, and the table was lively.
Yet, Wen Rufeng seemed somewhat distracted.
He occasionally glanced toward the door, as if waiting for someone.
“Big Brother,” Wen Yueyin smiled as she presented a brocade box, “This is my birthday gift for you.”
Wen Rufeng opened it, revealing a brush inside the brocade box.
Wen Yueyin said sweetly, “I made this brush myself. Do you like it, Big Brother?”
Wen Rufeng smiled, “Such a thoughtful gift, of course I like it. I will definitely use this brush you gave me to write the best articles-”
He suddenly paused.
Actually, Wen Xingluo had also given him a brush before, one she made herself.
How did he respond to Wen Xingluo’s expectant gaze back then?
Oh, he said such things were cheap and criticized Wen Xingluo for having no heart.
Later, he didn’t know where that brush ended up…
He always thought he treated his two sisters equally, but did he really treat Xingluo and Yueyin so differently?
Lost in his memories, someone suddenly pushed open the door to the private room.
Wen Xingluo appeared outside the door, holding the Inkstone Screen.
The room instantly fell silent.
Wen Rufeng looked at her, and for some reason, his previously restless heart suddenly calmed.
It felt like something lost had been regained.
Before he could speak, Wen Rulei spoke first, “Big Brother, didn’t you say you didn’t invite her? How did she come here on her own?”
Wen Ruyun, with his sharp tongue, smiled, “I thought she had climbed up the high branch of the Prince of Zhenbei’s Manor and could really leave us behind. Look, hasn’t she come running back to curry favor? I guess Fourth Young Master Xie must have discarded her, right? Too bad, too bad, what others don’t want, I don’t want either.”
“Enough.” Wen Rufeng waited for them to finish before saying coldly to Wen Xingluo, “Since you’re here, sit down and have a drink, so you won’t say we’re biased towards Yueyin.”
Wen Xingluo said, “If I said I entered the wrong room, would you believe me?”
Wen Yueyin furrowed her eyebrows, “Xingluo, when did you become so fond of lying? Big Brother has already given you a way out, yet you still want to act coy?”
Wen Ruyun swirled the wine in his cup, smirking wickedly, “You’ve brought the gift, yet you claim you’re not here for the birthday banquet. What, do you want us to beg you before you’ll behave? Wen Xingluo, you should look in the mirror and see if you’re worthy.”
Wen Xingluo couldn’t reason with them.
She turned to leave, but Wen Rulei rushed forward and pushed her inside.
Caught off guard, she fell to the ground, clutching the Inkstone Screen tightly, and looked up in defiance, “What are you doing?!”
“Oh, you treasure this thing so much?” Wen Rulei raised an eyebrow and snatched the Inkstone Screen, “I want to see what birthday gift you prepared for Big Brother!”
Wen Rulei unwrapped the brocade cloth, revealing a delicate Inkstone Screen.
The silk fabric was embroidered with a Longevity Benediction in golden thread, the rosewood screen frame carved with entwined gourd patterns, the entire Inkstone Screen exquisite and grand, clearly crafted with great care.
Wen Rufeng was somewhat surprised.
He stood up and took the Inkstone Screen, “Xingluo, is this your birthday gift for me?”
“I already said it’s not for you!” Wen Xingluo denied angrily, “Give it back!”
Wen Rulei grabbed her outstretched hand tightly.
He scolded, “Wen Xingluo, you brought a birthday gift to Big Brother’s birthday banquet, yet now you claim it’s not for him! Your antics should have a limit! We were too indulgent with you before!”
He dragged Wen Xingluo toward the door, “Since the gift is delivered, you can leave! I find you disgusting, don’t ruin Big Brother’s birthday banquet again!”
“Let go of me!” Wen Xingluo struggled hard, her wrist aching from the grip, “Give me back my things!”
Wen Rufeng sighed, “Xingluo, you’re really out of line. Besides me, who else could you be celebrating a birthday for? I’ll accept the gift, and I hope you change your ways and learn from Yueyin.”
“Birthday gift?”
A defiant voice suddenly came from outside.
Xie Shian appeared at the door with a group of idle Young Masters.
He stood lazily, impatiently tugging at the gold collar around his neck, sneering, “Wen, aren’t you afraid of bad luck holding the Longevity Benediction my brother wrote for our grandmother?!”
